Drought events have become more severe under climate change,and this can pose a major threat to the survival of various organisms.The molecular mechanisms involved in dehydration resistance are not well known.Here,adu...Drought events have become more severe under climate change,and this can pose a major threat to the survival of various organisms.The molecular mechanisms involved in dehydration resistance are not well known.Here,adults of the migratory locust,Locusta migratoria,were subjected to food-mediated dehydration,and adipokinetic hormone(AKH)signaling was found to play a key role in regulating dehydration resistance.Specifically,dehydration shortened the lifespan,increased the body weight loss,and reduced the water loss rate in adult locusts.Global transcriptome profiles revealed variations in tissue-specific gene expression between dehydration-resistant locusts and normal locusts.Importantly,dehydration selection and exposure induced prominent expression of AKH genes in the retrocerebral complex of adult locusts.Furthermore,individual knockdown of AKH1,AKH2,or AKH receptor(AKHR)accelerated water loss and shortened the lifespan of adult locusts under dehydration conditions,and trehalose supplementation ameliorated the negative effects caused by interference with AKH or AKHR.These findings demonstrated that AKH/AKHR signaling-dependent trehalose metabolism plays a crucial role in regulating locust dehydration resistance and thus provide novel insights into the regulatory mechanism underlying drought resistance.展开更多
Cobalt-doped titania(Co-TiO2)nanomaterials were synthesized by the sol–gel method at different calcination temperatures.Using Escherichia coli(a),Staphylococcus aureus(b)and Candida albicans(c)as target strains,the a...Cobalt-doped titania(Co-TiO2)nanomaterials were synthesized by the sol–gel method at different calcination temperatures.Using Escherichia coli(a),Staphylococcus aureus(b)and Candida albicans(c)as target strains,the antibacterial activity in visible light of the nanomaterials were studied.Co-TiO2 nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS),Fourier transform infrared spectrum(FT-IR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The Co ions in the Co-TiO2 nanomaterial exist in the form of CoTiO3 phase.The antibacterial properties of Co-TiO2 nanomaterials on E.coli(a),S.aureus(b)and C.albicans(c)were investigated with the oscillating flask method and the inhibition zone method.The nanomaterials calcined at 600°C exhibit excellent antibacterial activity.The bacteriostatic rates for E.coli,S.aureus and C.albicans reached 99.5%,91.3%and 93.4%respectively.The diameters of the antibacterial rings were up to 36 mm,37 mm,30 mm respectively,and the clarity of the ring was clear.The antibacterial properties of Co-TiO2 nanomaterials were compared with those of traditional silver sol,zinc oxide sol and Zn-doped TiO2 nanomaterials The mechanism of the influences of Co ions doping on the antibacterial activity of TiO2 nanomaterials was also discussed.The doping of Co ions inhibits the particle size of the antibacterial agent and extends the photocatalytic response range,thereby improving the photocatalytic performance of the antibacterial agent.展开更多

In this paper, we propose to un...The origin of the shallow decay segment in γ-ray bursts' (GRB) early light curves remains a mystery, especially those cases with a long-lived plateau followed by an abrupt falloff. In this paper, we propose to understand the origins of the long-lived plateau by considering the solidification of newborn quark stars with latent heat released as energy injection to the GRB afterglow, and we suggest that an abrupt falloff would naturally appear after the plateau due to the energy injection cutoff. We estimated the total latent heat released during the phase transition of quark stars from liquid to solid states to be on the order of ~ 1051 ergs, which is comparable to the emission energy in the shallow decay segment. We also estimated the time scale of radiating the latent heat through thermal photon emission, and found that the time scale agrees with the observations. Based on our estimation, we analyzed the process of energy injection to GRB afterglow. We will show that the steady latent heat of quark star phase transition will continuously inject into the GRB afterglow in a form similar to that of a Poynting-flux-dominated outflow and naturally produce the shallow decay phase and the abrupt falloff after the plateau. We conclude that the latent heat of quark star phase transition is an important contribution to the shallow decay radiation in some GRB afterglows, and explains the long-lived plateau followed by an abrupt falloff, if pulsar-like stars are really (solid) quark stars.展开更多
