BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, and novel methods for early/rapid diagnosis of HCC are needed.Terahertz(THz) spectroscopy is considered to have the potent...BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, and novel methods for early/rapid diagnosis of HCC are needed.Terahertz(THz) spectroscopy is considered to have the potential to distinguish between normal liver tissue and HCC tissue; however, there are few reports on it.We conduct this observational study to explore the feasibility of THz imaging for the diagnosis of HCC.AIM To evaluate the feasibility of THz for discriminating between HCC and normal liver tissues using fresh tissue specimens obtained from HCC patients who had undergone surgery.METHODS Normal liver tissue and HCC tissue were cryosectioned into 50 μm-thick slicesand placed on cover glass. Two adjacent tissue sections were separated subjected to histopathological examination by hematoxylin and eosin staining or THz transmission examination, and THz images were compared with pathologically mapped images. We determined the typical tumor and normal liver tissue regions by pathological examination; the corresponding areas of adjacent sections were examined by THz transmission.RESULTS The transmission rate of HCC tissue was 0.15-0.25, and the transmission rate of typical HCC tissue was about 0.2. THz transmittance in normal liver tissue is slightly higher than 0.4, but there were many influencing factors, including the degree of liver cirrhosis, fat components, ice crystals in frozen sections, and apoptosis.CONCLUSION In conclusion, this study shows that THz imaging can detect HCC tissue. Further research will yield more detailed data of the THz transmission rates of HCC tissue with different degrees of differentiation.展开更多

With the optimum wavelength of the exciting optical field, the transmission spectra of the DAST crystal excited by 532 nm laser under different power were measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy(THz-TDS) at room temperature. The transmitted THz intensity reduction of 26 % was obtained at 0.68 THz when the optical field was up to 80 m W. Meanwhile,the variation of refractive index showed an approximate quadratic behavior with the exciting optical field, which was related to the internal space charge field of photorefractive phenomenon in the DAST crystal caused by the photogenerated carrier.A significant enhancement of 13.7 % for THz absorption coefficient occurred at 0.68 THz due to the photogenerated carrier absorption effect in the DAST crystal.展开更多
We propose a design and numerical study of an optically blueshift and redshift switchable metamaterial(MM)absorber in the terahertz regime.The MM absorber comprises a periodic array of metallic split-ring resonators(S...We propose a design and numerical study of an optically blueshift and redshift switchable metamaterial(MM)absorber in the terahertz regime.The MM absorber comprises a periodic array of metallic split-ring resonators(SRRs)with semiconductor silicon embedded in the gaps of MM resonators.The absorptive frequencies of the MM can be shifted by applying an external pump power.The simulation results show that,for photoconductivity of silicon ranging between 1 S/m and 4000 S/m,the resonance peak of the absorption spectra shifts to higher frequencies,from 0.67 THz to 1.63 THz,with a resonance tuning range of 59%.As the conductivity of silicon increases,the resonance frequencies of the MM absorber are continuously tuned from 1.60 THz to 1.16 THz,a redshift tuning range of 28%.As the conductivity increases above 30000 S/m,the resonance frequencies tend to be stable while the absorption peak has a merely tiny variation.The optical-tuned absorber has potential applications as a terahertz modulator or switch.展开更多

Consensus clustering is becoming a state-of-the-art approach in an i...Consensus clustering is the problem of coordinating clustering information about the same data set coming from different runs of the same algorithm. Consensus clustering is becoming a state-of-the-art approach in an increasing number of applications. However, determining the optimal cluster number is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose a novel consensus clustering algorithm that is based on the Minkowski distance. Fusing with the Newman greedy algorithm in complex networks, the proposed clustering algorithm can automatically set the number of clusters. It is less sensitive to noise and can integrate solutions from multiple samples of data or attributes for processing data in the processing industry. A numerical simulation is also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, this consensus clustering algorithm is applied to a froth flotation process.展开更多
