The computation of the representative ground motions,to be used as input for the dynamic analyses of a struc- ture at a particular site, can be approached by several methods. The choice of the approach depends on two factors:the da- ta available and the type of problem to be solved. This paper reports the experience of the authors in approaching a specific case study:the Southern Memnon Colossus, located in Luxor,Egypt. The results are of interest when the hazard analysis estimation in developing countries and the safeguard of cultural heritage are concerned.Monuments have to be treated as important structures, due to their historical and economical value.Hence, standard procedures of probabilistic seismic haz- ard analysis for the seismic classification of common buildings have to be disregarded. On the other hand, the consequences of the collapse of a monument are not comparable to those related to structures such as nuclear power plants and large dams, for which the deterministic seismic hazard analysis provides a straightforward framework for evaluation of the worst case ground motions. An'intermediate'approach, which requites a lower amount of input data with respect to the deterministic one,is adopted. Its stochastic component can eapture significant eharacteristics of earthquakes, primarily the frequency contents which depend on the magnitude(often referred to as the earthquake scaling law). 展开更多

The Northern part of Algeria is considered to be the most active seismogenic area in the Western Mediterranean region. This area has a rich history of seismicity and had experienced many destructive earthquakes such as the Chlef (1954), El-Asnam (1980), Beni-Chograne (1994), AYn-Temouchent (1999) and recently Boumerdes (2003) earthquakes. The earthquake of AYn-Temouchent on December 22, 1999, was of magnitude 5,7, killed at least 28 people and made thousands of families homeless. Consequent damage was seen in all the structures located in a radius of 30 kin. In the city of E1-Maleh, located 12 km northeast of Ain-Temouchent, the "The National Bank Branch" of E1-Maleh suffered moderate damage, but enough to justify questions about its safety. The project of rehabilitating this building required a broad analysis of its static and dynamic, past and present behaviors. The study reported in this paper was a necessary preliminary step toward the development of an optimal retrofit solution. 展开更多

Following a seismic event that occurred years ago in Central Italy, the public opinion was growing and growing a concern on the adequacy of educational buildings all across Italy. This activated several political decisions and a consequent technical effort is in progress. Technically speaking one has to manage the classical problem of retrofitting existing buildings. However, the legal environment goes across national codes, targeted guidelines and the professional need of achieving pragmatic solutions based on ethical and social acceptation schemes. This paper introduces the topic in its worldwide exception and focuses then on some operative aspects in the Italian situation. It outlines the consolidated steps along this technical process and emphasizes the weak aspects one meets when going across the designers' reports. 展开更多
