AZ31 Mg alloy with heterogeneous bimodal grain structure(smaller grain size of 5-20µm and coarser grain size of 100-200µm)was subjected to accumulated extrusion bonding(AEB)at 250℃combined with two-stage artificial cooling in this work, viz.local water cooling and artificial cooling. The microstructure developed consecutively as a result of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization(DDRX)for the AEBed samples.{10-12}tensile twinning also played an important role for the AEB with local water cooling at the initial extrusion stage in the container.Local water cooling could further reduce the DRXed grain size to~2.1µm comparing that without water cooling. And the grain growth rate was reduced by artificial cooling out of extrusion die.Under the combination of two-stage cooling, the fine DRXed grains at sizing band were almost retained with average grain size of~2.3µm after the sheet out of extrusion die,and the unDRXed grains with high residual dislocation density accumulation were also reserved. The tensile tests results indicated that a good strength-ductility balance with a high ultimate tensile strength(319 MPa vs.412 MPa)and fracture elongation(19.9%vs.30.3%)were obtained. The strength enhancement was mainly owing to the grain refinement and local residual plastic strain reserved by the artificial cooling. The excellent ductility originated from fine DRXed microstructure and ED-tilt double peak texture. 展开更多

The negative thermal expansion(NTE) phenomenon is of great significance in fabricating zero thermal expansion(ZTE) materials to avoid thermal shock during heating and cooling. NTE is observed in limited groups of materials, e.g., metal cyanides, oxometallates, and metalorganic frameworks, but has not been reported in the family of metal hydrides. Herein, a colossal and continuous negative thermal expansion is firstly developed in the low-temperature phases of LT1-and LT2-Mg_(2)NiH_(4) between 488 K and 733 K from in-situ transmission electron microscope(TEM) video, with the volume contraction reaching 18.7% and 11.3%, respectively. The mechanisms for volume contraction of LT1 and LT2 phases are elucidated from the viewpoints of phase transformation, magnetic transition, and dehydrogenation, which is different from common NTE materials containing flexible polyhedra units in the structure. The linear volume shrinkage of LT2 in the temperature of 488-553 K corresponds to the phase transition of LT2→HT with a thermal expansion coefficient of -799.7 × 10^(-6) K^(-1) revealed by in-situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. The sudden volume contraction in LT1 between 488 and 493 K may be caused by the rapid dehydrogenation of LT1 to Mg_(2)Ni. The revealed phenomenon in single composite material with different structures would be significant for preparing zero thermal expansion materials by tuning the fraction of LT1 and LT2 phases. 展开更多

With the increasing attention received by lightweight metals, numerous essential fields have increased requirements for mag-nesium(Mg)alloys with good room-temperature and high-temperature mechanical properties. However, the high-temperature mechanic-al properties of commonly used commercial Mg alloys, such as AZ91D,deteriorate considerably with increasing temperatures.Over the past several decades, extensive efforts have been devoted to developing heat-resistant Mg alloys. These approaches either inhibit the gen-eration of thermally unstable phases or promote the formation of thermally stable precipitates/phases in matrices through solid solution or precipitation strengthening. In this review, numerous studies are systematically introduced and discussed.Different alloy systems,includ-ing those based on Mg–Al,Mg–Zn,and Mg–rare earth, are carefully classified and compared to reveal their mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms. The emphasis, limitations, and future prospects of these heat-resistant Mg alloys are also pointed out and dis-cussed to develop heat-resistant Mg alloys and broaden their potential application areas in the future. 展开更多

Rechargeable magnesium-metal batteries(RMMBs)are promising next-generation secondary batteries;however, their development is inhibited by the low capacity and short cycle lifespan of cathodes.Although various strategies have been devised to enhance the Mg^(2+)migration kinetics and structural stability of cathodes, they fail to improve electronic conductivity, rendering the cathodes incompatible with magnesium-metal anodes.Herein,we propose a dual-defect engineering strategy, namely, the incorporation of Mg^(2+)pre-intercalation defect(P-Mgd)and oxygen defect(Od),to simultaneously improve the Mg^(2+)migration kinetics, structural stability, and electronic conductivity of the cathodes of RMMBs.Using lamellar V_(2)O_(5)·nH_(2)O as a demo cathode material,we prepare a cathode comprising Mg_(0.07)V_(2)O_(5)·1.4H_(2)O nanobelts composited with reduced graphene oxide(MVOH/rGO)with P-Mgd and Od.The Od enlarges interlayer spacing, accelerates Mg^(2+)migration kinetics, and prevents structural collapse, while the P-Mgd stabilizes the lamellar structure and increases electronic conductivity.Consequently, the MVOH/rGO cathode exhibits a high capacity of 197 mAh g^(−1),and the developed Mg foil//MVOH/rGO full cell demonstrates an incredible lifespan of 850 cycles at 0.1 A g^(−1),capable of powering a light-emitting diode. The proposed dual-defect engineering strategy provides new insights into developing high-durability,high-capacity cathodes, advancing the practical application of RMMBs,and other new secondary batteries. 展开更多

Magnesium and magnesium alloy foils have great potential for application in battery anodes, electromagnetic shielding, optics and acoustics, and biology because of their excellent specific damping, internal dissipation coefficients, magnetic and electrical conductivities,as well as high theoretical specific capacity. However, magnesium alloys exhibit poor deformation ability due to their hexagonal close-packed crystal structure.Preparing magnesium and magnesium alloy foils with thicknesses of less than 0.1 mm is difficult because of surface oxidation and grain growth at high temperatures or severe anisotropy after cold rolling that leads to cracks.Numerous methods have been applied to prepare magnesium alloy foils. They include warm rolling, cold rolling, accumulative roll bonding, electric plastic rolling, and on-line heating rolling.Defects of magnesium and magnesium alloy foils during preparation, such as edge cracks and breakage, are important factors for consideration.Herein, the current status of the research on magnesium and magnesium alloy foils is summarized from the aspects of foil preparation, defect control, performance characterization, and application prospects. The advantages and disadvantages of different preparation methods and defect(edge cracks and breakage)mechanisms in the preparation of foils are identified. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg),being the lightest structural metal, holds immense potential for widespread applications in various fields. The development of high-performance and cost-effective Mg alloys is crucial to further advancing their commercial utilization. With the rapid advancement of machine learning(ML)technology in recent years,the“data-driven''approach for alloy design has provided new perspectives and opportunities for enhancing the performance of Mg alloys. This paper introduces a novel regression-based Bayesian optimization active learning model(RBOALM)for the development of high-performance Mg-Mn-based wrought alloys.RBOALM employs active learning to automatically explore optimal alloy compositions and process parameters within predefined ranges, facilitating the discovery of superior alloy combinations. This model further integrates pre-established regression models as surrogate functions in Bayesian optimization, significantly enhancing the precision of the design process.Leveraging RBOALM,several new high-performance alloys have been successfully designed and prepared.Notably, after mechanical property testing of the designed alloys, the Mg-2.1Zn-2.0Mn-0.5Sn-0.1Ca alloy demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties, including an ultimate tensile strength of 406 MPa,a yield strength of 287 MPa,and a 23%fracture elongation.Furthermore, the Mg-2.7Mn-0.5Al-0.1Ca alloy exhibits an ultimate tensile strength of 211 MPa,coupled with a remarkable 41%fracture elongation. 展开更多

As highly integrated circuits continue to advance, accompanied by a growing demand for energy efficiency and weight reduction, materials are confronted with mounting challenges pertaining to thermal conductivity and lightweight properties.By virtue of numerous intrinsic mechanisms,as a result, the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the Mg alloys are often inversely related, which becomes a bottleneck limiting the application of Mg alloys.Based on several effective modification methods to improve the thermal conductivity of Mg alloys, this paper describes the law of how they affect the mechanical properties, and clearly indicates that peak aging treatment is one of the best ways to simultaneously enhance an alloy's thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. As the most frequently used Mg alloy, cast alloys exhibit substantial potential for achieving high thermal conductivity. Moreover, recent reports indicate that hot deformation can significantly improve the mechanical properties while maintaining, and potentially slightly enhancing, the alloy's thermal conductivity. This presents a meaningful way to develop Mg alloys for applications in the field of small-volume heat dissipation components that require high strength. This comprehensive review begins by outlining standard testing and prediction methods, followed by the theoretical models used to predict thermal conductivity, and then explores the primary influencing factors affecting thermal conductivity. The review summarizes the current development status of Mg alloys, focusing on the quest for alloys that offer both high thermal conductivity and high strength. It concludes by providing insights into forthcoming prospects and challenges within this field. 展开更多

Mg-based amorphous alloys exhibit efficient catalytic performance and excellent biocompatibility with a promising application probability, specifically in the field of azo dye wastewater degradation. However, the problems like difficulty in preparation and poor cycling stability need to be solved. At present,Mg-based amorphous alloys applied in wastewater degradation are available in powder and ribbon. The amorphous alloy powder fabricated by ball milling has a high specific surface area, and its reactivity is thousands of times better than that of gas atomized alloy powder. But the development is limited due to the high energy consumption, difficult and costly process of powder recycling. The single roller melt-spinning method is a new manufacturing process of amorphous alloy ribbon.Compared to amorphous powder, the specific surface area of amorphous ribbon is relatively lower, therefore,it is necessary to carry out surface modification to enhance it.Dealloying is a way that can form a pore structure on the surface of the amorphous alloys, increasing the specific surface area and providing more reactive sites, which all contribute to the catalytic performance.Exploring the optimal conditions for Mg-based amorphous alloys in wastewater degradation by adjusting amorphous alloy composition, choosing suitable method to preparation and surface modification, reducing cost, expanding the pH range will advance the steps to put Mg-based amorphous alloys in industrial environments into practice. 展开更多

A novel lightweight,radiation-shielding Mg-Ta-Al layered metal-matrix composite(LMC)was successful designed by doping the extremely refractory metal(Ta)into Mg sheets. These Mg-based LMCs sheets shows excellent radiation-dose shield effect, about 145 krad·a^(−1),which is about 17 times of traditional Mg alloy, while its surface density is only about 0.9 g·cm^(−2),reducing by 60%than that of pure Ta.The quantitate relationship between radiation-dose and the materials’thickness was also confirmed to the logistic function when the surface density is in the range of 0.6-1.5 g·cm^(−2).Meantime,the rolling parameters, interface microstructure and mechanical properties in both as-rolled and annealing treated samples were evaluated. The sheets possess a special dissimilar atoms diffusion transitional zone containing an obvious inter-diffusion Mg-Al interface and the unique micro-corrugated Ta-Al interface,as well as a thin Al film with a thickness of about 10μm.The special zone could reduce the stress concentration and enhance the strength of Mg-Ta-Al LMCs.The interface bonding strength reaches up to 54-76 MPa.The ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and yield strength(TYS)of the Mg-Ta-Al sheet were high to 413 MPa and 263 MPa,respectively, along with an elongation of 5.8%.The molecular dynamics(MD)analysis results show that the two interfaces exhibit different formation mechanism, the Mg-Al interface primarily depended on Mg/Al atoms diffusion basing point defects movement, while the Ta-Al interface with a micro-interlock pining shape formed by close-packed planes slipping during high temperature strain-induced deformation process. 展开更多

Nickel-rich layered oxide cathode(LiNi_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(1−x−y)O_(2),x>0.5,NCM)shows substantial potential for applications in longer-range electrical vehicles. However, the rapid capacity decay and serious safety concerns impede its practical viability. This work provides a hydrogen-bonded organic framework(HOF)modification strategy to simultaneously improve the electrochemical performance, thermal stability and incombustibility of separator.Melamine cyanurate(MCA),as a low-cost and reliable flame-retardant HOF,was implemented in the separator modification layer, which can prevent the battery short circuit even at a high temperature. In addition, the supermolecule properties of MCA provide unique physical and chemical microenvironment for regulating ion-transport behavior in electrolyte. The MCA coating layer enabled the nickel-rich layered oxide cathode with a high-capacity retention of 90.3%after 300 cycles at 1.0 C.Collectively, the usage of MCA in lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)affords a simple,low-cost and efficient strategy to improve the security and service life of nickel-rich layered cathodes. 展开更多

Rechargeable Mg batteries(RMBs)have become one of the best subsitutes for lithium-ion batteries due to the high volumetric capacity, abundant resources, and uniform plating behavior of Mg metal anode. However, the safety hazard induced by the formation of high-modulue Mg dendrites under a high current density(10 mA cm^(-1))was still revealed in recent years. It has forced researchers to re-examine the safety of RMBs.In this review, the intrinsic safety factors of key components in RMBs,such as uneven plating, pitting and flammability of Mg anode, heat release and crystalline water decomposition of cathode, strong corrosion, low oxidition stability and flammability of electrolytes, and soforth, are systematacially summarized.Their origins, formation mechanisms, and possible safety hazards are deeply discussed. To develop high-performance Mg anode, current strategies including designing artificial SEI,three-dimensional substrates, and Mg alloys are summarized. For practical electrolytes, the configurations of boron-centered anions and simple Mg salts and the functionalized solvent with high boiling point and low flammability are suggested to comprehensively design. In addition, the future study should more focus on the investigation on the thermal runaway and decomposition of cathode materials and separa-tors.This review aims to provide fundamental insights into the relationship between electrochemistry and safety, further promoting the sustainable development of RMBs. 展开更多

Coating technologies are a commonly used way to protect metals against corrosion. However, with more and more severe service environments of materials, many protective coating systems often are not environmentally friendly or toxic as in the case of chromates.Based on the world’s abundant ideal magnesium(Mg)and its alloy, the smart self-healing anticorrosive coating can autonomously restore the damaged part of the coating according to the environmental changes, strengthen the corrosion protection ability, and prolong its service life. This paper reviews the research progress of smart self-healing coatings on Mg alloys. These coatings mostly contain suitable corrosion inhibitors encapsulated into micro/nano containers. Moreover, the different self-healing mechanisms and functionalities of micro/nano containers are discussed. The micro/nano containers range from inorganic nanocontainers such as mesoporous nanoparticles(silica(SiO_(2)),titanium dioxide(TiO_(2)),etc.),over inorganic clays(halloysite,hydrotalcite-like,zeolite),to organic nanocontainers such as polymer microcapsules, nanofibers, chitosan(CS)and cyclodextrin(CD),as well as,carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes and hybrids such as metal organic frameworks. The functioning of micro/nano containers can be divided in two principal groups:autonomous(based on defect filling and corrosion inhibition)and non-autonomous(based on dynamic bonds and shape memory polymers). Moreover, multi functionalities and composite applications of various micro/nano containers are summarized. At present, significant progress has been made in the preparation methods and technologies of micro/nano containers.Achieving long-term self-healing properties of coatings sensing of coating failure and early warning after self-healing function failure can be expected as the main development direction of self-healing corrosion protection coatings in the future. 展开更多

Optimizing the mechanical properties and damping capacity of the duplex-structured Mg–Li–Zn–Mn alloy by tailoring the microstructure via hot extrusion was investigated. The results show that the Mg–8Li–4Zn–1Mn alloy is mainly composed ofα-Mg,β-Li,Mg–Li–Zn and Mn phases. The microstructure of the test alloy is refined owing to dynamic recrystallization(DRX)during hot extrusion. After hot extrusion, the crushed precipitates are uniformly distributed in the test alloy. The yield strength(YS),ultimate tensile strength(UTS),and elongation(EL)of as-extruded alloy reach 156 MPa,208 MPa,and 32.3%,respectively,which are much better than that of as-cast alloy.Furthermore, the as-extruded and as-cast alloys both exhibit superior damping capacities, with the damping capacity(Q^(-1))of 0.030 and 0.033 at the strain amplitude of 2×10^(-3),respectively.The mechanical properties of the test alloy can be significantly improved by hot extrusion, whereas the damping capacities have no noticeable change, which indicates that the duplex-structured Mg–Li alloys with appropriate mechanical properties and damping properties can be obtained by alloying and hot extrusion. 展开更多

Owing to the features(high safety, inexpensive and environmental friendliness)of aqueous rechargeable Mg-ion batteries(ARMIBs),they have drawn extensive attention in the future energy storage systems. However, the poor Mg^(2+)migration kinetics during the Mg^(2+)intercalation/extraction still hinders the progress of developing suitable cathode materials.Herein,a layered buserite Mg-Mn oxide(MMO)material with large interlayer space(~9.70A)and low-crystalline structure is studied as a high-performance cathode in ARMIBs.Compared with the counterpart, the Mg^(2+)migration kinetics of the MMO cathode can be enhanced by its unique structure(bigger interlayer spacing and low-crystalline structure). The layered buserite MMO as a high-performance ARMIBs cathode exhibits high Mg storage capacity(50 mAg^(-1):169.3 mAh g^(-1)),excellent rate capability(1000 mAg^(-1):98.3 mAh g^(-1)),and fast Mg^(2+)migration(an average diffusion coefficient:~4.21×10-^(10)cm^(2)s^(-1))in 0.5 M MgCl_(2)aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, the MMO-1//AC full battery achieved a high discharge capacity(100 mAg^(-1):111 mAh g^(-1)),and an ignored fading over 5000 cycles(1000 mAg^(-1)).Therefore,layered Mg-Mn oxide with large interlayer space may break a new path to develop the promising ARMIBs. 展开更多

Rechargeable magnesium batteries(RMBs),as one of the most promising candidates for efficient energy storage devices with high energy, power density and high safety, have attracted increasing attention. However, searching for suitable cathode materials with fast diffusion kinetics and exploring their magnesium storage mechanisms remains a great challenge.Cu S submicron spheres, made by a facile low-temperature synthesis strategy, were applied as the high-performance cathode for RMBs in this work, which can deliver a high specific capacity of 396mAh g^(-1)at 20 mA g^(-1) and a remarkable rate capacity of 250 m Ah g^(-1)at 1000 mA g^(-1).The excellent rate performance can be assigned to the nano needle-like particles on the surface of Cu S submicron spheres, which can facilitate the diffusion kinetics of Mg^(2+).Further storage mechanism investigations illustrate that the Cu S cathodes experience a two-step conversion reaction controlled by diffusion during the electrochemical reaction process. This work could make a contribution to the study of the enhancement of diffusion kinetics of Mg2+and the reaction mechanism of RMBs. 展开更多
