The worst droughts in the central part of the North American Prairie in the past several hundred years have been reconstructed from tree-ring chronologies,suggesting that some drought years have exceeded the severity ...The worst droughts in the central part of the North American Prairie in the past several hundred years have been reconstructed from tree-ring chronologies,suggesting that some drought years have exceeded the severity shown by the gauge record.A general circulation model of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory(GFDL) has simulated climate changes for the area during the past 250 years driven by climatic forces,providing scenarios of extreme climate that can further diagnose the mechanisms.This study refined the drought signals from the tree ring data and GFDL modeling at inter-annual and decadal time scales and analyzed the potential mechanisms driving the droughts.Results showed that drought years with summer precipitation lower than the 10 th percentiles occurred during 1777-1789,1847-1861 and 1886-1879 AD in the area.Both tree rings and model revealed that the frequency of droughts has been relatively consistent in a similar timing and frequency with climate change.Monte Carlo analysis have detected that the tree ring chronologies have recorded drought years with probabilities of 9.3%-12.8%,and the model has simulated the droughts with probabilities 5.7%-17.8%.Under CO 2 and aerosol forcing,the GFDL modeled the drought recurrences of 13 years and 25 years,which are very synchronous changes with tree rings and consistent with gauge records.The 20-a and 10-a time scale reoccurrences of droughts are very consistent with solar radiation cycles,and similar to the length of cycles in oceanic records,suggesting that terrestrial precipitation modeling is properly driven from sun-land-sea dynamics.Detected severity,variability and return periods of droughts from the present study make potential improvements in drought predictions and constructing scenarios for climate impacts and adaptation strategies.展开更多
Due to the complexity of blockchain technology,it usually costs too much effort to build,maintain and monitor a blockchain system that supports a targeted application.To this end,the emerging“Blockchain as a Service...Due to the complexity of blockchain technology,it usually costs too much effort to build,maintain and monitor a blockchain system that supports a targeted application.To this end,the emerging“Blockchain as a Service”(BaaS)makes the blockchain and distributed ledgers more accessible,particularly for businesses,by reducing costs and overheads.BaaS combines the high computing power of cloud computing,the pervasiveness of IoT and the decentralization of blockchain,allowing people to build their own applications while ensuring the transparency and openness of the system.This paper surveys the research outputs of both academia and industry.First,it introduces the representative architectures of BaaS systems and then summarizes the research contributions of BaaS from the technologies for service provision,roles,container and virtualization,interfaces,customization and evaluation.The typical applications of BaaS in both academic and practical domains are also introduced.At present,the research on the blockchain is abundant,but research on BaaS is still in its infancy.Six challenges of BaaS are concluded in this paper for further study directions.展开更多
Background Intrauterine growth restriction(IUGR)can cause lipid disorders in infants and have long-term adverse effects on their growth and development.Clostridium butyricum(C.butyricum),a kind of emerging probiotics,...Background Intrauterine growth restriction(IUGR)can cause lipid disorders in infants and have long-term adverse effects on their growth and development.Clostridium butyricum(C.butyricum),a kind of emerging probiotics,has been reported to effectively attenuate lipid metabolism dysfunctions.Therefore,the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of C.butyricum supplementation on hepatic lipid disorders in IUGR suckling piglets.Methods Sixteen IUGR and eight normal birth weight(NBW)neonatal male piglets were used in this study.From d 3to d 24,in addition to drinking milk,the eight NBW piglets(NBW-CON group,n=8)and eight IUGR piglets(IUGR-CON group,n=8)were given 10 mL sterile saline once a day,while the remaining IUGR piglets(IUGR-CB group,n=8)were orally administered C.butyricum at a dose of 2×108colony-forming units(CFU)/kg body weight(suspended in 10 mL sterile saline)at the same frequency.Results The IUGR-CON piglets exhibited restricted growth,impaired hepatic morphology,disordered lipid metabolism,increased abundance of opportunistic pathogens and altered ileum and liver bile acid(BA)profiles.However,C.butyricum supplementation reshaped the gut microbiota of the IUGR-CB piglets,characterized by a decreased abundance of opportunistic pathogens in the ileum,including Streptococcus and Enterococcus.The decrease in these bile salt hydrolase(BSH)-producing microbes increased the content of conjugated BAs,which could be transported to the liver and function as signaling molecules to activate liver X receptorα(LXRα)and farnesoid X receptor(FXR).This activation effectively accelerated the synthesis and oxidation of fatty acids and down-regulated the total cholesterol level by decreasing the synthesis and promoting the efflux of cholesterol.As a result,the growth performance and morphological structure of the liver improved in the IUGR piglets.Conclusion These results indicate that C.butyricum supplementation in IUGR suckling piglets could decrease the abundance of BSH-producing microbes(Streptococcus and Enterococcus).This decrease altered the ileum and liver BA profiles and consequently activated the expression of hepatic LXRαand FXR.The activation of these two signaling molecules could effectively normalize the lipid metabolism and improve the growth performance of IUGR suckling piglets.展开更多
IrRu bimetallic oxides are recognized as the promising acidic oxygen evolution reaction(OER)catalysts,but breaking the trade-off between their activity and stability is an unresolved question.Meanwhile,addressing the ...IrRu bimetallic oxides are recognized as the promising acidic oxygen evolution reaction(OER)catalysts,but breaking the trade-off between their activity and stability is an unresolved question.Meanwhile,addressing the issues of mass transport obstruction of IrRu bimetallic oxides under high current remains a challenge for the development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis(PEM-WE).Herein,we prepared an IrRuO_(x)nanomeshes(IrRuO_(x)NMs)with high coordination number(CN)of Ir-O-Ru bonds in a mixed molten salt with high solubility of the Ir/Ru precursor.X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis revealed that the IrRuO_(x)NMs possess high coordination number of Ir-O-Ru bonds(CNIr-O-Ru=5.6)with a distance of 3.18Å.Moreover,the nanomesh structures of IrRuO_(x)NMs provided hierarchical channels to accelerate the transport of oxygen and water,thus further improving the electrochemical activity.Consequently,the IrRuO_(x)NMs as OER catalysts can simultaneously achieve high activity and stability with low overpotential of 196 mV to reach 10 mA·cm^(−2)and slightly increase by 70 mV over 650 h test.Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry tests suggest that the preferred OER mechanism for IrRuO_(x)NMs is the adsorbent evolution mechanism,which is beneficial for the robust structural stability.展开更多
