Application of artificial intelligence in tongue diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine:A review

Tongue diagnosis is an important process to non-invasively assess the condition of a patient’s internal organs in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and each part of the tongue is related to corresponding internal organs.Due to continuing computer technological advances,especially the artificial intelligence(AI)methods have achieved significant success in tackling tongue image acquisition,processing,and classification,novel AI methods are being introduced in traditional Chinese medicine tongue diagnosis medical practices.Traditional tongue diagnose depends on observations of tongue characteristics,such as color,shape,texture,moisture,etc.by traditional Chinese medicine physicians.The appearance of the tongue color,texture and coating reflects the improvement or deterioration of patient’s conditions.Moreover,AI can now distinguish patient’s condition through tongue images,texture or coating,which is all possible increasingly with help from traditional Chinese medicine physicians under the traditional Chinese medicine tongue theory.AI has enabled humans to do what was previously unimagined:traditional Chinese medicine tongue diagnosis with feeding a large amount of tongue image and tongue texture/coating data to train the AI modes.This review focuses on the research advances of AI in TCM tongue diagnosis thus far to identify the major scientific methods and prospects.In this article,we tried to review the AI application in resolving the tongue diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine on color correction,tongue image extraction,tongue texture/coating segmentation.

A New Integral Equation for the Spheroidal Equations in Case of m Equal to 1

The spheroidal wave functions are investigated in the case $m = 1$. The integral equation is obtained for them. There are two kinds of eigenvalues in the differential and corresponding integral equations, and the relation between them is given explicitly. This is the great advantage of our integral equation, which will provide useful information through the study of the integral equation. Also an example is given for the special case, which shows another way to study the eigenvalue problem.

The roles of traditional Chinese herbal medications in regulating mitochondrial activity to reverse cancer

Cancer was gradually regarded as a metabolic disease,which might be linked to impairment of mitochondrial function.There are really some essential differences between the mitochondria of normal and cancer cells,which might become promising target for cancer chemotherapy.According to western pharmacology,a known target was needed for drug development.Unfortunately,the number of therapeutic agents relating to the mitochondrion are severely limited because of lacking of knowledge about mitochondrial biology.Unlike the“Western Medicine”,some traditional Chinese herbal medicine(TCHM)might be prone to targeting mitochondria despite the lack of precise molecular mechanisms.If it is the case,we might be able to screen and identify active anti-cancer drugs from traditional Chinese therapeutics by using mitochondrial functional assay.In this review,we would give an overview of the effect of TCHM on the mitochondrion,and the challenges and breakthroughs remaining in cancer treatment.

Treatment of refractory H.pylori by Chai Ping Decoction:two case reports

目的:幽门螺杆菌感染是最常见的感染之一,目前已经广泛应用了很多医学治疗措施,比如四联疗法和序贯疗法。但部分患者经多次治疗仍有感染。在幽门螺杆菌感染的治疗中,中药得到了广泛的应用。对于反复感染幽门螺杆菌的患者,中医治疗与抗生素治疗相结合是否有效尚需临床观察。方法:报告2例难治性幽门螺杆菌感染病例。一例是一名60岁的中国妇女,诊断为慢性萎缩性胃炎和幽门螺杆菌感染,胃部不适,食欲不振,情绪低落,排便不规律。另一例是一名46岁的越南妇女,已经腹痛11年。我们采用柴平汤联合序贯治疗两例患者。结果:两例患者治疗后均疼痛缓解,幽门螺杆菌被根除。结论:中药联合序贯治疗可能清除幽门螺杆菌感染。根据中医理论,患者出现腹部不适症状,为脾虚湿气证,可以被较好的治疗。

Discovery of the mechanisms of acupuncture in the treatment of migraine based on functional magnetic resonance imaging and omics

Migraine is one of the most prevalent and disabling neurological disease,but the current pharmacotherapies show limited efficacy and often accompanied by adverse effects.Acupuncture is a promising complementary therapy,but further clinical evidence is needed.The influence of acupuncture on migraine is not an immediate effect,and its mechanism remains unclear.This study aims to provide further clinical evidence for the anti-migraine effects of acupuncture and explore the mechanism involved.A randomized controlled trial was performed among 10 normal controls and 38 migraineurs.The migraineurs were divided into blank control,sham acupuncture,and acupuncture groups.Patients were subjected to two courses of treatment,and each treatment lasted for 5 days,with an interval of 1 day between the two courses.The effectiveness of treatment was evaluated using pain questionnaire.The functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)data were analyzed for investigating brain changes induced by treatments.Blood plasma was collected for metabolomics and proteomics studies.Correlation and mediation analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between clinical,fMRI and omics changes.Results showed that acupuncture effectively relieved migraine symptoms in a way different from sham acupuncture in terms of curative effect,affected brain regions,and signaling pathways.The anti-migraine mechanism involves a complex network related to the regulation of the response to hypoxic stress,reversal of brain energy imbalance,and regulation of inflammation.The brain regions of migraineurs affected by acupuncture include the lingual gyrus,default mode network,and cerebellum.The effect of acupuncture on patients’metabolites/proteins may precede that of the brain.

Papers published from 1995 to 2012 by six Traditional Chinese Medicine universities in China: a bibliometric analysis based on science citation index

OBJECTIVE: The quality and quantity of published research papers are important in both scientific and technology fields. Although there are several bibliometric studies based on citation analysis, very few have focused on research related to Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. METHODS: The bibliometric method used in this study included the following focuses: publication outputs for each year, paper type, language of publication, distribution of internationally collaborative countries, sources of funding, authorization number, distribution of institutes regarding collaborative publications, research fields, distribution of out-puts in journals, citation data, and h-index. RESULTS: A total of 3809 papers published from 1995 to 2012 were extracted from the science citation index(SCI). The cumulative number of papers from all six universities is constantly increasing. The United States attained the dominant position regarding complementary and alternative medicine research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the greatest participator in collaborative efforts. Research field analysis showed that the research mainly focused on pharmacology pharmacy, chemistry, integrative complementary medicine, plant sciences, and biochemistry molecular biology. The Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine had the most citations. CONCLUSION: In recent years, in terms of SCI papers, the six Traditional Chinese Medicine universities studied here have made great advances in scientific research.
