The existing LCC-HVDC transmission project adopts the fixed-time delay restarting method.This method has disadvantages such as non-selectivity,long restart process,and high probability of restart failure.These issues cause a secondary impact on equipment and system power fluctuation.To solve this problem,an adaptive restarting method based on the principle of fault location by current injection is proposed.First,an additional control strategy is proposed to inject a current detection signal.Second,the propagation law of the current signal in the line is analyzed based on the distributed parameter model of transmission line.Finally,a method for identifying fault properties based on the principle of fault location is proposed.The method fully considers the influence of the long-distance transmission line with earth capacitance and overcomes the influence of the increasing effect of the opposite terminal.Simulation results show that the proposed method can accurately identify the fault properties under various complex fault conditions and subsequently realize the adaptive restarting process. 展开更多

The control system of voltage source converter HVDC (VSC-HVDC) is complex and its fault tolerance ability is not sufficient, and correct rate of line protection device is not high. A novel pilot protection for VSC-HVDC transmission lines based on correlation analysis is proposed in this paper. In the principle, external fault is equivalent to a positive capacitance model, so the correlation coefficient of the current and voltage derivative is 1;while the internal fault is equivalent to a negative capacitance model, so the correlation coefficient of the current and voltage derivative is -1. Internal faults and external faults can be distinguished by judging the correlation coefficient. Theoretical analysis and PSCAD simulation experiments show that the new principle, which is simple, not affected by transition resistance, control type and line distributed capacitance current, can identify internal faults and external faults reliably and rapidly, having certain practical value. 展开更多

The setting work of backup protection using steady-state current is tedious,and mismatches occasionally occur due to the increased proportion of distributed generations(DGs)connected to the power grid.Thus,there is a practical need to study a backup protection technology that does not require step-by-step setting and can be adaptively coordinated.This paper proposes an action sequence adaptive to fault positions that uses only positive sequence fault component(PSFC)voltage.Considering the influence of DGs,the unified time dial setting can be obtained by selecting specific points.The protection performance is improved by using the adjacent upstream and downstream protections to meet the coordination time interval in the case of metallic faults at the near-and far-ends of the line.Finally,the expression and implementation scheme for inverse-time backup protection(ITBP)based on the unified characteristic equation is given.Simulation results show that this scheme can adapt to DG penetration scenarios and can realize the adaptive coordination of multi-level relays. 展开更多

An analytical method of fault characteristic for the HVDC system based on frequency response characteristics of boundary elements is presented here.The computational formulas of transfer function and input impedance are deduced using the distributed parameter model of HVDC transmission line,and the amplitude-to-frequency-characteristics of the transfer function and input impedance are analyzed.Based on the amplitude-to-frequency difference between internal and external faults,a non-unit protection method for VSC-HVDC transmission line is presented.Using the current ratio of high-to-low-frequency,this protection method can distinguish internal from external fault.The presented algorithm only uses local-end current,has high operation speed,and is easy to implement.Simulations on a±200 kV VSC-HVDC system are conducted to demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the developed protection method. 展开更多

Considering the advantages and limitations of traditional identification method,combined with the strategy of active detection,the principle of DC grid pilot protection based on active detection is proposed to improve the sensitivity and reliability of hybrid MMC DC grid protection,and to ensure the accurate identification of fault areas in DC grid.By using the DC fault ride-through control strategy of the hybrid sub-module MMC,the fault current at the converter station DC terminal is limited.Based on the high controllability of hybrid MMC,sinusoidal fault detection signals with the same frequency are injected into the line at each converter station.Based on model recognition,the capacitance model condition is satisfied by the detected signals at both ends during external faults whereas not satisfied during internal faults.The Spearman correlation coefficients is then introduced,and the correlation discriminant of capacitance model is constructed to realize fault area discrimination of DC grid.The simulation results show that the active detection protection scheme proposed in this paper can accurately identify the fault area of DC grid,and is not affected by fault impedance and has low sampling rate requirement. 展开更多

Doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG)-based wind farm has the characteristic of transient fault with low voltage ride through(LVRT)capability.A new three-phase fault direction identification method for the outgoing transmission line of the wind farm is presented.The ability of the new directional relay to differentiate between a three-phase fault in one direction or the other is obtained by using the increment of phase angle difference between the memory voltage signal and the fault current signal within a certain time,and using the amplitude variation of the fault current.It can be inferred that the fault current is supplied by the wind farm whether the phase angle differs or the current amplitude varies considerably.Different fault locations at the outgoing transmission line have been simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC to evaluate the reliability and sensitivity of the proposed technique.Results show that the new directional relay is of faster response when a three-phase fault occurs at the outgoing transmission line of a DFIG-based wind farm. 展开更多

A fault identification scheme for protection and adaptive reclosing is proposed for a hybrid multi-terminal HVDC system to increase the reliability of fault isolation and reclosing.By analyzing the"zero passing"characteristic of current at the local end during the converter capacitor discharge stage,the fault identification scheme is proposed.The distributed parameter-based fault location equation,which incorporates fault distance and fault impedance,is developed with the injection signal and the distributed parameter model during the adaptive reclosing stage.The fault distance is determined using a trust region reflection algorithm to identify the permanent fault,and a fault iden-tification scheme for adaptive reclosing is developed.Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is suitable for long-distance transmission lines with strong anti-fault impedance and anti-interference performance.Also,it is less affected by communication delay and DC boundary strength than existing methods. 展开更多
