Since the first reported AIDS case in 1985, the development of the epidemic in China may be broadly divided into three stages: the stage of infection via foreigners (1985-1988), that of low prevalence (1989- 1993) and that of high prevalence (1994- now). By December 2004 the population infected by HIV had reached 840,000, while "HIV / AIDS is spreading from high-risk groups to the general population." In the same year, the prevention and control of AIDS was treated as a matter of high importance in a State Council document that related it to "economic growth, social stability, state security and national prosperity."2 This statement was interpreted by the Ministry of Health as meaning that the prevention and control of AIDS was "a critical task for the quality of the people and the rise of the nation," and should be treated as "concrete embodiment of China's responsibilities to international society and to the survival and devel-opment of humanity." 展开更多

On the one hand, as the first large-scale military clash between the Eastern and the Western camps since onset of the Cold War, the Korean War might have led to a new world war; on the other hand, it was also the first "limited war" between the two camps that was ended through dialogues and negotiations, hence avoiding an unprecedented catastrophe for humanity. This issue, contributed by Chinese researchers, is meant to explore what factors caused this war and what brought it to an end. 展开更多
