Ibadan has experienced a rapid urbanization over the past few decades due to heavy influx of people from different parts of the country as a result of improved economy of the region. This development induced a great change in land use and land cover over the region which has become a major environmental concern recently. This study assessed Land Surface Temperature (LST) and its spatio-temporal relationship with land cover type over Ibadan. Land use/Land cover dynamics were assessed using index maps generated from Landsat Satellite data (TM, ETM+ and OLI) of Ibadan. The corrected thermal Infrared bands of the Landsat data were used to retrieve LST. The results revealed a notable increase in built-up areas from 5.64% of the total land cover area in 1984 to 14.05% in 2014. This change has caused increase in surface temperature of Ibadan from 3.56?C to 8.54?C between 1984 and 2014 respectively. The study recorded a continuous decrease in the vegetal part of Ibadan (from 43.28% in 1984 to 14.76 in 2014) which could be attributed to anthropogenic activities as the vegetated land area lost was been converted to other form of land use. The change was found to be positively correlated to the surface temperature intensity over the region with correlation coefficient, r value of 0.9251, 0.8256 and 0.7017 in 1984, 2000 and 2014 respectively. It is recommended that Policies should be considered for planting trees, new guidelines for urban landscape design and construction. 展开更多

Air pollution has been identified to be one major problem associated with urbanisation, particularly in developing countries. In this regard, this paper utilizes data from a year-long experiment of simultaneous measurements to examine and compare the variations of carbon monoxide concentrations, a major air pollutant at urban and rural site in Akure, a medium-sized tropical city in south western Nigeria. The comparison was done to assess the urban influence on the air pollutant. CO concentrations at the urban centre have been identified to exhibit distinct diurnal and day-of-week variations with respect to traffic rush hours. It is also observed that the concentrations at the urban centre were 2 - 3 times higher than that of the rural site which exhibited a consistent cyclic diurnal pattern throughout the week. Results further identified the major cause of CO concentration in the urban centre to be vehicular as consistent increase of the air pollutant from 08:00 to 16:00 during the weekdays is found to be associated with “school runs and rush hours” and also rises through the midnight hours on days linked with social events, particularly Saturdays. In relation to human health and World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, results showed that CO concentrations at the urban centre exceeded the WHO 8-hour average recommendation during daytime throughout the weekdays. 展开更多

Cold pools and associated wind storms are frequent occurrences in Southwestern Nigeria, especially during the early monsoon phase. The associated surface wind gust frequently destroys properties resulting in economic losses. Two case events were investigated in this study;one event occurred in May 2019 and the other occurred in March 2020, both in southwestern Nigeria. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)/Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Infrared brightness temperatures and CPC Morphing technique (CMORPH) rainfall products were analysed alongside in-situ observations from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET). Other data sources analysed are the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Prediction Of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) and the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN). Cold pools were identified in the impacted communities as indicated by surface characteristics investigated from the in-situ observations. There was a sudden change in wind direction, with a simultaneous drop in temperature accompanied by increasing wind speed. Pressure and humidity were observed to change in the same period. Thunderstorms were also present in the impacted communities, as observed by the in-situ observations, in both case events. The presence of lightning as observed by WWLLN agrees with the in-situ thunderstorms. The cloud characteristics showed the presence of cloud shields, by their brightness temperature, over the impacted communities during the period of the cold pools in both case events. The systems were raining at the time of the observations in both cases, consistent with the in-situ thunderstorm observations. The communities were heavily impacted with several properties destroyed in the events. These early monsoon seasonal windstorms require a forecasting tool for their prediction and this study presents an eye-opener for further investigation and innovative research to address the menace. 展开更多
