This study explores the phenomenon of human hoping and its role as one addressed times of deep suffering. Vaclav Havel's writing on "deep hope" and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's classic work on embodiment were seen as points of intersection with Engaged Buddhist teachings. In-depth interviews with two Engaged Buddhists supported the premise of this paper: Deep or embodied hope is quite different from ordinary wishing or "hoping" and plays a positive role as one moved through their suffering process. 展开更多
