Synthesis and application of bilayer-surfactant-enveloped Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles: water-based bilayer-surfactant-enveloped ferrofluids

Superparamagnetic carbon-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles with high magnetization(85 emu·g-(-1)) and high crystallinity were synthesized using polyethylene glycol-4000(PEG(4000)) as a carbon source.Fe3O4 water-based bilayer-surfactant-enveloped ferrofluids were subsequently prepared using sodium oleate and PEG(4000) as dispersants.Analyses using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a bilayer surfactant coating retain the inverse spinel-type structure and are successfully coated with sodium oleate and PEG(4000).Transmission electron microscopy,vibrating sample magnetometry,and particle-size analysis results indicate that the coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles also retain the good saturation magnetization of Fe3O4(79.6 emu·g^-1) and that the particle size of the bilayer-surfactant-enveloped Fe3O4 nanoparticles is 42.97 nm,which is substantially smaller than that of the unmodified Fe3O4 nanoparticles(486.2 nm).UV-vis and zeta-potential analyses reveal that the ferrofluids does not agglomerate for 120 h at a concentration of 4 g·L^-1,which indicates that the ferrofluids are highly stable. 展开更多

Understanding the Thermal Impedance of Silicone Rubber/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Composites as Thermal Interface Materials

Silicone rubber(SR) composites are most widely used as thermal interface materials(TIMs) for electronics heat dissipation. Thermal impedance as the main bottleneck limiting the performance of TIMs is usually neglected... Silicone rubber(SR) composites are most widely used as thermal interface materials(TIMs) for electronics heat dissipation. Thermal impedance as the main bottleneck limiting the performance of TIMs is usually neglected. Herein, the thermal impedance of SR composites loaded with different levels of hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) as TIMs was elaborated for the first time by the ASTM D 5470 standard test and finite element analysis. It was found that elastic modulus and surface roughness of SR composites increased with the increase of h-BN content, indicating that the conformity was reduced. When the assembly pressure was 0.69 MPa, there existed an optimal h-BN content at which the contact resistance was minimum(0.39 K·cm^(2)·W^(-1)). Although the decreased bond line thickness(BLT) by increasing the assembly pressure was beneficial to reduce the thermal impedance, the proper assembly pressure should be selected to prevent the warpage of the contact surfaces and the increase in contact resistance, according to the compression properties of the SR composites. This study provides valuable insights into fabrication of high-performance TIMs for modern electronic device applications. 展开更多

Familial hypercholesterolemia(FH)is a common autosomal dominant disorder of lipid metabolism.Mutations in the low density lipoprotein receptor gene(LDLR)represent the majority of FH cases.LDLR mutations are codominantly inherited.Commonly,the clinical phenotype associated with heterozygous mutations is relatively mild,whereas homozygous mutations,compound heterozygous mutations,and double gene mutations in LDLR lead to severe phenotypes.However,some heterozygous FH(HeFH)and homozygous FH(HoFH)patients have similar lipid levels.Because of the quite different prognosis and treatments for these patients,accurate diagnosis is especially important.Gene testing plays an essential role in the diagnosis of FH,but finding the appropriate mutations by genetic testing is not always simple. 展开更多
