Ultrasonic fracturing(UF)can be used to form crack networks for oil or gas in the mining industry and hard rock excavation.In this paper,the three-dimensional internal laser-engraved crack method(3DILC)is introduced to make penny-shaped internal crack within the samples without any damage to the surfaces.Physical experiments were performed on the transparent samples with internal cracks at different depths.The macro-and micro-fracture fractography characteristics were focused on and analyzed in details.Based on fractography,the mechanisms of the UF were revealed.The propagation paths of cracks of different depths were simulated based on the Paris fatigue model and compared with experimental results.The results show that the 3D-ILC method is a powerful tool for the experimental research on the internal crack propagation in the UF.Under the action of ultrasonic field,fractography shows the characteristics of beach marks,lance-like pattern,rime-like pattern and glass powder.It can be judged that the mechanisms of UF include high cycle fatigue fracture,shear fracture,and friction.The results of the numerical simulation using the Paris fatigue model are consistent with the experimental results. 展开更多

Seismic wave interaction with a slippery rock joint with an arbitrary impinging angle is analytically studied based on the conservation of momentum on the wave fronts. Based on the displacement discontinuity method, the wave propagation equations are derived for incident P- and S-waves. By comparison, the calculated transmission and reflection coefficients for normal incident waves are the same as the existing results, which proves the wave propagation equation obtained in the paper is correct. The wave propagation derived in the context can be applied to incident waves with different waveforms. Stochastic seismic waves are then used to analyze the seismic wave interaction with the slippery rock joint, where the stochastic seismic waves are generated from frequency spectra. The parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect of type, intensity and impinging angle of the incident seismic waves on the wave propagation across the slippery rock joint. 展开更多

Microwave fracturing of rocks before mechanical breakage could improve the performance of mechanical excavators and reduce environmental impacts.Previous research focused on the microwave fracturing of intact rock blocks.By using an open-ended antenna,this paper investigates the effect of pre-existing joints on the microwave fracturing of the Singapore Bukit Timah granite blocks.The results show that the specimens are weakened in the manners of cracking,spalling,melting,or a combination of them.The crack number and the total crack length produced by microwave treatment of jointed rock blocks are slightly smaller than those in the intact rock blocks.The interaction between joints and microwave-induced cracks can be summarized into the following four patterns:(1)microwave-induced cracks become arrested so that the crack propagation is terminated;(2)microwave-induced cracks penetrate the joints and continue to propagate;(3)microwave-induced cracks become deflected along the joints;and(4)microwave-induced cracks propagate forward following the joints.The smaller the approach angle between the microwave-induced crack and the preexisting joint is,the more microwave-induced cracks tend to be arrested at the joint.Increasing the approach angle between the microwave-induced crack and the joint can increase the chance of microwave-induced crack penetrating the joint.The results also show that the smaller the distance is between the microwave radiation point and the joint,the easier it is for microwave-induced cracks to penetrate the joints;otherwise,the microwave-induced crack is more likely to be arrested at the pre-existing joint. 展开更多

Redundant messages will exponential growth with flooding scope increasing which severely influences the scalability of the system. In this paper, a new P2P model based on isolated broadcast domains is given to reduce the amount of redundant messages by limiting the radius of messages transmitted. Analysis and experiments show that this model can guarantee coverage of nodes and significantly reduce the amount of redundant messages generated. 展开更多

Computed tomography(CT) is one of the most commonly used non-invasive clinical imaging modalities to predict, diagnose and treat the disease. Iodinated contrast media(ICM) is a form of intravenous radiocontrast agent containing iodine, which enhances the visibility of hollow tissue structures in medical CT imaging. ICM may cause allergic reactions, contrast-induced nephropathy, hyperthyroidism and possibly metformin accumulation. It is significant to find out the risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of adverse reactions caused by ICM. Revealing the changes of the lipid droplets(LDs)viscosity in pathophysiological processes such as cancer and iodined contrast media induced adverse reaction is not only important for monitoring the occurrence and development of some pathophysiological processes but also vital for the deep insight of the biological effects of LDs in these pathophysiological processes. A lipid droplets targeted fluorescent probe DN-1 was devised to sense cellular viscosity alteration with high selectivity and sensitivity, which was applied to distinguish cancer cells and normal cells and reveal viscosity changes during iodined CT contrast media treatment. 展开更多

Numerical investigation of the influence of casting techniques on fiber orientation distribution in ECC

Engineered cementitious composites(ECC),also known as bendable concrete,were developed based on engineering the interactions between fibers and cementitious matrix.The orientation of fibers,in this regard,is one of the major factors influencing the ductile behavior of this material.In this study,fiber orientation distributions in ECC beams influenced by different casting techniques are evaluated via numerical modeling of the casting process.Two casting directions and two casting positions of the funnel outlet with beam specimens are modeled using a particle-based smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)method.In this SPH approach,fresh mortar and fiber are discretized by separated mortar and fiber particles,which smoothly interact in the computational domain of SPH.The movement of fiber particles is monitored during the casting simulation.Then,the fiber orientations at different sections of specimens are determined after the fresh ECC stops flowing in the formwork.The simulation results show a significant impact of the casting direction on fiber orientation distributions along the longitudinal wall of beams,which eventually influence the flexural strength of beams.In addition,casting positions show negligible influences on the orientation distribution of fibers in the short ECC beam,except under the pouring position. 展开更多
