Straw mulching is a widespread practice for reducing the soil carbon loss caused by erosion. However, the effects of straw mulching on dissolved organic matter(DOM)runoff loss from black soil are not well studied. How straw mulching affects the composition and loss of runoff DOM by changing soil aggregates remains largely unclear. Here,a straw mulching treatment was compared to a no mulching treatment(as a control)on sloping farmland with black soil erosion in Northeast China. We divided the soil into large macroaggregates(>2 mm),small macroaggregates(0.25-2 mm),and microaggregates(<0.25 mm). After five rain events, the effects of straw mulching on the concentration(characterized by dissolved organic carbon(DoC)and composition(analyzed by fluorescence spectroscopy)of runoff and soil aggregate DOM were studied. The results showed that straw mulching reduced the runoff amount by 54.7%.Therefore,although straw mulching increased the average DOc concentration in runoff,it reduced the total runoff DOM loss by 48.3%.The composition of runoff DOM is similar to that of soil,as both contain humic-like acid and protein-like components. With straw mulching treatment, the protein-like components in small macroaggregates accumulated and the protein-like components in runoff declined with rain events.Fluorescence spectroscopy technology may help in understanding the hydrological paths of rain events by capturing the dynamic changes of runoff and soil DOM characteristics.A variation partitioning analysis(VPA)indicated that the DOM concentration and composition of microaggregates explained 68.2%of the change in runoff DOM from no mulching plots, while the change in runoff DOM from straw mulching plots was dominated by small macroaggregates at a rate of 55.1%.Taken together, our results demonstrated that straw mulching reduces the fragmentation of small macroaggregates and the loss of microaggregates, thus effecting DOM compositions in soil and reducing the DOM loss in runoff. These results provide a theoretical basis for reducing carbon loss in sloping farmland. 展开更多

Modeling soil salinity in an arid salt-affected ecosystem is a difficult task when using remote sensing data because of the complicated soil context (vegetation cover, moisture, surface roughness, and organic matter) and the weak spectral features of salinized soil. Therefore, an index such as the salinity index (SI) that only uses soil spectra may not detect soil salinity effectively and quantitatively. The use of vegetation reflectance as an indirect indicator can avoid limitations associated with the direct use of soil reflectance. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), as the most common vegetation index, was found to be responsive to salinity but may not be available for retrieving sparse vegetation due to its sensitivity to background soil in arid areas. Therefore, the arid fraction integrated index (AFⅡ) was created as supported by the spectral mixture analysis (SMA), which is more appropriate for analyzing variations in vegetation cover (particularly halophytes) than NDVI in the study area. Using soil and vegetation separately for detecting salinity perhaps is not feasible. Then, we developed a new and operational model, the soil salinity detecting model (SDM) that combines AFⅡ and SI to quantitatively estimate the salt content in the surface soil. SDMs, including SDM1 and SDM2, were constructed through analyzing the spatial characteristics of soils with different salinization degree by integrating AFⅡ and SI using a scatterplot. The SDMs were then compared to the combined spectral response index (COSRI) from field measurements with respect to the soil salt content. The results indicate that the SDM values are highly correlated with soil salinity, in contrast to the performance of COSRI. Strong exponential relationships were observed between soil salinity and SDMs (R2〉0.86, RMSE〈6.86) compared to COSRI (R2=0.71, RMSE=16.21). These results suggest that the feature space related to biophysical properties combined with AFII and SI can effectively provide information on soil salinity. 展开更多

Vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) is an important index to describe and evaluate the ecological system. The vegetation index is widely used to monitor vegetation coverage in the field of remote sensing (RS). In this paper, the author conducted a case study of the delta oasis of Weigan and Kuqa rivers, which is a typical saline area in the Tarim River Watershed. The current study was based on the TM/ETM+ images of 1989, 2001, and 2006, and supported by Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis, vegetation index, and dimidiate pixel model. In addition, VBSl (vegetation, bare soil and shadow indices) suitable for TM/ETM+ irrlages, constructed with FCD (forest canopy density) model principle and put forward by ITTO (International Tropical Timber Organization), was used, and it was applied to estimate the VFC. The estimation accuracy was later prow^n to be up to 83.52%. Further, the study analyzed and appraised the changes in vegetation patterns and revealed a pattern of spatial change in the vegetation coverage of the study area by producing the map of VFC levels in the delta oasis. Forest, grassland, and farmland were the three main land-use types with high and extremely-high coverage, and they played an important role in maintaining the vegetation. The forest area determined the changes of the coverage area, whereas the other two land types affected the directions of change. Therefore, planting trees, protecting grasslands, reclaiming farmlands, and controlling unused lands should be included in a long-term program because of their importance in keeping regional vegetation coverage. Finally, the dynamic variation of VFC in the study area was evaluated according to the quantity and spatial distribution rendered by plant cover diigital images to deeply analyze the reason behind the variation. 展开更多

Soil salinization is one of the most important causes of land degradation and desertification, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. The dynamic monitoring of soil salinization is of great significance to land management, agricultural activities, water quality, and sustainable development. The remote sensing images taken by the synthetic aperture radar(SAR)Sentinel-1 and the multispectral satellite Sentinel-2 with high resolution and short revisit period have the potential to monitor the spatial distribution of soil attribute information on a large area;however, there are limited studies on the combination of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 for digital mapping of soil salinization. Therefore,in this study,we used topography indices derived from digital elevation model(DEM),SAR indices generated by Sentinel-1,and vegetation indices generated by Sentinel-2 to map soil salinization in the Ogan-Kuqa River Oasis located in the central and northern Tarim Basin in Xinjiang of China, and evaluated the potential of multi-source sensors to predict soil salinity.Using the soil electrical conductivity(EC)values of 70 ground sampling sites as the target variable and the optimal environmental factors as the predictive variable,we constructed three soil salinity inversion models based on classification and regression tree(CART),random forest(RF),and extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost). Then,we evaluated the prediction ability of different models through the five-fold cross validation. The prediction accuracy of XGBoost model is better than those of CART and RF,and soil salinity predicted by the three models has similar spatial distribution characteristics.Compared with the combination of topography indices and vegetation indices, the addition of SAR indices effectively improves the prediction accuracy of the model. In general, the method of soil salinity prediction based on multi-source sensor combination is better than that based on a single sensor. In addition,SAR indices, vegetation indices, and topography indices are all effective variables for soil salinity prediction.Weighted Difference Vegetation Index(WDVI)is designated as the most important variable in these variables, followed by DEM.The results showed that the high-resolution radar Sentinel-1 and multispectral Sentinel-2 have the potential to develop soil salinity prediction model. 展开更多

Dust aerosols profoundly influence the radiative balance of the earth–atmosphere system and hence the global and regional climates. In this study, using multi-source satellite and ground-level observations combined with meteorological data,we investigated the three-dimensional evolution and transport characteristics of aerosols during a dust event that occurred in Xinjiang,China from 19 to 21 March 2019.Analysis of the meteorological data reveals that the dust air mass initially appeared in the northwest of Xinjiang and was subsequently transported to the Hami and Turpan areas due to the prevailing northwesterly winds, after which the direction of the airflow shifted due to topography, and the dust air masses were transported into southern Xinjiang. The air quality in the affected areas decreased rapidly, accompanied by a significant increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD),with the maximum value exceeding 3.5 in some areas. In addition, the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations(CALIPSO) data reveal that the aerosol particles in the dust-affected areas were mainly dust aerosols, with small amounts of pollutant dust aerosols.A reduction in the attenuated backscatter coefficient (β532||) was found with increasing altitude, with the dust aerosol pollution mainly distributed in the lower troposphere. The size of dust particles in the lower troposphere was relatively small and irregular. The depolarization ratio (PDR) values at altitudes of 8–10 km were relatively lower than those recorded in the lower troposphere, whereas the color ratio (CR)values were higher, which may have been influenced by the sparse vegetation coverage and poor subsurface conditions in Xinjiang, and attributable to the fact that regular large particles of dust are more likely to be dispersed to altitudes between 8 and 10 km within a short period of time.As a consequence of the meteorological conditions and topography, the dusting process in Xinjiang persisted for a relatively long period. These findings will contribute to enhanced understanding of the vertical distribution of aerosols in Northwest China. 展开更多
