Oxidative damage of primary cultured hippocampal neurons Does androgen have an antagonistic effect?

BACKGROUND： Evidence illustrates that androgen has a neuroprotective role. However, whether androgen also has the protective effect on hippocampal neurons during free radical mediated injury remains unclear. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the neuroprotective effect of androgen on hippocampal neurons during free radical damage. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A controlled in vitro experiment was performed at the Department of Human Anatomy, Cell Culture Lab, and Neuroendocrinology Lab, Basic Medical School, Hebei Medical University from February to June 2009. MATERIALS： Testosterone was provided by Tianjin Jinyao Amino Acid Company, China. METHODS： Primary cultured neurons from 24 Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into four groups： control, H202, testosterone, and testosterone （pre-added） plus H2O2 groups. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The positive cell ratio of microtubule associated protein-Ⅱ and neuron specific enolase was determined by immunocytochemistry. Neuronal morphology was observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and Nissl staining. Cell vitality and viability were determined using an inverted phase contrast microscope. The content of nitric oxide synthase, malondialdehyde, and superoxide dismutase were measured with a spectrophotometer. RESULTS： As compared with the control group, cell vitality and viability, and superoxide dismutase level were significantly decreased in the H202 group （P 〈 0.05）, while nitric oxide synthase and malondialdehyde levels were significantly increased （P 〈 0.05）. Neuronal vitality and viability as well as superoxide dismutase level in the testosterone plus H2O2 group were significantly greater than in the H2O2 group （P 〈 0.05）, and nitric oxide synthase and malondialdehyde levels were significantly less than in the H2O2 group （P〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Androgen partially reversed H2O2-induced neuronal damage and protected neurons.

The c-axis complex permittivity and electrical impedance in BaFe_2As_2: Experimental examination on transformation validity

Complex permittivity and electrical impedance have been measured along the c-axis in single crystals BaFe_2 As_2,which are the conductors known as the parent compound of 122-type iron superconductor. The resultant relative errors defined in the study indicate the existence of the transformation between complex permittivity and electrical impedance in the conductors, and these two physics quantities possibly reveal different aspects of the consistent superconductivityrelevant physics picture.

Investigation into PCB Routing Loss for Coupled Inductor Based VR (Voltage Regulator) Design in Server Computing System

Coupled inductor is one appealing technology to improve transient response and reduce output decoupling significantly in interleaved multi-phase voltage regulators (VRs). One well known problem is that coupled inductor winding structure causes PCB routing path longer than discrete inductor design. This paper investigates possible PCB routing schemes for coupled inductor and conducts a fair and quantitative comparison with discrete inductor in a server VR design. Simulation and measurement are also conducted to verify the analysis.

A multi-functional polymer film with high hydrophobicity and transparency was formed by simple casting of a polycarbonate solution onto a substrate having micro-scale roughness.The high hydrophobicity was heat-resistant,which can be retained up to 390 ℃.The polymer film may have potentially wide-ranging applications in industry and high technology.

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have recently demonstrated great potential as x-ray scintillators,yet they stll suffer toxicity issues,inferior light yield(LY)caused by severe self-absorption.Nontoxic bivalent europium ions(Eu^(2+))with intrinsically efficient and self-absorption-free d-f transition are a prospective replacement for the toxic Pb^(2+).Here,we demonstrated solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid halide BA_(10)Eul_(12)(BA denotes C_(4)H_(9)NH_(4)^(+))single crystals for the first time.
