Sleep apnea is a clinical condition characterized by cessation of breathing in the sleeper due to pharyngeal airway closure. The reduction in air exchange results in decreased cerebral blood circulation with consequential behavioral deficits cognitively and emotionally. Untreated sleep apnea is associated with chronic illnesses of depression, cardiovascular disorder, obesity and diabetes mellitus. Measured cognitive behavior before and following CPAP treatment demonstrates the cognitive deficit as the effectiveness of CPAP treatment. Emotional factors related to sleep apnea diagnosis and adherence to treatment are facilitated in patients with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) interventions by sleep specialists. This is a brief review paper that presents findings about cognition and emotional factors related to sleep apnea. This is a brief review paper. 展开更多

Young adult sleep quality is reported to be compromised in the literature with shortened sleep intervals, daytime napping, excessive daytime sleepiness and excessive wakeups. The description of young adult sleep quality commonly includes the rationale that the independent schedule of the young adults coupled with their preferred social schedule, work and academic schedules leaves the planning for sleep to last place. Despite mentation and memory reductions with sleep deprivation secondary to poor sleep quality documented in young adults, the poor sleep quality prevails. This study is focused on the elements of arousal during a young adult’s day that may predispose them to elevated activation and difficulty relaxing sufficiently to fall asleep. It was hypothesized that light exposure was elevated in young adults with poor sleep quality. Light exposure in terms of overhead bright lights in classrooms and laboratories of the academic environment, bright light in terms of video monitors/TVs/tablets/phone exposure is sufficiently stimulating to cause cognitive activation was light exposure. 展开更多

The college student population have abbreviated sleep due to social schedules and busy academic schedules. A measurement of sleep hygiene and knowledge about sleep in the college student population indicates that there are varying levels along with sleep knowledge. The objective of the study was to examine young adult sleep quality because of providing an educative intervention. A sleep class of one hour provided once a week for ten weeks was provided following the administration of a ten-item sleep survey. Following the sleep class, the sleep survey was read ministered. Measures of central tendency and non-parametric analysis of nominal data were conducted. The results indicated two of the five cohorts had statistically significant differences. Further, the measures of sleep quality differed, statistically, for two of the cohorts receiving the classroom instruction. This research finding indicates a continued need to educate college student populations about their sleep health. 展开更多

The case of a 62-year-old male illustrated the medical emergent need for treatment. Severe excessive daytime sleepiness, neurocognitive functioning symptoms were evident from his chronic untreated sleepiness. An all-night polysomnogram confirmed the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The implication of this case’s chronic untreated experience of OSA is discussed in terms of neurocognitive/brain structure laboratory findings. Results at intake, one and three months of this case’s sleep and cognitive functioning are reported. 展开更多

While possessing the knowledge of the value of sleep health, young adults often allow their social schedules to encroach upon sleep time. Since March of 2020, the prevalence of COVID-19 reached a rate where quarantine, shelter in place mandates were employed worldwide. The obvious public health necessity of this action, along with the uncertainty with increasing rates of COVID-19 is compounded by distribution issues related to the vaccine. This literature review presents the factors related to young adult sleep followed by psychological consequences of COVID-19 factors. Several studies identify the need to attend to not only the sleep quality needs of young adult sleep but also the increased number of reporting depressed mood. Suggestions for improvement of young adult sleep given the factors of quarantine and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic are provided. 展开更多
