Xiaojue Wang's Modernity with a Cold War Face: Reimagining the Nation inChinese Literature across the 1949 Divide succeeds in bridging a glaring gap in the field of modem Chinese literary studies, namely, the study of literary works produced during the 1940s and 1950s in Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Wang's book also contributes new and critical insights to discussions of Chinese literary modernity by examining both poetic narration and domestic and international politics in the region against the general backdrop of the Cold War. Wang's meticulous analyses of selected literary texts demonstrate the fallacy of Cold War binary rhetoric, which obscures much of the richness of literature produced during the period. 展开更多
