A mass-balanced Ecopath model presents a quantitative description of the trophic structure,fl ow of energy and trophic interaction among ecological groups of an ecosystem.The Ecopath with Ecosim(EwE)modeling program(V...A mass-balanced Ecopath model presents a quantitative description of the trophic structure,fl ow of energy and trophic interaction among ecological groups of an ecosystem.The Ecopath with Ecosim(EwE)modeling program(Version 6.5)was used to develop a preliminary trophic model for a tropical freshwater reservoir.The total fi sh biomass was 6.245 t/km 2 and the highest trophic level of the reservoir was 3.362(for snakehead).The ecosystem is phytoplankton based because primary producers originated 68%and detritus originated 32%of the total fl ow from lower trophic level.The gross effi ciency of the fi shery was 0.004,suggesting the ineffi ciency of the system.The positive eff ect of phytoplankton and detritus on most of the other groups were evident from mixed trophic analysis while moderately higher ecotrophic effi ciency(EE)of phytoplankton shows the ecosystem’s potential bottom-up control.The competition for the same resources among diff erent groups was also obvious.The ratio of primary production/respiration(1.969)suggests that the ecosystem is at the developing stage and utmost contemplation should be given to concerned human activities.The low value of relative ascendancy(30.13)and overhead(69.87)reveals the stability of the ecosystem and some degrees of maturity.It also predicts the presence of signifi cant strength in reserve of the system to withstand or overcome any perturbation.However,ecologically sustainable resource management plans should be implemented to ensure the sustainability of this reservoir resources.展开更多
Bangladesh is considered one of the most suitable regions for fisheries in the world,with the world's largest flooded wetland and the third largest aquatic biodiversity in Asia after China and India.This paper rev...Bangladesh is considered one of the most suitable regions for fisheries in the world,with the world's largest flooded wetland and the third largest aquatic biodiversity in Asia after China and India.This paper reviews the performance of fisheries in Bangladesh using data collected from the Bangladesh Department of Fisheries,and related un-published grey literatures.The findings within describe recent growth within Bangladeshi inland fisheries,primarily in the inland aquaculture sector(2014e2015).This increase in the aquaculture production has been made possible with the implementation of scientific and technological modernization.From 2000 and 2016,aquaculture production increased from 712,640 and 2,060,408 metric t,a much larger quantity than wild capture production(1.023 million t)in 2016.There has also been a recent increase in the value of fishery exports,with more than US$34.08 billion in 2010 rising to more than US$46.60 billion in 2015.However,fisheries production is well below production targets despite the large gains seen in the aquaculture sector.展开更多
The anadromous Hilsa shad(Tenualosa ilisha)fishery is the prime single species fishery of Bangladesh that driven by open access system which was selected for this study.Key purpose of this study was to assess the MSY(...The anadromous Hilsa shad(Tenualosa ilisha)fishery is the prime single species fishery of Bangladesh that driven by open access system which was selected for this study.Key purpose of this study was to assess the MSY(Maximum Sustainable Yield)in order to review the effectivity of the ongoing management policy of this fishery.For this reason,time series maritime or downstream catch-effort data of the Bay of Bengal were assembled from the Department of Fisheries,Bangladesh.MSY,CPUE and other population parameters were estimated through Surplus Production Models(SPMs)using computer software packages of CEDA,ASPIC and TropFishR.Assessed biological reference points of MSY from the best fitted CEDA package was 282,100 t(R^(2)=0.822)for the normal assumptions of the Schaefer and Pella-Tomlinson models.MSY values from the ASPIC packages(324,100 t and 263,500 t;for Fox and Schaefer model)and Schaefer model from TropFishR(345,486t)were larger than the catch in 2017(278,948 t).The values of F ratio(F/FMSY)for all SPMs were found less than 1 and B ratio(B/BMSY)were greater than 1 that clearly indicate the gradual upsurge of the Hilsa stock.Based on the above findings of BRPs,it also proves the effectivity of the current“Hilsa fishery management action plan”by the authorities.展开更多
