In this paper, a four-layered road structure containing a top-down crack is investigated by performing finite element analyses in ABAQUS. In this study, in addition to the vertical load of a vehicle wheel, the horizontal load as well as its position with respect to the crack is also considered in the analyses, and the crack tip parameters including stress intensity factors(SIFs) and T-stress are then calculated. Moreover, influence of elastic modulus and thickness of the pavement layers on the crack tip parameters is studied. Results show that the horizontal and vertical loads along with their position with respect to the crack, elastic modulus and thickness of the road layers influence the crack tip parameters(KⅠ, KⅡ and T-stress) significantly. It was also found that for the cases that the vehicle wheel is positioned near the crack plane, only the shear deformation mode is observed at the crack tip;while, for the vehicle wheel positions far from the crack, only the opening mode is observed, and between these positions, both the opening and shear deformation modes(i.e., mixed mode Ⅰ/Ⅱ) are observed at the crack tip. 展开更多

In this paper, crashworthiness performance of multi-cell conical tubes with new sectional configuration design(i.e.square,hexagonal,octagonal,decagon and circular)has been evaluated under axial and three different oblique loads. The same weight conical tubes were comparatively studied using an experimentally validated finite element model generated in LS-DYNA.Complex proportional assessment(COPRAS)method was then employed to select the most efficient tube using two conflicting criteria, namely peak collapse force(PCF)and energy absorption(EA).From the COPRAS calculations, the multi-cell conical tube with decagonal cross-section(MCDT)showed the best crashworthiness performance.Furthermore, the effects of possible number of inside ribs on the crashworthiness of the decagonal conical tubes were also evaluated, and the results displayed that the tubes performed better as the number of ribs increased. Finally, parameters(the cone angle,θ,and ratio of the internal tube size to the external one,S)of MCDT were optimized by adopting artificial neural networks(ANN)and genetic algorithm(GA)techniques.Based on the multi-objective optimization results, the optimum dimension parameters were found to beθ=7.9o,S=0.46 andθ=8o,S=0.74 from the minimum distance selection(MDS)and COPRAS methods, respectively. 展开更多

In this research, crashworthiness of polyurethane foam-filled tapered decagonal structures with different ratios of a/b=0,0.25,0.5,0.75 and 1 was evaluated under axial and oblique impacts. These new designed structures contained inner and outer tapered tubes, and four stiffening plates connected them together. The parameter a/b corresponds to the inner tube side length to the outer tube one.In addition, the space between the inner and outer tubes was filled with polyurethane foam. After validating the finite element model generated in LS-DYNA using the results of experimental tests, crashworthiness indicators of SEA(specific energy absorption)and Fmax(peak crushing force)were obtained for the studied structures.Based on the TOPSIS calculations, the semi-foam filled decagonal structure with the ratio of a/b=0.5 demonstrated the best crashworthiness capability among the studied ratios of a/b.Finally,optimum thicknesses(t1(thickness of the outer tube),t2(thickness of the inner tube),t3(thickness of the stiffening plates))of the selected decagonal structure were obtained by adopting RBF(radial basis function)neural network and genetic algorithm. 展开更多

Thin-walled tubes are increasingly used in automobile industries to improve structural safety. The present work deals with the collapse behavior of double-cell conical tubes subjected to dynamic axial and oblique loads.Crashworthiness of these tubes having different sections(e.g.,circular,square,hexagonal,octagonal,decagonal)was numerically investigated by using an experimentally validated finite element model generated in LS-DYNA.Geometry of these tubes was then optimized by decreasing the cross section dimensions at the distal end while the weight remained unchanged.Octagonal conical tube was finally found to be more preferable to the others as a collision energy absorber. In addition, square and circular tubes showed diamond deformation mode, while the other tubes collapsed in concertina mode.A decision making method called TOPSIS was finally implemented on the numerical results to select the most efficient energy absorber. 展开更多
