BACKGROUND Research on celiac disease(CD)in northwest China is still in its infancy.At present,large-sample data on the epidemiological,clinical,and pathological characteristics of CD are limited.AIM To investigate th...BACKGROUND Research on celiac disease(CD)in northwest China is still in its infancy.At present,large-sample data on the epidemiological,clinical,and pathological characteristics of CD are limited.AIM To investigate the epidemiological,clinical,and pathological characteristics of CD in northwest China.METHODS The clinical data of 2884 patients with gastrointestinal(GI)symptoms were retrospectively analyzed.Total immunoglobulin A(IgA)and anti-tissue transglutaminase(tTG)IgA levels were examined in all patients.Gastroscopy and colonoscopy were performed in patients with positive anti-tTG IgA and deficient total IgA levels.Atrophy of the duodenal and ileal villi was examined and histopathological examinations were performed.The modified Marsh–Oberhuber classification system was used to grade villous atrophy in the duodenum or distal ileum.The patients’Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection status was compared in terms of clinical presentation and Marsh grade.Statistical analyses were performed using the t-test or chi-square test.RESULTS Among the 2884 patients,73 were positive for serum anti-tTG IgA,and 50 were diagnosed with CD.The CD detection rate was significantly higher in Kazakhs(4.39%)than in Uyghurs(2.19%),Huis(0.71%),and Hans(0.55%).The main symptoms of CD were chronic diarrhea,anorexia,anemia,fatigue,weight loss,sleep disorders,osteopenia,and osteoporosis.The body mass index of patients with CD was significantly lower than that of patients without CD.A total of 69 patients with positive serum anti-tTG IgA and two patients with deficient total IgA levels underwent GI endoscopy.Endoscopy revealed crypt hyperplasia and/or duodenal villous atrophy,mainly manifested as nodular mucosal atrophy,grooves,and fissures.The difference in H.pylori infection rates was not statistically significant between CD and non-CD patients but was significantly different among CD patients with different Marsh grades.CONCLUSION Among the patients with GI symptoms in northwestern China,the prevalence of CD was more in the Uyghur and Kazakh populations.H.pylori infection may be associated with CD severity.展开更多

Recognizing the risk of fluvial bank erosion is an important challenge to ensure the early warning and prevention or control of bank collapse in river catchments,including in the Yangtze River.This study introduces a ...Recognizing the risk of fluvial bank erosion is an important challenge to ensure the early warning and prevention or control of bank collapse in river catchments,including in the Yangtze River.This study introduces a geomorphons-based algorithm to extract river bank erosion information by adjusting the flatness from multibeam echo-sounding data.The algorithm maps ten subaqueous morphological elements,including the slope,footslope,flat,ridge,peak,valley,pit,spur,hollow,and shoulder.Twentyone flatness values were used to build an interpretation strategy for the subaqueous features of riverbank erosion.The results show that the bank scarp,which is the erosion carrier,is covered by slope cells when the flatness is 10°.The scour pits and bank scars are indicated by pit cells near the bank and hollow cells in the bank slope at a flatness of 0°.Fluvial subaqueous dunes are considered an important factor accelerating bank erosion,particularly those near the bank toe;the critical flatness of the dunes was evaluated as 3°.The distribution of subaqueous morphological elements was analyzed and used to map the bank erosion inventory.The analysis results revealed that the near-bank zone,with a relatively large water depth,is prone to form large scour pits and a long bank scarp.Arc collapse tends to occur at the long bank scarp to shorten its length.The varied assignment of flatness values among terrestrial,marine,and fluvial environments is discussed,concluding that diversified flatness values significantly enable fluvial subaqueous morphology recognition.Consequently,this study provides a reference for the flatness-based recognition of fluvial morphological elements and enhances the targeting of subaqueous signs and risks of bank failure with a range of multibeam bathymetric data.展开更多

This study aimed to explore the mechanism of OSA by assessing the association between the human tandem of P domains in a weak inwardly rectifying K^+ channel (TWIK)-related acid-sensitive K^+ channel-1 (TASK-1) gene and OSA. Methods: A total of 164 patients with severe OSA and 171 patients without OSA were recruited from the Center for Hypertension of People’s Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (China) from April to December in 2016. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs1275988 and rs2586886) in the TASK-1 gene were selected and genotyped using a kompetitive allele specific polymerase chain reaction genotyping system. Clinical-pathological characteristics and genotype data were compared between the severe and non-OSA groups to explore the association between TASK-1 gene polymorphism and severe OSA. Results: There were no significant differences in genotype distribution, allele frequency, and the recessive and dominant model of the two selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs1275988 and rs2586886) between the severe and non-OSA groups in the total population (P < 0.05). However, for patients with a body mass index (BMI)≥28 kg/m2, the distribution of genotypes and alleles, and the recessive model (GG + GA vs. AA) exhibited significant differences between the severe and non-OSA group (for genotypes: P = 0.014 and P = 0.026;for alleles: P = 0.006 and P = 0.011;for the recessive model: P = 0.005 and P = 0.009, respectively). The simple logistic regression analysis revealed that the GG genotype was a risk factor for OSA. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were 4.902 (1.582–15.186, P = 0.006) for rs1275988 and 4.420 (1.422–13.734, P = 0.010) for rs2586886, respectively. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the combination of GG genotypes of rs1275988 with BMI ≥28 kg/m^2 increased the risk of severe OSA (OR = 8.916, 95% CI 4.506–17.645, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Both the GG genotype of rs1275988 and GG genotype of rs2586886 in the TASK-1 gene may play as potential risk factors in obese patients with OSA.展开更多
Phenols have been shown to influence the cellular proliferation and function of thyroid in experimental models. However, few human studies have investigated the association between phenol exposure and thyroid cancer, ...Phenols have been shown to influence the cellular proliferation and function of thyroid in experimental models. However, few human studies have investigated the association between phenol exposure and thyroid cancer, and the underlying mechanisms are also poorly understood. We conducted a case-control study by age- and sex-matching 143 thyroid cancer and 224 controls to investigate the associations between phenol exposures and the risk of thyroid cancer, and further to explore the mediating role of oxidative stress. We found that elevated urinary triclosan (TCS), bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) levels were associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer (all P for trends < 0.05), and the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) comparing the extreme exposure groups were 3.52 (95% confidence interval (CI):2.08, 5.95), 2.06 (95% CI: 1.06, 3.97) and 7.15 (95% CI: 3.12, 16.40), respectively. Positive associations were also observed between urinary TCS, BPA and BPS and three oxidative stress biomarkers measured by 8-hydroxy-2 -deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 8-iso-prostaglandin F(8-iso PGF) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal-mercapturic acid (HNE-MA), as well as between urinary 8-iso PGFand HNE-MA and the risk of thyroid cancer. Mediation analysis showed that urinary 8-iso PGFmediated 28.95%, 47.06% and 31.08% of the associations between TCS, BPA and BPS exposures and the risk of thyroid cancer, respectively (all P < 0.05). Our results suggest that exposure to TCS, BPA and BPS may be associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer and lipid peroxidation may be an intermediate mechanism. Further studies are warranted to confirm the findings.展开更多
