Polylactide(PLA)bead foams show a high potential regarding their applicability in packaging or consumer products.Concerning the comparable properties of PLA to Polystyrene(PS)and the good CO_(2) footprint it represents a potential alternative to petroleum-based polymer foams. However, foaming of PLA is challenging, due to its low melt strength, therefore chemical modifiers are often used.Concerning the bead foam technology regarding PLA,the available literature is limited so far.Within this study, the bead foaming behavior of neat and modified amorphous PLA was investigated. The material was modified by talc and an epoxy-based chain extender. These compounds have been investigated regarding their sorption behavior in CO_(2) atmosphere and their foaming behavior.Foaming was conducted by using the batch foaming method based on a rapid temperature increase after saturation with CO_(2).In order to achieve welded bead foams,a one-step processing for foaming and welding has been established. Finally, the compression properties of the PLA bead foams have been investigated.Densities below 50 kg/m^(3) for single bead foams and 80 kg/m^(3) for molded foams were achieved, respectively. 展开更多

A well-received conception of sustainability was formulated by the United Nations’Brundtland Commission in 1987 as a process of change in which exploitation of resources, direction of investments, orientation of technical development, and institutional transformation are all in harmony and enhance both current and future potential to meet human needs and aspirations.Though raised a long time back, fostering a balanced development for the human race to meet the demands of the present without compromising the ability of future generations is still a tremendous challenge.Especially with the world energy needs growth rate outstripping that of population growth,a discouraging situation has been installed that points toward quick depletion of available resources. Moreover, the rapid urbanization shift in developing countries hungering for energy to emulate the level reached in developed countries to bolster rapid urban development further accelerates world energy consumption. The situation is exacerbated today, and approximately 80%of the world’s energy is driven from fossil fuels regarded as the primary culprit for air pollution and greenhouse gases. This poses grievous threats not only to the health of human race causing rising hospital admission rates, chronic respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases, but also to the environment alike. 展开更多
