Electrical contact materials are generally Ag-or Cu-based composites and play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of electrical equipments and electronic instruments. The MAX(M is an early transition metal,A is an element from III or IV main groups, and X is carbon or/and nitrogen)phase ceramics display a unique combination of properties and may serve as an ideal reinforcement phase for electrical contact materials. The biological materials evolved in nature generally exhibit three-dimensional(3D)interpenetrating-phase architectures, which may offer useful inspiration for the architectural design of electrical contact materials. Here,a series of bi-continuous Ag-Ti_(3)SiC_(2) MAX phase composites with high ceramic contents exceeding 50 vol.%and having micron-and ultrafine-scaled 3D interpenetrating-phase architectures, wherein both constituents were continuous and mutually interspersed, were exploited by pressureless infiltration of Ag melt into partially sintered Ti_(3)SiC_(2) scaffolds. The mechanical and electrical properties as well as the friction and wear performance of the composites were investigated and revealed to be closely dependent on the ceramic contents and characteristic structural dimensions. The composites exhibited a good combination of properties with high hardness over 2.3 GPa,high flexural strength exceeding 530 MPa,decent fracture toughness over 10 MPa·m^(1/2),and good wear resistance with low wear rate at an order of 10^(-5)mm^(3)/(N·m),which were much superior compared to the counterparts made by powder metallurgy methods. In particular, the hardness, electrical conductivity, strength, and fracture toughness of the composites demonstrated a simultaneous improvement as the structure was refined from micron-to ultrafine-scales at equivalent ceramic contents. The good combination of properties along with the facile processing route makes the Ag-Ti_(3)SiC_(2)3D interpenetrating-phase composites appealing for electrical contact applications. 展开更多

In aero-engines, abrasive coatings are typically utilized to protect the blade tip from excessive wear caused by the harder abradable sealing coating and thereby improve the sealing performance of engines. Therefore, a Ni/cBN abrasive coating was prepared on titanium alloy using electrodeposition. The high-speed rubbing tests with a linear velocity of 350 m/s and different incursion rates were performed to investigate the effect of the Ni/cBN abrasive coating on the wear behavior against NiCrAl/diatomite seal coating. Results showed that melting wear and adhesive transfer occurred on the bare blades, causing the bare blade to suffer excessive wear. While the Ni/cBN abrasive coating exhibited superior wear resistance and cutting performance. The cBN grits pullout, the abrasion of Ni matrix and transfer of seal coating to the cBN grits were the main wear mechanism of the Ni/cBN abrasive coating. Additionally, it was found that the relationship between the incursion rate and high-speed rubbing behavior is quite different for the bare blade and Ni/cBN coating. The reason for the difference in wear behavior of bare blade and Ni/cBN coating at different incursion rates was discussed in detail. 展开更多

A major ... The influences of primary carbide size and type on the sliding wear behavior and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) properties of M50 bearing steel were systematically investigated under oil lubrication condition. A major breakthrough was achieved in the influence of primary carbide on tribological behavior. The opposite effect brought by primary carbide size on the sliding wear resistance and RCF life of M50 bearing steel was determined. Wear resistance increased with an increase in the studied primary carbide size, whereas RCF life decreased significantly. Compared with the 0 R and R positions with a relatively small carbide size, the wear volume of the 1/2 R position with a large carbide size was the smallest. Compared with the 0 R and R positions, the L10 life of the 1/2 R position decreased by 82.7% and 84.8%, respectively. On the basis of the statistical correlation between primary carbide size and the two tribological properties, a critical maximum carbide size of 5-10 μm was proposed to achieve optimal tribological performance. This research suggests that the equivalent diameter of the primary carbide should be controlled to be smaller than 10 μm, but further decreasing primary carbide size to less than 5 μm is unnecessary. The influence of primary carbide type in M50 bearing steel on sliding wear resistance was also discussed. Results indicate that the MC-type carbides with higher elastic modulus and microhardness exhibit better wear resistance than the M2C-type carbides. 展开更多
