Laser speckle contrast imaging(LSCI)is an optical imaging method,which can monitor microvascularflow variation directly without addition of any ectogenous dye.All the existing laser speckle contrast analysis(LASCA)methods are a combination of spatial and temporal statistics.In this study,we have proposed a new method,Gaussian kernel laser speckle contrast analysis(gLASCA),which processes the raw images primarily with the Gaussian kernel operator along the spatial direction of bloodflow.We explored the properties of gLASCA in the simulation and animal cerebral ischemia perfusion model.Compared with the other existing speckle processing methods based on spatial,temporal,spatial-temporal or anisotropic linear structure;the present gLASCA method has a high spatial-temporal resolution to respond the change of velocity especially in microvasculature.Besides,the gLASCA method obtains approximately 10.2%and 7.1%higher contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR)over the anisotropic linear method(aLASCA)in the simulation and experiment models.For these advantages,gLASCA could be a better method for local microvascular laser speckle imaging in terms of cerebral ischemia reperfusion,spreading depression and brain injury diseases. 展开更多

Interface properties and failures of REBCO coated conductor tapes:Research progress and challenges

RE‐Ba‐Cu‐O(REBCO,where RE=Y,Gd,Sm,and other rare earth elements)coated conductor(CC)tapes are promising for applications in high‐energy physics and high‐field science owing to their significant advantages such as high critical magnetic field,high current density,and the ability to achieve superconductivity at liquid nitrogen temperatures.Nevertheless,the mechanical and superconducting performances of these CC tapes are significantly affected by interface failures,such as interfacial delamination and coating fractures,which arise from the complex interplay of mechanical stress induced by magnet processing,thermal mismatch stress during cooling,electromagnetic stress under high magnetic fields,and thermal stress during quenching.This study comprehensively reviews the interface properties and failure behavior of REBCO CC tapes.First,the research progress in characterizing the intricate interface properties of REBCO CC is systematically reviewed.Furthermore,the interface failure behavior in extreme multifield environments was analyzed and summarized.Subsequently,this study outlines optimization strategies to mitigate interface failure risks in REBCO superconducting magnet structures.Finally,we address the current challenges and future perspectives on interface issues in REBCO CC tapes.By addressing these challenges,this study offers valuable insights for advancing the development and practical implementation of superconducting technologies in diverse applications. 展开更多

Dear Editor,Chibanian(Middle Pleistocene)hominin fossils that could not be easily assigned to Homo erectus,H.neanderthalensis,or H.sapiens have traditionally been as-signed to an alinclusive group:"archaic H.sapiens."In an insightful observation of the Chibanian record almost four decades ago however,Tattersall railed against the use of the word"archaic"in this sense when referring to the human fossil record,as he justifiably noted that no other biological organism has the word"archaic"attached to it'For example,no one refers to an earlier version of Canis domesticus as"archaic"C.domesticus.The ancestor of the domestic dog is,and always has been,considered to be C.lupus.In Tattersall's opinion,it would seem that these"archaic H.sapiens"fossils should be assigned to one or more formal taxonomic names.As such,terms such as"archaic H.sapiens,""mid-Pleistocene Homo,"and"Middle Pleistocene Homo"have al-ways been considered to be wastebasket taxa that include way too much morphological variabilty for one proposed taxonomic group.Continuing to use wastebasket taxa only hinders any attempts to understand true phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships. 展开更多
