Objective: The aim of the study was to detect the levels of mannose-binding lectin (MBL), MBL-associated serine protease 2 (MASP-2) and explore the clinical significances of them in patients with primary thyroid ...Objective: The aim of the study was to detect the levels of mannose-binding lectin (MBL), MBL-associated serine protease 2 (MASP-2) and explore the clinical significances of them in patients with primary thyroid neoplasms. Methods: By using ELISA method, we detected the serum levels of MBL and MASP-2 in 26 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), 30 patients with thyroid adenoma (TA) and 26 healthy people, respectively. Results: Serum MBL level was (565.23 ± 76.70) μg/L in PTCs higher than (324.267 ±24.74) μg/L in TAs, and (152.69± 16.95) IJg/L in healthy of controlling group. There was statistical significance between PTC and TA (P 〈 0.05), however there was no difference between TA and healthy (P 〉 0.05). Serum MASP-2 level was (726.153± 78.88) pg/L in PTCs higher than (379.266 ± 30.26) μg/L in TAs, and (203.846 ± 29.09) μg/L in healthy. Serum MASP-2 level was higher in PTCs than TAs, and the difference had statistical significance (P 〈 0.01). But no difference was observed between in TAs and healthy. Conclusion: These findings might reflect inflammatory processes induced by defense mechanisms, in response to the development of the turnout. MBL may also be involved in the elimination of possible tumourigenic pathogens.展开更多
In this study, we, for the first time, tried to apply IC50 values (inhibitory concentration estimated to affect the endpoint in question by 50%) in the MTT colorimetric assay to investigate the cytotoxic effects of hi...In this study, we, for the first time, tried to apply IC50 values (inhibitory concentration estimated to affect the endpoint in question by 50%) in the MTT colorimetric assay to investigate the cytotoxic effects of highly absorbent foam dressings based on silver zirconium phosphate, a newly nano-based matrix. Our results showed that silver released from dressings based on silver zirconium phosphate attributed mainly to highly cytotoxic to L929 cells cultured with MEM containing 10% fetal bovine serum. In addition, we have also compared the IC<sub>50</sub> values among different dilutions of AgNO<sub>3</sub> solution, silver based dressing extracts and material reference control (ZDEC) extracts using the optimized MTT assay, along with characterizing the silver content in the dressing extracts using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results have shown that the IC<sub>50</sub> values of AgNO<sub>50</sub> solution, silver based dressing extracts and ZDEC extracts are 3.5 μg/mL, 3.8 μg/mL and 8.4%, respectively. And there exist some good agreements between qualitative and quantitative evaluation method as well. In conclusion, our study has led to the view that the IC<sub>50</sub> value is a promising quantitative index for screening cytotoxicity with regard to silver based dressings.展开更多
External organic carbon sources are needed to provide electron donors for the denitrification of wastewater with a low COD/NO_(3)^(-)-N(C/N)ratio,increasing the treatment cost.The economic strategy is to enhance the b...External organic carbon sources are needed to provide electron donors for the denitrification of wastewater with a low COD/NO_(3)^(-)-N(C/N)ratio,increasing the treatment cost.The economic strategy is to enhance the bioactivity and/or biodiversity of denitrifiers to efficiently utilize organic substances in wastewater.In this study,novel zero-valent iron(ZVI)composite carriers were prepared and implemented in a suspended carrier biofilm reactor to enhance the bioactivity and/or biodiversity of denitrifiers.At the influent C/N ratio of 4(COD was 179.5±5.0 mg/L and TN was 44.2±0.8 mg/L),COD and TN removal efficiencies were 85.1%and 66.4%,respectively,in the reactors filled with 3 wt%ZVI composite carriers.In contrast,COD and TN removal efficiencies were 70.4%and 55.3%,respectively,in the reactor filled with conventional high-density polyethylene(HDPE)biofilm carriers.The biofilm formation on the 3 wt%ZVI composite carriers was optimized due to its higher roughness(surface square roughness increased from 76.0 nm to 93.8 nm)and favorable hydrophilicity(water contact angle dropped to 72.5°±1.4°from 94.3°±3.2°)compared with the HDPE biofilm carriers.In addition,heterotrophic denitrifiers,Thauera and Dechloromonas,were enriched,whereas autotrophic denitrifiers,Raoultella and Thiobacillus,exhibited high relative abundance in the biofilm of ZVI composite carriers.The coexistence of heterotrophic denitrifiers and autotrophic denitrifiers on the surface of ZVI composite carriers provided mixotrophic metabolism of denitrification(including heterotrophic and iron-based autotrophic),thereby ensuring effective denitrification for wastewater with a low C/N ratio without external organic carbon source addition.展开更多
Degradable biomaterials have emerged as a promising type of medical materials because of their unique advantages of biocompatibility,biodegradability and biosafety.Owing to their bioabsorbable and biocompatible proper...Degradable biomaterials have emerged as a promising type of medical materials because of their unique advantages of biocompatibility,biodegradability and biosafety.Owing to their bioabsorbable and biocompatible properties,magnesium-based biomaterials are considered as ideal degradable medical implants.However,the rapid corrosion of magnesium-based materials not only limits their clinical application but also necessitates a more specific biological evaluation system and biosafety standard.In this study,extracts of pure Mg and its calcium alloy were prepared using different media based on ISO 10993:12;the Mg^2+ concentration and osmolality of each extract were measured.The biocompatibility was investigated using the MTT assay and xCELLigence real-time cell analysis(RTCA).Cytotoxicity tests were conducted with L929,MG-63 and human umbilical vein endothelial cell lines.The results of the RTCA highly matched with those of the MTT assay and revealed the different dynamic modes of the cytotoxic process,which are related to the differences in the tested cell lines,Mg-based materials and dilution rates of extracts.This study provides an insight on the biocompatibility of biodegradable materials from the perspective of cytotoxic dynamics and suggests the applicability of RTCA for the cytotoxic evaluation of degradable biomaterials.展开更多
Systemic toxicity caused by repeated exposure to both polar and nonpolar leachables of di(2-ethylhexyl)-1,2-cyclohexane plasticized polyvinyl chloride(PVC)was evaluated with dual routes of parenteral administration me...Systemic toxicity caused by repeated exposure to both polar and nonpolar leachables of di(2-ethylhexyl)-1,2-cyclohexane plasticized polyvinyl chloride(PVC)was evaluated with dual routes of parenteral administration method on rats in the study.Experimental group and control group were designed by researchers.Tail intravenous injection with 0.9%sodium chloride injection extracts and intraperitoneal injection with corn oil extracts were conducted to the experimental rats while tail intravenous injection with 0.9%sodium chloride Injection and intraperitoneal injection with corn oil were conducted to the control rats.After 14 days,blood specimens were collected for clinical pathology(hematology and clinical chemistry)analysis.Selected organs were weighed and a histopathological examination was conducted.As a result,compared with the control animals,there were no toxicity-related changes on the parameters above.The results show that the rats do not show obvious systemic toxicity reaction caused by repeated exposure with dual routes of parenteral administration method on rats after administration with both polar and nonpolar exacts of di(2-ethylhexyl)-1,2-cyclohexane plasticized PVC simultaneously up for 14 days.展开更多
