The impacts of nighttime post-anthesis warming on rice productivity and grain quality in East China were evaluated for two cultivars, II You 128, an indica rice, and Wuyunjing 7, a japonica rice. Warming by 3.0 °C stimulated the nighttime respiration rate and decreased the photosynthesis rate, resulting in significant decreases of 21.2% and 24.9% in aboveground biomass accumulation for II You 128 and Wuyunjing 7, respectively. Warming significantly reduced the rates of seed setting and grain filling, especially of inferior kernels(those lower in panicles), while the filling rate of superior kernels remained almost unchanged. As a result, 1000-grain weight and grain yield were respectively 3.7% and 30.0% lower for II You 128 and 12.8% and 34.3% for Wuyunjing 7 in warmed plots than in the unwarmed control. Nighttime warming also significantly reduced the grain milling and appearance quality of both varieties. More negative effects of warming on inferior than on superior kernels were found. The above results have important implications for rice variety cultivation in East China. 展开更多

Heilongjiang Province is the main soybean-producing area in china. In this study, we analyzed the canopy structure, dynamic characteristics of light radiation and yield of Hefeng50 (the main variety of soybean in Heilongjiang Province) under six different cultivation patterns (ORP, TPCR, ORCP, BRHD, SRHD and FPHD). The results showed that SRHD and BRHD at different growth period (blossom period R1, podding R3 and grain filing period R5) produced an even distribution of the population leaf area, suitable mean foliage inclination angle (MFIA), low transparency coefficients for defuse penetration (TCDP) and transparency coefficients for radiation penetration (TCRP), high leaf area index (LAI), extinction light coefficient (K value), fraction of radiation intercepted (FRI) and light energy utilization rate. Grain number, dry matter weight per plant, and yield of SRHD and BRHD were significantly higher than those of other cultivation patterns. The yield of SRHD, BRHD, ORCP, FPHD and TPCR was increased by 136%, 112%, 79%, 50.1% and 14.7%, respectively, compared to that of ORP. These results suggest that SRHD and BRHD are the optimal cultivation pattern for the improvement of soybean yield in phaeozem region of northeastern China. 展开更多

Water regime and nitrogen(N) fertilizer are two important factors impacting greenhouse gases(GHG) emission from paddy field, whereas their effects have not been well studied in cold region. In this study, we conducted a two-year field experiment to study the impacts of water regime and N fertilizer on rice yields and GHG emissions in Harbin, China, a cold region located in high latitudes. Our results showed that intermittent irrigation significantly decreased methane(CH4) emission compared with continuous flooding, however, the decrement was far lower than the global average level. The N2O emissions were very small when flooded but peaked at the beginning of the disappearance of floodwater. The N fertilizer treatments increased CH4 emissions at low level(75 kg N/ha). But both CH4 and N2O emissions were uninfluenced at the levels of 150 kg N/ha and 225 kg N/ha. Rice yields increased under intermittent irrigation and were highest at the level of 150 kg N/ha. From our results, we recommended that the intermittent irrigation and 150 kg N/ha as the ideal water regime-nitrogen fertilizer incorporation for this area to achieve low GHG emissions without impacting rice yields. 展开更多
