AIM:To investigate the impacts of angiotensin II(Ang II)on retinal artery changes in apolipoprotein E deficient(apoE^(-/-))mice.METHODS:ApoE^(-/-)male mice were infused by minipumps with Ang II at 1000 ng/kg·min(Ang II group)or saline(control group)for 28d.They were underwent ophthalmic fundus examination on day 0,14,and 28 of infusion.Histopathologic examination, ribonucleic acid(RNA)sequencing and local Ang II measurement of retinas were conducted.RESULTS:Ophthalmic fundus examination showed Ang II infusion promoted the formation of retinal arterial aneurysm-like lesions on day 28.Optical coherence tomography revealed the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer(GCIPL)thickness in the control group was significantly thinner than that in Ang II group(P<0.001).Hematoxylin-eosin staining demonstrated diffused swelling of GCIPL layer and its disordered structure in Ang II group.Transmission electron microscopy showed Ang II infusion caused aggravation of atherosclerotic lesions, including increased swelling, roughness, disorganization of the retinal vasculature, and vacuoles formation.RNA-sequencing and gene ontology enrichment analysis demonstrated that the structure and function of cellular membrane might be disturbed and visual function might be compromised by Ang II.The local level of Ang II was higher in Ang II infusion group but did not show significant differences compared to the control group(P=0.086).CONCLUSION:Ang II infusion promotes the formation of retinal arterial aneurysm-like lesions in apoE^(-/-)mice,causing aggravation of atherosclerotic lesions, more severe disorganization of the retinal vasculature and disturbance of the cellular membrane. 展开更多

N-doped carbons were fabricated from zeolite-templated carbon via modification with melamine and mild KOH activation. The N-doping treatment and KOH activation slightly lowered the surface areas of pristine zeolite-templated carbon; nonetheless, N-doped carbons with a lower surface area exhibited much higher capacitance and cycling stability as fabricated into symmetric supercapacitor. Significantly, N-doped carbon obtained at 700°C showed a capacitance of 45.7 F/g at 0.1 A/g and 42.0 F/g at 10 A/g for the fabricated supercapacitor with 6 M KOH electrolyte, with 92% retention of initial capacitance as current density increased up to 100-fold. This performance was attributed to the dual contribution of electric double-layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance. The assembled supercapacitor also exhibited excellent cycling stability, with 91% capacitance retention at 10 A/g after 10000 cycles. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Apnea caused by retrobulbar anesthesia is a very rare but severe complication during ophthalmic surgery.CASE SUMMARY We report a rare case of apnea caused by retrobulbar anesthesia, and emergency resuscitation was used.A 74-year-old female patient was diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the right eye and planned to undergo vitrectomy under retrobulbar anesthesia. After the retrobulbar anesthesia in her right eye,she became unconscious and apneic. It was suggested that she had developed brainstem anesthesia.Assisted ventilation was initiated.Atropine 0.5 mg,epinephrine 1 mg,ephedrine 30 mg,and lipid emulsion were given.Five minutes later, her consciousness and breathing gradually returned, but with uncertain light perception in her right eye.Alprostadil 20μg was given, and after 2 h her visual acuity resumed to the preoperative level.CONCLUSION Brainstem anesthesia is a serious complication secondary to retrobulbar anesthesia.Medical staff should pay attention to the identification of brainstem anesthesia and be familiar with the emergency treatment for this complication. 展开更多

AIM:To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery(NPGS)plus phacoemulsification(Phaco-NPGS)and NPGS-alone.METHODS:We systematically searched various databases and reviewed studies that had evaluated the effects of Phaco-NPGS or NPGS-alone for patients with glaucoma.Primary outcomes included postoperative intraocular pressure(IOP)and the number of postoperative antiglaucoma medications.Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of complications, incidence of needling or goniopuncture, and surgical success rate.RESULTS:In total,380 and 424 eyes in NPGS-alone and Phaco-NPGS groups respectively were included. Both postoperative IOP and number of medications were significantly lowered in the Phaco-NPGS group than that in the NPDS-alone group[weighted mean difference(WMD)=-1.12,95%confidence interval(CI):-2.11 to-0.12,P=0.03;WMD=-0.31,95%CI:-0.53 to-0.09,P=0.006].Moreover,Phaco-NPGS had a significantly lower prevalence of complications and postoperative procedures compared to NPGS-alone,while no significant difference existed for surgical success.CONCLUSION:Phaco-NPGS superior to NPGS-alone in the reduction of IOP and medications.Phaco-NPGS can be recommended for glaucoma patients with coexisting cataracts owing to its superior efficacy, fewer complications, and postoperative procedures. 展开更多
