About 2 percent of red clump stars are found to be the lithium-rich and thus the surface lithium increases obviously in some red clump stars.The physical mechanism of the lithium enrichment in these stars has not yet been explained satisfactorily by the evolutionary models of single stars.The flash induced internal gravity wave mixing(i.e.,IGW)could play a primary role in explaining the red clump star with lithium enrichment and it has a very significant impact on the internal structure and surface compositions of a star.Rotation can significantly increase the mixing efficiency of the internal gravity wave because the timescale for the enrichment event has been enlarged.Thermohaline mixing can explain the observed behavior of lithium on red giant stars that are more luminosity than the RGB bump.However,it has a very small effect on the diffusion of elements because its diffusion coefficient is much smaller than the one of IGW induced mixing after the core helium flash. 展开更多

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic mechanisms of a breast lump resolution detergent in a rat model of breast hyperplasia. Methods: A rat model of breast hyperplasia was established using injections of estradiol benzoate combined with progesterone. The effects of the breast lump resolution detergent on nipple height and diameter in the rat model were observed, along with its impact on serum levels of estradiol (E2), prolactin (PRL), and progesterone (P). Additionally, the study examined the morphological changes in breast tissue. The impact of the breast nodule detergent on blood rheology parameters was also observed. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effect of the breast nodule detergent was assessed using the cotton ball granuloma experiment, and the analgesic effect was observed using the writhing test. Results: The breast lump resolution detergent reduced nipple height and diameter in the rat model, decreased serum levels of E2, PRL, and P, and alleviated pathological changes in breast tissue. It also lowered hemorheological parameters including whole blood high, medium, and low shear viscosity, plasma viscosity, red blood cell hematocrit, red blood cell aggregation index, red blood cell deformability index, red blood cell electrophoresis time, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in the acute “blood stasis” rat model. The detergent reduced the weight of cotton ball granulomas in mice and decreased the number of writhing episodes caused by acetic acid. Conclusion: The breast lump resolution detergent demonstrates favorable therapeutic effects in treating breast hyperplasia, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, exerting anti-inflammatory properties, and providing analgesic effects. The downregulation of serum E2 and PRL levels and the upregulation of P levels may be critical mechanisms underlying its efficacy. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Nocturnal hypertension is reported as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.This study aimed to explore the potential association between nocturnal hypertension and heart failure(HF)rehospitalization in patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction(HFpEF).METHODS A total of 538 patients with HFpEF from May 2018 to December 2021 were consequently recruited in this study and followed up until they were readmitted for HF or the end of this study.Cox regression analysis was used to reveal the potential association between nighttime blood pressure(BP)levels,nocturnal hypertension and nocturnal BP patterns and HF rehospitalization.Kaplan-Meier curve was used to assess the cumulative event-free survival rate between groups.RESULTS There were 537 patients with HFpEF were included in the final analysis.The mean age of the study population was 77.14±8.68 years,and 41.2% of patients were men.After a median follow-up duration of 10.93(4.19–21.13)months,176 patients(32.7%)with HFpEF were readmitted for HF.Cox regression analysis had revealed that nighttime systolic BP level[hazards ratio(HR)=1.018,95%CI:1.008–1.028,P=0.001],nighttime diastolic BP level(HR=1.024,95%CI:1.007–1.042,P=0.007),nocturnal hypertension(HR=1.688,95%CI:1.229–2.317,P=0.001)were associated with HF rehospitalization.Kaplan-Meier analysis had demonstrated that patients with nocturnal hypertension had significantly lower event-free survival rate(log-rank P<0.001).Furthermore,patients with a riser pattern had a higher risk of HF rehospitalization(HR=1.828,95%CI:1.055–3.166,P=0.031)and lower eventfree survival rate(log-rank P=0.003)than those with a dipper pattern.These findings were also confirmed in patients with HFpEF and hyperuricemia.CONCLUSIONS Nighttime BP levels,nocturnal hypertension and a riser pattern are independently associated with HF rehospitalization in patients with HFpEF,and prominently in patients with HFpEF and hyperuricemia.Well controlled nighttime BP levels should be emphasized and considered in patients with HFpEF. 展开更多

The high-molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) pyrene and typical long chain alkane nhexadecane are both difficult to degrade. In this study, n-hexadecane and pyrene degrading strain Rhodococcus sp. T1 was isolated from oil contaminated soil. Strain T1 could remove 90.81% n-hexadecane(2 vol%) and 42.79% pyrene(200 mg·L^(-1)) as a single carbon within 5 days, respectively. Comparatively, the degradation of pyrene increased to 60.63%, but the degradation of n-hexadecane decreased to 87.55% when these compounds were mixed. Additionally, identification and analysis of degradation metabolites of Rhodococcus sp. T1 in the above experiments showed that there were significant changes in alanine, methylamine, citric acid and heptadecanoic acid between sole and dual substrate degradation. The optimal conditions for degradation were then determined based on analysis of the pH, salinity, additional nutrient sources and liquid surface activity.Under the optimal conditions of pH 7.0, 35 °C, 0.5% NaCl, 5 mg·L^(-1) of yeast extract and 90 mg·L^(-1) of surfactant,the degradation increased in single or dual carbon sources. To our knowledge, this is the first study to discuss metabolite changes in Rhodococcus sp. T1 using sole substrate and dual substrate to enhance the long-chain alkanes and PAHs degradation potential. 展开更多

Objective China began providing antiretroviral therapy to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in 2003. This study was to investigate the living conditions, including quality of life and happiness, and need for palliative care of end-of-life PLWHA in rural Henan. Methods One hundred end-of-life AIDS patients were selected from Weishi, Zhenping and Tanghe counties in Henan, using convenience sampling. The World Health Organization Quality of Life for HIV (WHOQOL-HIV) BREF Chinese Version was used to measure the quality of life and the Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness (MUNSH) was employed to measure subjective welfare. Qualitative interviews and focus group discussions were undertaken to learn about the palliative care provided and the specific needs of the end-of-life patients. Results Patients’ overall quality of life was moderate (12.62±1.97). Highest scores were in the spirituality/religion/personal beliefs, higher than the average scores in the Chinese population (P0.01), while psychological (13.58±2.06) and environment (12.50±3.28) domain scores were similar to the latter (P0.05). Both independence (12.15±2.15) and physiological (14.04±3.16) domain scores were lower than the average of the people living with HIV/AIDS in other studies (P0.01); however, all were in the moderate range. The average MUNSH score was 21.00±6.20, which was also moderate. The in-depth interviews indicated that the Henan Provincial Government’s policy of treatment and care had a beneficial impact on end-of-life AIDS patients, although the care components could be improved. Conclusions Living conditions of the end-of-life AIDS patients were moderate, and the HIV/AIDS palliative care model used was beneficial to them. Care could be improved by assisting the family unit as a whole. 展开更多

Over the past 50 years, lunar laser ranging has made great contributions to the understanding of the Earth–Moon system and the tests of general relativity. However, because of the lunar libration, the Apollo and Lunokhod corner-cube retroreflector(CCR) arrays placed on the Moon currently limit the ranging precision to a few centimeters for a single photon received. Therefore, it is necessary to deploy a new retroreflector with a single and large aperture to improve the ranging precision by at least one order of magnitude. Here we present a hollow retroreflector with a 170-mm aperture fabricated using hydroxide-catalysis bonding technology. The precisions of the two dihedral angles are achieved by the mirror processing with a sub-arc-second precision perpendicularity, and the remaining one is adjusted utilizing an auxiliary optical configuration including two autocollimators. The achieved precisions of the three dihedral angles are 0.10 arcsecond,0.30 arc-second, and 0.24 arc-second, indicating the 68.5% return signal intensity of ideal Apollo 11/14 based on the far field diffraction pattern simulation. We anticipate that this hollow CCR can be applied in the new generation of lunar laser ranging. 展开更多

AIM: To elucidate the impact of hemodynamic parameters on ultrasonography and serum fibrosis markers for the assessment of liver fibrosis in the children with infant hepatitis syndrome (IHS). METHODS: Forty-one children with IHS and 46 healthy infants were examined by ultrasonography, and several hemodynamic indices such as peak systolic velocity (PSV) and resistant index (RI) of proper hepatic artery (PHA) were measured. Serum fibrosis markers including hyaluronic acid (HA), pre-collagen type-Ⅲ (PC-Ⅲ), collagen type Ⅳ (C-Ⅳ), and laminin (LN) were assayed by radioimmunoassays. In children with IHS, liver tissues were obtained either by ultrasound-guided liver biopsy (n = 35) or in the course of operation (n = 6). The stages of hepatic fibrosis were scored as mild (S1 and S2), moderate (S3), or severe (S4) according to liver histological diagnosis. Multiple groups comparative and Spearman correlative analyses were carried out. RESULTS: Histopathologically, 39 children (95.1%) were found to have hepatic fibrosis, 12 of them stage Sl or S2, 12 stage S3, and 15 stage S4. PSV, RI of the PHA, and serum HA showed a consecutive increase from mild to severe hepatic fibrosis and a close positive correlation with hepatic fibrosis in IHS group (r = 0.717, 0.745 and 0.712, respectively, P = 0.001). The Doppler waveform of HV was also positively correlated with the degree of hepatic fibrosis in IHS group (r = 0.783, P 〈 0.001).CONCLUSION: Combination of ultrasonic studies on the hepatic hemodynamics with the evaluation of serum HA may provide an indicator for hepatic fibrosis in patients with IHS, This may be a useful noninvasive method for the diagnosis and evaluation of the prognosis of IHS. 展开更多

Objective To explore the toxicological mechanism of hydroquinone in human bronchial epithelial cells and to investigate whether DNA polymerase beta is involved in protecting cells from damage caused by hydroquinone. Methods DNA polymerase beta knock-down cell line was established via RNA interference as an experimental group. Normal human bronchial epithelial cells and cells transfected with the empty vector of pEGFP-C1 were used as controls. Cells were treated with different concentrations of hydroquinone (ranged from 10 μmol/L to 120 μmol/L) for 4 hours. MTT assay and Comet assay [single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE)] were performed respectively to detect the toxicity of hydroquinone. Results assay showed that DNA polymerase beta knock-down cells treated with different concentrations of hydroquinone had a lower absorbance value at 490 nm than the control cells in a dose-dependant manner. Comet assay revealed that different concentrations of hydroquinone caused more severe DNA damage in DNA polymerase beta knock-down cell line than in control cells and there was no significant difference in the two control groups. Conclusions Hydroquinone has significant toxicity to human bronchial epithelial cells and causes DNA damage. DNA polymerase beta knock-down cell line appears more sensitive to hydroquinone than the control cells. The results suggest that DNA polymerase beta is involved in protecting cells from damage caused by hydroquinone. 展开更多

Under the guidance of strain tolerance, a new combination method for crude oil-degrading bacterial consortium was studied. Firstly, more than 50 efficient crude oil-degrading and biosurfactant producing bacteria were isolated from petroleum-contaminated soil and water in Tianjin Binhai New Area Oil field, China. Twenty-four of them were selected for further study. These strains were identified as belonging Pseudornonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Brevibacillus brevis, Achrornobacter sp., Acinetobacter venetianus, Lysinibacillus rnacroides, Klebsiella oxytoca, Stenotrophornonas rhizophila, Rhodococcus sp. and Bacillus thuringiensis. A shake-flask degradation test revealed that 12 of these strains could degrade over 50% of 1% crude oil concentration in 7 d. Of these, 8 strains were able to produce biosurfactants. Furthermore, environmental tolerance experiments indicated that the majority of the strains had the ability to adapt to extreme environments including high temperatures, alkaline en- vironments and high salinity environments. A mixed bacterial agent comprising the strains WB2, W2, W3 and HA was developed based on the environmental tolerance tests and subjected to the pilot-scale degradation test indicating that this bacterial agent could degrade 85.2% of 0.8% crude oil concentration in 60 d. Our results suggest that the application of this mixed agent could remediate crude oil polluted soils in saline and alkaline environments. 展开更多

Based on two mitochondrial genes (cyt b, ND4) and one nuclear gene (c-mos), we explored the relationships within the Asian pit viper genus Gloydius. In total, 23 samples representing 10 species were analyzed. All phylogenetic analyses support a monophyletic Gloydius with two major clades, one comprising G. brevicaudus, G. blomhoffii, and G. ussuriensis with the sister clade consisting of G. intermedius, G. saxatilis, G. halys and G. shedaoensis. The relationships among the three montane species G. strauchi, G. qinlingensis and G. liupanensis, as well as the two monophyletic groups, are unstable, and discussed. Divergence date estimation indicates that Gloydius lineage formed 15 Ma and diversification of the genus occurred at 9.89 Ma. Issues regarding the taxonomy of this genus are discussed where necessary. 展开更多

Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies have become an important class of modern medicines.The established technologies for therapeutic antibody discovery such as humanization of mouse antibodies,phage display of human antibody libraries and transgenic animals harboring human IgG genes have been practiced successfully so far,and many incremental improvements are being made constantly.These methodologies are responsible for currently marketed therapeutic antibodies and for the biopharma industry pipeline which are concentrated on only a few dozen targets.A key challenge for wider application of biotherapeutic approaches is the paucity of truly validated targets for biotherapeutic intervention.The efforts to expand the target space include taking the pathway approach to study the disease correlation.Since many new targets are multi-spanning and multimeric membrane proteins there is a need to develop more effective methods to generate antibodies against these difficult targets.The pharmaceutical properties of therapeutic antibodies are an active area for study concentrating on biophysical characteristics such as thermal stability and aggregation propensity.The immunogenicity of biotherapeutics in humans is a very complex issue and there are no truly predictive animal models to rely on.The in silico and T-cell response approaches identify the potential for immunogenicity;however,one needs contingency plans for emergence of antiproduct antibody response for clinical trials. 展开更多

Ice Nucleation of Cirrus Clouds Related to the Transported Dust Layer Observed by Ground-Based Lidars over Wuhan,China

Cirrus clouds related to transported dust layers were identified on 22 occasions with ground-based polarization lidar from December 2012 to February 2018 over Wuhan(30.5°N,114.4°E),China.All the events occurred in spring and winter.Cirrus clouds were mostly located above 7.6 km on top of the aloft dust layers.In-cloud relative humidity with respect to ice(RH_(i))derived from water vapor Raman lidar as well as from ERA5 reanalysis data were used as criteria to determine the possible ice nucleation regimes.Corresponding to the two typical cases shown,the observed events can be classified into two categories:(1)category A(3 cases),in-cloud peak RH_(i)≥150%,indicating competition between heterogeneous nucleation and homogeneous nucleation;and(2)category B(19 cases),in-cloud peak RH_(i)<150%,revealing that only heterogeneous nucleation was involved.Heterogeneous nucleation generally took place during instances of cirrus cloud formation in the upper troposphere when advected dust particles were present.Although accompanying cloud-top temperatures ranged from–51.9℃to–30.4℃,dust-related heterogeneous nucleation contributed to primary ice nucleation in cirrus clouds by providing ice nucleating particle concentrations on the order of 10^(−3)L^(−1)to 10^(2)L^(−1).Heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent crystal growth reduced the ambient RH_(i)to be less than 150%by consuming water vapor and thus completely inhibited homogeneous nucleation. 展开更多

Reducing the secondary electron yield(SEY)of Ag-plated aluminum alloy is important for high-power microwave components.In this work,Cu doped carbon films are prepared and the secondary electron emission characteristics are studied systematically.The secondary electron coefficientδ_(max) of carbon films increases with the Cu contents increasing at first,and then decreases to 1.53 at a high doping ratio of 0.645.From the viewpoint of surface structure,the higher the content of Cu is,the rougher the surface is,since more cluster particles appear on the surface due to the small solid solubility of Cu in the amorphous carbon network.However,from viewpoint of the electronic structure,the reduction of the sp2 hybrid bonds will increase the SEY effect as the content of Cu increases,due to the decreasing probability of collision with free electrons.Thus,the two mechanisms would compete and coexist to affect the SEY characteristics in Cu doped carbon films. 展开更多

Based on the rough surface topography with fractal parameters and the Monte–Carlo simulation method for secondary electron emission properties, we analyze the secondary electron yield(SEY) of a metal with rough surface topography. The results show that when the characteristic length scale of the surface, G, is larger than 1 × 10^(-7), the surface roughness increases with the increasing fractal dimension D. When the surface roughness becomes larger, it is difficult for entered electrons to escape surface. As a result, more electrons are collected and then SEY decreases. When G is less than 1 × 10^(-7),the effect of the surface topography can be ignored, and the SEY almost has no change as the dimension D increases. Then,the multipactor thresholds of a C-band rectangular impedance transfer and an ultrahigh-frequency-band coaxial impedance transfer are predicted by the relationship between the SEY and the fractal parameters. It is verified that for practical microwave devices, the larger the parameter G is, the higher the multipactor threshold is. Also, the larger the value of D,the higher the multipactor threshold. 展开更多

Objective—The umbilical cord is a critical pathway between mothers and fetuses, and regulations of umbilical vessel tension are important for fetal growth. Shengmai is an herbal medicine being used in treatments of cardiovascular diseases. However, effects of Shengmai on human blood vessels and related pharmacological mechanisms are unclear. Methods—This study investigated the effects of related mechanisms of Shengmai and its key compounds on human and sheep umbilical arteries and veins using organ bath systems. Key Findings—Shengmai significantly suppressed phenylephrine-stimulated vasoconstriction in umbilical arteries and veins. NG-Nitro-L-arginine Methyl Estercould not change the Shengmai-suppressed vasoconstriction in human and sheep umbilical vessels. Among four key compounds of Shengmai, Ginsenoside Re, Ginsenoside Rb1, Ginsenoside Rg1, and Schisandrin, only Ginsenoside Re showed the significant effect similar to Shengmai’s in the umbilical vessels. In Ca2+-free solution, Ginsenoside Re did not affect vasoconstriction. In addition, caffeine- or phenylephrine-stimulated vasoconstriction were not changed by Ginsenoside Re. Either charybdotoxin or glibenclamide could inhibit Ginsenoside Re-caused inhibition of the stimulated vasoconstriction in both human and sheep umbilical vessels, where 4-aminopyridine did not show the similar inhibitory effect. Conclusion—The results provide new information on Shengmai’s effects and underlying mechanisms in umbilical vessels. Importantly, the information gained offers interesting potential for developing new drugs acting on umbilical cords for fetal medicine. 展开更多
