The purpose of this present study is to investigate the frequency and variation of sandstorm in Minqin Oasis. Using daily observational data of sandstorm and other meteorologic data from 1954 to 2000, we have illuminated the relationship between sandstorm, meteorological parameters and human activities. The results of the analysis show that the highest frequency of sandstorms occurrence and their duration mainly focus on March, April and May, especially in April. Most of sandstorms occur from midday to nightfall, but relative few appear from midnight to forenoon, which apparently correlates to the daily variations of atmospheric thermal stability within atmospheric boundary layer. Monthly mean and annual mean duration of sandstorms coincide well with the frequencies of sandstorm occurrence. 展开更多

Within oasis-desert ecotone regions, the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)is an important parameter for evaluating the growth of vegetation. An accurate quantitative study between NDVI and environmental and anthropogenic factors is critical for understand the driving factors of vegetation growth in oasis-desert ecotone. In 2016,four periods Landsat 8 OLI_TIRS images, relevant climatological parameters data(air temperature, air relative humidity, wind velocity and accumulated temperature),land cover type data and soil data were selected as proxies. In order to quantify the explanatory power for NDVI spatial and temporal distribution in the southern edge of Dunhuang City and northern side of the Mingsha Mountain, the geographical detector model was used to explain the potential influences of factors versus the spatial distribution of NDVI,and each explanatory variable's relative importance can be calculated. The factor detector results disclose that the spatial distribution of NDVI is primarily dominated by land cover type. The risk detector results show that, high NDVI region is located within woodland. The mean value of NDVI displays an increase and then decrease trend with air temperature increase. With the increase of wind velocity and decrease of air relative humidity, the NDVI value shows a decrease trend. The interactive q values between the two factors are higher than any q value of separated factors. Results also indicate that the strongest interactive effects of NDVI are different in distinct seasons.Consequently, anthropogenic activity is more important than environmental factors on NDVI in oasis-desert ecotone. We also demonstrate that air relative humidity rather than air temperature have played a greater role in NDVI spatial distribution. 展开更多

Fences are one of the most effective measures to prevent and control wind-blown sand disasters, and the blocking effect of fences is largely determined by their porosity and height(H).This study employed wind tunnel experiments to measure wind velocities on both sides of wire mesh sand fences with porosities of 75%,63%,56%,36%and heights of 10,5 and 2 cm.The effects of porosity and height on the blocking effect of the fences were evaluated on the basis of velocity variability, flow field, and the wind velocity reduction coefficient. Results show that the smaller the porosity, the stronger the blocking effect. The fence with a porosity of 36%had the strongest windproof efficiency of 0.70 and longest protection range of 9 H,and thus showed the best applicability in preventing and controlling wind-blown sand disasters. The fence with a porosity of 56%showed a windproof efficiency of 0.31 and a protection range of 7 H,which could be considered for adoption. However, fences with porosities of 75%and 63%were not recommended to be adopted, because their windproof efficiency and protection range were very small.Overall, the higher the fence, the stronger the blocking effect. The highest fence(10 cm)had the longest protection range of 90 cm,which was the best in application.Nevertheless, the 5 and 2 cm fences were almost consistent with 10 cm fence in windproof efficiency, which was still suitable for wind and sand fixation. 展开更多

The survival of Dunhuang Oasis is largely determined by the evolution of sand dunes in the southern edge of the oasis, mainly composed of shield dunes and mega pyramid dunes, which occupy twothirds and one-third of the area, respectively. However, few studies have focused on dynamics of these dunes, especially in terms of quantification. So the theoretical basis of sand-control engineering is relatively limited. Here we present the characteristics of dune dynamics of a shield dune and mega pyramid dune in the southern edge of Dunhuang Oasis during April 2014-April 2016 based on measurement data of a 3-D laser scanner. Results indicate that the volume of the shield dune decreased during the monitoring period of two years, and the gravity centers of the monitored shield dune moved windward, indicating that sand was transported toward the oasis. Conversely, the dune volume of the mega pyramid dune increased and the gravity center presented no prominent movement, indicating that the megapyramid dune was relatively stable and its migration toward the oasis was not notable. Thus, compared with mega pyramid dunes, shield dunes in the southern edge of Dunhuang Oasis are identified as a more significant sand source endangering the protection of the oasis, and sand-control engineering should mainly focus on these shield dunes. 展开更多

Star dune is one typical kind of aeolian geomorphology in global sand seas.It has attracted scholars in various research fields for years because of its unique morphologic features like Egyptian pyramid. The landform pattern of star dune is mainly dominated by factors such as regional wind regime, sand availability, and local topography.Star dunes grow vertically as they accumulate sand brought in from different directions;however, little is known regarding morphologic changes during this process. The stability of star dunes based on quantitative data is another unsolved question due to the limitation in measuring equipment or other factors. And whether the star dune can grow into star sand hills is another scientific problem which needs to be discussed. In this paper, the heightening development process and morphological changes of star dunes were monitored in Mingsha Mountain of Dunhuang with the 3D laser scanner. Results show that the star dunes in Mingsha Mountain were formed by a group of relatively steady winds, which were northwest, northeast and south winds. With the increase of the height of the star dunes, the morphological parameters of the dune, such as the volume and bottom area, did not show regular changes. The surface erosion of both Dune 1 and Dune 2 during the observation period was closely related to the regional wind conditions.During the growth of the star dunes, the overall trend of the dunes was relatively steady and the dune shape maintained its stability although the aspect and slope of the sand dunes changed, indicating that the stability of star dune was not complete and was dynamic. Moreover, the variation range of the dune slope was proportional to the volume change of the dune. 展开更多
