Generally, they are either elevated or depressed at the same time. This study was aimed at evaluating the clinical ability of these markers in the early diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 (male 39, female 21) patients who tested positive to Acid Alcohol Fast Bacilli (AAFB) were studied. ESR and CRP values were estimated using standard procedures. Results: The mean ESR value among the AAFB positive patients was 53.16 ± 4.92 mm/hr while the CRP value was 0.273 ± 0.035 mg/L. Gender and age were not found to have any influence on the ESR and CRP values. No relationship was found to exist between ESR and CRP (r = 0.17;p = 0.235) and age (r = 0.125;p = 0.388). Conclusion: A moderately elevated ESR and low CRP values exist at the early diagnosis of tuberculosis. There is no correlation between ESR and CRP at the onset of tuberculosis;hence CRP cannot be used as a screening tool for early diagnosis of tuberculosis. 展开更多

Background: The effect of repeated blood donation on some biochemical values of healthy adult male blood donors in Calabar, Nigeria was studied. Methods: One hundred and fifty three (153) healthy repeat blood donors and 90 first time blood donors constituted the study population. Samples were analyzed using colorimetric procedures. Results: The BMI values of 24.4 ± 2.4 kg/ m2 in the first time donors was significantly higher than the 21.7 ± 1.7 kg/m2 obtained in repeat donors (P 2 = 0.7934, P Conclusion: A reduction in the values of some lipid profiles and high GGT activity is associated with repeated blood donations in this study population. Repeated blood donation may play a significant role in reducing the incidence of heart disease. 展开更多

Background: A deletion of 32 bp in the nucleotide sequence of CCR5 gene results in a defective CCR5 which confers protection from HIV infection in the homozygous state, while reducing the rate of disease progression to AIDS and death in the heterozygous state. The status of the CCR5Δ32 gene has not been reported in Nigeria. Aim: This study was aimed at analyzing single nucleotide polymorphism of CCR5 gene among the Ijaws resident in Yenagoa, Nigeria. Methods: 100 subjects (75 HIV negative and 25 HIV positive control) were recruited for this study. The CCR5 genes were amplified by 2 Stage PCR reaction using GeneAmp 9700 PCR system utilizing specific primers that would flank 32 bp deletion, followed by agarose gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing of 20 subjects was done followed by phylogenetic and polymorphism analysis. Results: The results showed that 75 (100%) of the HIV negative subjects had 189 base pair in their CCR5 gene. Nucleotide of the 20 (100%) of the sequenced samples were conservatively same and no SNP was observed. Conclusion: This study documented no SNPs in CCR5 gene of the study population hence;the study population has no protection from HIV infection. 展开更多
