Case of metachronous bilateral isolated adrenal metastasis from colorectal adenocarcinoma and review of the literature

rarely has a solitary, metachronous bilateral adrenal metastasis of colorectal cancer been reported. We depict a 41-year-old man who underwent sigmoid colon cancer radical surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for alocally ulcerative sigmoid adenocarcinoma with metachronous bilateral adrenal metastasis revealed by a computed tomography scan. histopathological examination showed adenocarcinoma, compatible with metastasis from the rectal cancer. the level of serum carcinoembryonic antigen had indicative significance for the presence of adrenal metastasis in the reported series. We performed a literature analysis related to this pathological characteristic and attach importance to consistent, vigilant radiological surveillance of the adrenal glands in the patients' follow up for colorectal cancer with or without subsequent adrenal metastasis.

Risk factors for adverse outcome in low rectal cancer

AIM: To demonstrate the oncologic outcomes of low rectal cancer and to clarify the risk factors for survival, focusing particularly on the type of surgery performed. METHODS: Data from patients with low rectal carcinomas who underwent surgery, either sphincter-preserving surgery (SPS) or abdominoperineal resection (APR), at The First Aff iliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in China from August 1994 to December 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Of 331 patients with low rectal cancer, 159 (48.0%) were treated with SPS. A higher incidence of positive resection margins and a higher 5-year cumulative local recurrence rate (14.7% vs 6.8%, P = 0.041) were observed in patients after APR compared to SPS.The five-year overall survival (OS) was 54.6% after APR and 66.8% after SPS (P = 0.018), and the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) was 52.9% after APR and 65.5% after SPS (P = 0.013). In multivariate analysis, poor OS and DFS were signif icantly related to positive resection margins, pT3-4, and pTNM Ⅲ-Ⅳ but not to the type of surgery. CONCLUSION: Despite a higher rate of positive resection margins after APR, the type of surgery was not identif ied as an independent risk factor for survival.

Imaging-based diagnosis for extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma in pediatrics: A case report

BACKGROUND Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma(EES)is a member of the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors which is pathologically known as a small,round,blue cell tumor involving bone and soft tissue.The prevalence of EES is only 15%-25%of all Ewing sarcoma and EES often occurs in patients aged from 20-mo-old to 30-yearsold resulting in an unfavorable prognosis.CASE SUMMARY The present case report described a 7-year-old patient with a palpable EES mass of 33 mm×27 mm×28 mm in the deep neck with symptoms of persistent dyspnea over the past 5 mo.After laboratory examinations,abnormal physiological and biochemical indicators were not found.Ultrasound images presented the mass to be complex,solid and fluid-filled with circumscribed margins and posterior acoustic enhancement.The mass also presented with partial internal vascularity.The contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scan illustrated the outstanding enhancement with fast perfusion mode in the early arterial phase. CONCLUSIONOur study suggested that a quick-growing mass in the pediatric patient is possibly a malignanttumor whether the mass has well-defined margins or not.

Reflectionless spatial beam benders with arbitrary bending angle by introducing optic-null medium into transformation optics

By introducing an optic-null medium into the finite embedded transformation,a reflectionless spatial beam bender is designed,which can steer the output beam by a fixed pre-designed angleβfor an arbitrary incident angle.The bending angleβof the beam bender is determined by the geometrical angle of the device,which can be changed by simply choosing different geometrical angles.For various bending angles,the designed spatial beam bender can be realized by the same materials(i.e.,an optic-null medium),which is a homogenous anisotropic material.Numerical simulations verify the reflectionless bending effect and rotated imaging ability of the proposed beam bender.A reduction model of the optic-null medium is studied,which can also be used for a reflectionless spatial beam bender with a pre-designed bending angle.

A quantitative investigation on consolidation of titanium-containing pellets during roasting process

The measurement method and quantitative indexes of iron ore consolidation characteristic temperature(CCT)during roasting,including consolidation starting temperature,highest consolidation rate temperature,and consolidation termination temperature,were improved based on previous research.The mineral properties of V-Ti magnetite(Panzhihua)were analyzed,and the CCT of V-Ti magnetite was calculated.To investigate the effect of mineral types on CCT,a series of trials were carried out by using various ores,including high-grade magnetite ore,high silicon iron ore,and V-Ti magnetite ore.The greatest shrinkage of V-Ti magnetite was 6.7%,the consolidation starting temperature was 991℃,and the termination temperature was 1384℃.The results of X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the V-Ti magnetite ore was composed of titanomagnetite,peridotite,and other minerals,which is more complicated than conventional magnetite.As a result,the temperature at the maximum rate of consolidation and the temperature at the termination of consolidation are the greatest.FeTiO_(3) and MgFe_(2)O_(4) in V-Ti magnetite may inhibit the creation of sinter necks between hematite particles.Liquid phase occurs inside the pellet when the temperature surpasses 1250℃,which may accelerate particle growth and the formation of a sintering neck within the pellets.

Sign-changing Solutions to Nonlinear Elliptic Equations with Hardy Potential and Critical Parameter in R^2

In this paper,a new Hilbert space is defined which is embedded into W01,q(Ω)for 1≤q<2.By using sign-changing critical point theory,we prove the existence of infinitely many sign-changing solutions in this new space for nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations with Hardy potential and critical parameter in R2.
