The bio-molecules from various plant components and microbial species have been used as potential agents for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In spite of a wide range of bio-molecules assisting in the process, synthesizing stable and widely applicable AgNPs by many researchers still poses a considerable challenge to the researchers. The biological agents for synthesizing AgNPs cover compounds produced naturally in microbes and plants. More than 100 different biological sources for synthesizing AgNPs are reported in the past decade by various authors. Reaction parameters under which the AgNPs were being synthesized hold prominent impact on their size, shape and application. Available published information on AgNPs synthesis, effects of various parameters, characterization techniques, properties and their application are summarised and critically discussed in this review. 展开更多

Light driven, photon mediated green synthesis of silver nano-particles (AgNPs) was carried out using aqueous silver nitrate solution (1 mM) and aqueous extract of almond (Prunus amygdalus). Experiments were carried out in dark, diffused sunlight and direct sunlight to study the influence of light intensity as well as by wrapping the reaction tubes with colored cellophane filters (violet, green, yellow and red) to investigate the effect of light color on AgNP synthesis. It was observed that the violet filter enhanced the AgNPs synthesis appreciably. The FTIR spectroscopic analysis confirmed participation of bio-molecules with hydroxyl and amide groups present in the almond extract as reducing and capping or stabilizing agents, respectively. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies revealed the particle size distribution of nano-particles as 2 – 400 nm, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed their spherical shape with an average size of about 20 nm. Growth analysis of AgNPs revealed an increase in number of nano-particles with time, whereas their rate of growth decreased gradually. The AgNP suspension was stable even beyond 3 weeks. 展开更多

Cytomegalovirus(CMV) infection is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in immunosuppressed persons. The incidence and association of CMV reactivation with adverse clinical outcomes in critically ill persons lacking evidence of immunosuppression at ICU admission has received great attention in the practice of critical care medicine.Critically ill patients in ICU who had associated risk factors such as mechanical ventilation, severe sepsis, or blood transfusion are more prone to CMV activation, which in turn led to increased mortality and morbidity in tenns of increased ICU stay, longer duration of mechanical ventilation, and higher rates of nosocomial infections. However, severe CMV as initial presentation mimicking dengue infection is rare.We recently came across seven cases with positive CMV serology at ICU admission, which we discuss in the light of current literature. 展开更多

It is globally accepted that soil carbon (C) dynamics are at the core of interlinked environmental problems, deteriorating soil quality and changing climate. Its management remains a complex enigma for the scientific community due to its intricate relationship with soil nitrogen (N) availability and moisture-temperature interactions. This article reviews the management aspects of soil C dynamics in light of recent advances, particularly in relation to the availability of inorganic N pools and associated microbial processes under changing climate. Globally, drastic alterations in soil C dynamics under changing land use and management practices have been primarily attributed to the variation in soil N availability, resulting in a higher decomposition rate and a considerable decline in soil organic C (SOC) levels due to increased soil CO2 emissions, degraded soil quality, and increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations, leading to climate warming. Predicted climate warming is proposed to enhance SOC decomposition, which may further increase soil N availability, leading to higher soil CO2 effiux. However, a literature survey revealed that soil may also act as a potential C sink, if we could manage soil inorganic N pools and link microbial processes properly. Studies also indicated that the relative, rather than the absolute, availability of inorganic N pools might be of key importance under changing climate, as these N pools are variably affected by moisture-temperature interactions, and they have variable impacts on SOC turnover. Therefore, multi-factorial studies are required to understand how the relative availability of inorganic N pools and associated microbial processes may determine SOC dynamics for improved soil C management. 展开更多
