In the past oral Caribbean and African cultures, performances by the“griots”reminded the community of its heroic past.In colonial studies, performance is a way for the colonized people to reconnect with its original soul and language and to become magnificent of creativity like the storyteller Solibo in Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique(Caribbean). In Chamoiseau’s novel, the Black policemen who came to investigate on Solibo’s sudden death during the performance look grotesque. They mimic the French colonizers with their“baton”and their racism at thinking evil of the Black community and they provoke laughter.Mimicry and the irony it conveys, subverts the formerly ironclad authority of the colonial order(Homi K.Bhabha in Location of Culture). The Cameroonian writer Werewere Liking-Gnépo also warns the Africans of the danger of wearing the White Mask of the colonizers(like Fanon in Black Skin,White Masks). She demonstrates in her Song/Novel She will be of Jasper and Coral, that while the African Mask empowers the performer of metaphysical powers, the White Mask of colonialism on the contrary weakens the performer who internalizes his inferiority and becomes complicit of his subjugation.Fortunately,Werewere Liking-Gnépo shows ithat the White Mask of colonialism can be used to mimic the harshness and corruption of the Colonial order and in doing so to bring back regeneration of Africa. 展开更多

When the umbrellas were held up against the tear gas attack in the protest on September 28, 2014, the hot issue raised by the marathon-like Yellow Umbrella Movement was not only the matter of politics but also a coincidence created for the Hong Kong locals to face, or to be faced with an already moot cliche: How the Hongkongese can redef'me and redeem their almost lost socio-cultural identity, particularly under the increasingly hegemonic influences and the socio-cultural invasion of the mainland after the 1997 Handover. My present paper is not intended to discuss the topic of identity on the platform of politics, or the postcolonial studies such as transculturation or cultural hybridty. But instead, I am far more interested in locating such issue on the aesthetic dimension of collective memory, which is revealed in two local contemporary Hong Kong compositions. In the process of shaping and reshaping a form of"HongKongeseness" in which the composers tend to create and the local listeners tend to experience, albeit transient, can appear in every nuance of the sonic metaphor embedded in the pre-existing indigenous tunes of a self-contained compositional work. 展开更多

In the socio-professional environment, the existence of values proves to be essential to the individual in order to live in harmony. It is by the search of oneself that you discover the world around you.Under this aspect, the philosophy of education can contribute to the conveyance of a decisive reflection on the impact of the educator’s mission on the people who are taught. On the one hand, the relativity of values puts into question their universal dimension, since they diversify in place and time according to different eras but also to different customs of each country. In this case, what is the finality of education and learning in relation to cultural diversification with regard to innovation in teaching? On the other hand, the educator’s personality plays a considerable and effective role in motivating his/her target group to seek out the higher and universal values and disseminate the principles of citizenship.Lastly, with regard to vocational training, the introduction of diversified pedagogical approaches as well as the adoption of learning strategies will enable the Educator to act in full knowledge and awareness of his action while being preoccupied in the management of the pedagogical process.His/her effective intervention will offer the opportunity to the group members to create synergies,in order to develop their unexploited potential and achieve a high level of awareness through the development of their personality. 展开更多

The national identity of the source culture often constitutes an important hermeneutic flame fi'om which a translated text is understood. At the same time, literary texts themselves sometimes have a tendency to resist cultural narratives and stereotypical ideas of a certain nation. This article explores how such a resistance is made in the English translations of four Swedish novels from the 1930s. These novels are all central texts in the history of Swedish literature, as they form the very basis of a literary current that had a huge impact on the development of the Swedish welfare state--proletarian fiction. In the translations of Harry Martinson's, Moa Martinson's, Eyvind Johnson's, and Ivar Lo-Johansson's breakthrough novels, the Anglophone target reader is faced with different kinds of disruptions of the Swedish national identity. Some of these disturb the conception of Sweden as a unified cultural space; others resist the idea of Sweden as a distinct cultural space. There is, however, no general rule to these disruptions: All four novels have their own, specific way of creating narrative resistance. 展开更多

As an classical book which disputes endlessly on the completed time but systematic and detailed record on official function, rituals and sacrificial vessels, Zhouli (Rites of Zhou) has become a paradoxical existence: on the one hand, it’s a crucial reference document frequently quoted for reconstructing the propriety in the past dynasties and explaining the ritual remains in modern archeology;on the other hand, its authenticity and edition age are always questioned. So the completed time of Zhouli is still a bottleneck problem and cannot be ignored. It is clear that the reconstruction of Qatariheritage has stemmed from a nostalgic mood. Thus, the government subsumed that heritage into certaininterpretations and readings. Therefore, as presented today, Qatari heritage is no longer a self-referential heritage ofan indigenous culture. Rather, it has become a principle to reflect the social and economic existence of the Qataricommunity along with other global communities. The mass use of heritage and the implementation of Westernmuseum culture, however, might be viewed by some as the importation of a culture rather than the preservation ofan existing one. To minimise such potential problem, the government opted to ignore any distinctions betweenrepresenting heritage, interpreting it, or imposing new ideas and thinking around it. Instead, it has focused onintroducing a heritage based on linking images of foreign elements that characterise Qatari heritage with new socialand economic experiences. 展开更多

Overseas research has shown that achievement emotions have direct relationships with "achievement outcome" and"achievement activities". The purpose of the present study aimed to compare the relationships betweenachievement emotions, motivation, and language learning strategies of high, mid and low achievers in Englishlanguage learning at an international university in a southern province in China. Quantitative data were collectedthrough a questionnaire survey of 74 (16 males, 58 females) TESL major students. Results indicated that studentsin general experienced more positive than negative achievement emotions; more intrinsically rather thanextrinsically motivated to learn English; and quite frequently used a variety of learning strategies to overcome theirlearning difficulties. However, Year Four low-achievers experienced more negative achievement emotions. Theyseldom used metacognitive, affective and social learning strategies, and they had lower degrees of intrinsicmotivation. Implications for institutional support for at risk students are discussed. 展开更多

This essay will investigate the differences between the ways George Eliot’s protagonist,Latimer, and Cajal’s protagonist,Juan Fernández, handle the extraordinary visions they are given. In“The Lifted Veil”by George Eliot,Latimer acquires a gift of clairvoyance, which enables him to see others’thoughts.Similarly,in“The Corrected Pessimist,”a novella in Cajal’s story collection—Vacation Stories,Juan acquires microscopic eyes, which enable him to lift the veil of reality and in turn that of the human mind. While Juan learns to zoom in on the beauty of the human mind and to use his appreciation of its beauty to understand its flaws,Latimer excessively zooms in on the dark side of the human mind and fails to sympathize with others. In comparing the different ways in which Latimer and Juan employ their microscopic visions, this essay aims to prove that Eliot and Cajal, though through contrasting ways, both highlight how important is shifting perspectives to cultivate one’s sympathy. 展开更多

This article hopes to explore a question:in the era of artificial intelligence,do we still need traditional translation of canonical texts, and how is such translation possible?Artificial intelligence has an all-round impact on the world’s productivity, and translation is the first area to be challenged. With the increasing accuracy and optimization of big data computing, daily translation, business translation, simultaneous interpretation and even general academic translation are gradually being replaced by machine translation. In this context, whether the canon translation by scholars is still meaningful has become a question that must be asked. This article believes that translation of canonical texts will never be out of date, and it is precisely in this era that the canon translation with academic standards and humanistic spirit are more needed by academia and society. The contemporary task of canon translation is not only translation and introduction, but more importantly, the inheritance and construction of its own academic history and humanistic thoughts,as well as the understanding and cultivation of human history, civilization and humanistic spirit. 展开更多
