2009年,何塞·穆希卡当选乌拉圭总统后,放弃总统府邸的生活,坚持居住在首都蒙得维的亚郊外的一座农场,睡在一间摇摇欲坠的板房里。农场的设施也很简陋,仅有一条通往外面的土路,而这条土路窄小到仅够一辆汽车行驶。最关键的是,连这座农场都不是穆希卡本人的,而是他夫人的财产。
