There are costs for doing the right thing, but regret is not one of those costs.I learned this lesson the hard way throughout a 42-year engineering career. As a young engineer, raising a family,I was more adaptable to management mandates,i.e.,I was more willing to be unethical to keep my job to make money and have health insurance for my family. As I grew in age, experience, and stamina,I was less adaptable,i.e.,I was more ethical. This article tells this story through events at various times in my engineering career1.Ethics define how we do the right thing. 展开更多

This work argues that Denmark Vesey,Nat Turner,Gabriel Prosser,David Walker,Henry Highland Garnet, amongst a few others were the reactionary(dialectical)exceptions to the black church, not the norm,an(ideological)institution established to interpellate and indoctrinate blacks to accept their conditions in slavery. In other words, the aforementioned were the enslaved who used Christian dogma to(negative dialectically)respond to the barbarity of slavery by violently convicting white Christian society for not living up to its values, ideas, and ideals given the treatment of African people by so-called Christians. In the latter sense it was reactionary;in the former,it was an ideological apparatus of domination and control for the institution of slavery. The contemporary attempt to racially vindicate the black church as a sui generis revolutionary institution overflowing with Africanisms is ahistorical and ideological reaped in pseudoscientific propositions stemming from postmodern and post-structural theories. 展开更多

Michel Foucault in Security, Territory, Population: Lectures at the Collège de France, 1977-1978 argues, that there has never been such a thing as an anti-pastoral revolution in Western societies. Yes, we have had revolutions against the disciplinary apparatus and legal devices of power (schools, hospitals, prisons) and we have had examples of revolutions against the economic foundations of social inequality, but there has never been a genuine revolution against pastoral power as a power relating to the conduct of individuals (but also entire social groups) and their disposition to “voluntary submission” to the will of external authorities. In my paper, I would like to reflect on this thesis, and taking it quite seriously, to look for examples of such revolutions. One of them is a women’s strike in Poland during the power of the conservative government of “Law and Justice”. Mainly referring to the texts of Silvia Federici and Paul Preciado, I will want to reflect on contemporary practices of reclaiming the body in contemporary capitalism. I will defend the thesis that regaining control over sexuality and reproduction means changing the material conditions of life and modern reproductive technologies. 展开更多

Why Do the Imaginary and Imaginary Communities Emerge in Social Theory? National Imaginary in the Context of Globalization

The end of modernism questions reality and its theoretical description, and various attempts of postmodern rethinking of the social emerge-from denial, assertion of the disappearance of the social to its salvation through radical rethinking.Theorizing around the imaginary emerges and continues as a result of this rethinking.Cornelius Castoriadis, for example, absolutizes the concept of the imaginary, which,in his opinion, even contains the rational.Charles Taylor gives imaginary, though important, but limited role as a background knowledge.Speaking of the imaginary, one cannot,of course, ignore Benedict Andersen’s imaginary communities.According to Andersen, the“imagination”of a nation, like any other community, reflects not the fact that they are“invented”or“constructed”but that they are the result of human practice, that social reality is a socio-historical and cultural product.Nation differs from other communities in the style of representation, namely, the representation-understanding,first of all,of space and time.A specific moment in time is connected not only with the past and future, but also with the same moment in another time and space measurement.People in this case, communicate and socialize through books, newspapers, and national languages. Most importantly, the nation as an imaginary community opposes itself to other communities, distinguishes itself from them, and strives for autonomy. And the guarantee of autonomy is the sovereign state, the nation-state,therefore the nation is always connected with the state and the territory of the exercise of its monopoly right. That is,the nation is an imaginary community that is real only to the extent that it is correlated with the modern territorial state.According to the author, the transformation of the national imaginary under the conditions of globalization is characterized by the loss of attachment to the territory,by the fact that territoriality ceases to be the main, organizing principle of social life.Social practices are increasingly formed beyond borders, belonging to ethnicity, national identity is not determined by territory and citizenship.Despite this,we must not forget that globalization is not a finished project. The transformation of the national imaginary should be viewed not only as the emergence of new imaginary communities, whether national or transnational, but also against the backdrop of interaction and even struggle between traditional forms of social practices and new ones,as evidenced by the growth of ethnic conflicts and separatist movements.According to Appudurai, this is also a consequence of globalization processes. And how this confrontation will end,the question remains open. 展开更多

This text is trying to discuss an approximation to the concept of human emancipation,as part of our well-being,in terms of Education and Knowledge.Without abandoning our metaphysical perception of wholeness,as an extension of the continuity principle which connects our conscious and unconscious world, emancipation is considered as a personal struggle against all oppressions. Some of these are grounded in our inner world. In accordance with the Enlightenment request, reasoning and knowledge can help us to structure new forms of acceptances which are shaping our own emancipatory meaning.Under the impact of social influence and personal interpretation, the perceived knowledge is considered as a mental tool containing an upgraded valid information.Taking under consideration that this validity is not able to overcome the metaphysical origins of human thought,it is suggested that when this mental tool is functioning in a self-transformative,self-constructed,and flexible form, human intelligence is structuring a compatible information management mechanism, which can enable us to formulate our personal acceptances, bridge our empirical and hyper-empirical inner world, and enlighten our request for self-criticism,self-determination,and above all emancipation. 展开更多

A prestigious conference claimed recently a revolution in neuroscience to understand consciousness. In this paper it is shown that this revolution already came, revealing the determinant role of information for human and living structures, both for their structuration and behavior, explaining consciousness at human as the result of the activity of the Informational System of Human and Living Structures. For this,it is emphasized and discussed the informational structure of the eukaryotic cell, the basic/representative composing unit of the multicellular body of human, animals, and plants, showing that the composition and functions of the informational system are basically similar with that of human. To reveal the driving role of informational mechanisms in human and subhuman organisms,it is introduced the concept of matter-related information, showing that information can be hidden/“embodied”or released/“disembodied”in or from the elemental micro/macro components of the body, during the multiple chain/cascade interactions including transduction processes. It is shown that such interactions are initiated from two main categories of informational sources:implicit(genetic)and explicit(external/internal)sources,the first category leading to structuration of the body and the second the reactive behavior.Consciousness in human and subhuman organisms, expressed by two corresponding informational relations,is the result of the release of information by the mind, acting as an informational operator/device,the development degree of mind and consciousness depending on the complexity degree and adaptation. An analogy of this Informational Model of Human and Living Structures(IMHLS)with the ancient model of chakras is highlighted, showing that these models support each other, applied with beneficial effects in Reiki technique and music-based cognitive multi-task therapy for neuro-rehabilitation. 展开更多

It is written as a physical note on paper. It is the result of harmony and composition of music that expresses the meaning of music created from the author’s mind, thinking, skills, and feelings, or composition or work. If a composition is not interpreted by a musician and set to music, it is nothing more than a notation and notation written down on paper. The main process of conveying the composition to the listeners through the musician’s interpretation of the music is somewhat overlooked. Therefore, in this research, the musician’s thinking and editing method, and how to express it through interpretation, were the doctoral dissertation and articles of researchers such as have been studied in comparison. 展开更多

In the Freudian-Lacanian field, there is an important distinction between knowledge and truth. The truth,of an unconscious nature,is something that inhabits us,directs us,but that escapes us.Knowledge,in turn,is something to be invented, from the hole of the Real, the Unconscious truth, and the subjective experience. The relationships between playing, creating, and fantasizing;the dimension of the uncanny, fiction, and imagination in subjectivity;the invention of knowledge of oneself, derived from the pains and flavors of being who one is,are creative dimensions that inhabit the subject, permeate the analytical act,and transversalize psychoanalysis. In the practice,we listen to and witness processes of analysis that awaken an invention/reinvention of oneself,in the process of remembering, repeating, and elaborating, but also in what the transference relationship summons.Knowledge of oneself, does not guarantee a life without mishaps, sadness, and illusions, but allows the invention and recognition of knowledge and a style. The concept of Sinthome(2007),coined by Jacques Lacan, comes in the wake of the processes of self-invention and is a knowing-doing with the symptom, with the paradoxes of joyful suffering, producing,as a result,an art of saying. Therefore,in this communication,I will articulate elements of theory, practice, and psychoanalytic experience that allow us to expand knowledge of the themes of invention and imagination articulated with the concept of sinthome, their relationships with subjectivity, and the direction of psychoanalytic treatment. 展开更多

The traditional mainstream of political philosophy establishes its thoughts on the subjectivity of“I”,which also formats its ethics of justice and freedom on the ground of selfness for itself and by itself.Political philosophers also incline to generalize and neutralize in labelling persons into the abstract concepts which ignore their particularity and diversity;as a result, this led to devastative consequence politically for the other, and also jeopardized the“I”.Hence Emmanuel Levinas provides his solution to this dilemma in an attempt to put the ethics of justice on the ground of the other.Justice for the other is the starting point for the political ethics. The other is the absolute infinity which cannot be encompassed by any conceptual generalization. It is otherness of the other that actually constitutes the selfness of“I”.The freedom of the other guarantees the freedom of“I”.Human being is initially ethical being.Justice for the other is the real foundation in securing justice for“I”.This mutual horizon of the other and I has primitive implication for the genuine ethics. 展开更多

This work examined Bertrand Russell’s main arguments against the existence of God and his strongly negative opinion on the historic role of religions. These arguments were:(1)The idea that God is a First Cause is invalid because the cosmos doesn’t have to have a beginning;(2)If there were reasons for God to issue the observed natural laws and not others then God Himself was just an intermediary of older laws;(3)Considering all the defects of the world one cannot consider God as an omnipotent designer;(4)If God created both right and wrong then it is no longer a significant statement that God is good;And(5)most people believe in God just because they have been taught from early infancy to do it.The criticisms of cosmological neuroscience were as follows:(1)The particular cosmic wave that carries our Universe could have a beginning;(2)Although there were reasons for the natural laws which God issued,it cannot diminish the divine creativity of this act;(3)Although the world is indeed full of defects, they are as much parts of the cosmic order as its splendors, due to their common roots in the Law of Coexistence in Diversity;(4)Although right and wrong may ultimately be both in God’s blueprint,He is still benevolent due to the Law of Divine-Evil Asymmetry permitting wrong only under the dominance of right;And(5)although many believe in God only because they were taught to do so and hope it provides safety, this is an oversimplification unable to explain the genuine Faith of others. The devastating judgement of Russel that religions have been just“a source of untold misery to the human race”was also examined. This brief article could not detail all the positive social changes with which the religions of goodness(e.g.,Abrahamic religions)enriched history, such as introducing the respect for human life. But the paper did remind the reader of the God-inspired work of Lao Tzu,Rumi,Michelangelo, the Bach-interpreting Leonard Bernstein,Mother Teresa,Martin Luther King Jr.,George Harrison and others including the architects of the Borobudur temple and astronauts like Frank Borman who read from the Bible while flying around the Moon. The paper ended with the central thought of Bertrand Russell that“The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge”,to emphasize that if committed to their Conscience atheists like him can live as moral lives as the men and women of Faith—the difference is being nothing else than sensing or not the Soul that permeates the cosmos. 展开更多

My career as a scientist has been a passionate pursuit of knowledge, objective knowledge devoid of ideology, that could prove useful in understanding and transforming the world. As an engineer,I aimed to produce planning solutions which would be economically feasible, technically viable, and socially acceptable.Disappointed by the ineffectiveness of methodology and planning initiatives to attain sustainability,I turned to the history of science to find answers, and finally to physics, searching for an explanation of gravity.I traced a path from social to natural sciences. My attachment to my values and ideals,my commitment to my goals costed me dearly. It led me to quit applied research,to move to a desert island in the Atlantic Ocean,to be consumed for years by a Galileo-like obsession.“I must create a system,or be enslaved by another man’s.I will not reason and compare:my business is to create”(Blake,2002,p.210),has been my life’s motto.Have I succeeded in my self-appointed task or have I just wasted valuable years of creative research building sand castles?I don’t have the answer to this question. What I know for sure is that I do not regret hanging to what I thought to be right. 展开更多

The thesis of this paper is that the digital noosphere of the World Wide Web and its users, the borderless move of virtually all resources of the planet, and the consequent globalization of most aspects of national politics, economy, and culture, along with the increasing difficulty of controlling the related high-tech military conflicts,human-made environmental crises, and the abnormal migrations of abused people now make it inevitable to leave behind the competitive international chaos rooted in humankind’s animal past and turn to the cooperative social spirit recommended by Aristotle,Lao Tzu,Jesus,Dante,H.G.Wells,Martin Luther King Jr.,John Lennon,Nicholas Hagger, and others to finally translate their aspirations into actions via establishing the Government of Earth for the decent and free. The paper presents a five-step,15-year,~$25B plan to start this process. That this plan has nothing to do with the Godless work of secret societies, the authoritarian urges of renewed fascism or the political absurdities of Marxism-Leninism it is relayed by the envisioned Intercontinental Education System of the outlined Government of Earth to teach every child on the planet-via a new community of digitally linked extraordinary teachers-for the beauty of lifelong learning, tolerance, duty, honor, free cooperation, and artful communication for divine missions. 展开更多

In the Empire Series,Hardt and Negri attempt to develop biopolitical critique to contemporary capitalist society.Hardt and Negri develop their own biopolitical critique based on their understanding of Foucauldian biopolitics. In the meantime, many arguments of biopolitical critique come precisely from Marx’s critique of political economy.Identifying biopolitical production as the hegemonic paradigm of contemporary capitalist production,Hardt and Negri accomplish the transition from the critique of political economy to biopolitical critique. However, such assertion does not mean a major rupture in the relation between the critique of political economy and biopolitical critique. On the contrary,it only implies an intertwined relationship between them. Moreover,if regarding Foucault’s discussion about political economy and biopolitics as a medium, then the conclusion can be made:There are overlaps between biopolitical critique and the critique of political economy, and the source of biopolitical critique can also be traced directly back to Marx. 展开更多

The prosperous development of the“Maritime Silk Road”in the 17th century not only brought convenience in sea transportation and promoted trade between countries, but also acted as a bridge connecting countries. This bridge has the function of cultural exchange between peoples, especially in introducing and promoting China’s cultural and ideological quintessence with neighboring countries.During this period,Linji and Caodong sects of Chinese Zen Buddhism were spread directly into Cochinchina of Dai Viet through Chinese senior monks who followed merchant ships to this place.Among them was the Most Venarable Shilian Dashan,a senior monk at Changshou Temple,Guangzhou, who accepted Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu’s invitation to teach the Soto Dharma in Cochinchina for nearly two years(1695-1696).Based on the study of relevant historical documents and autobiographical works on this trip byMost Ven.Dashan, the article presents his biography and activities. Moreover, this article analyzes the method of spreading Dharma,Chan ideology,as well as the significance of his Dharma propagation activities for Buddhism in Cochinchina at that time. 展开更多

It concentrates upon the understanding or explanation of conflict and power between nations or countries. It is of course highly relevant today with much warfare or threats thereof. One central theory is the so-called realism or neorealism. Its foremost representative today is Professor Mearsheimer. Professor John Mearsheimer has put several of his well-known lectures on YouTube. In these he spells out how he looks upon international politics today through a neorealist approach. I begin my comments by acknowledging that Professor Ryan is correct when he states early in his paper that Philo makes common cause with Demea by arguing that philosophical reflection can yield no knowledge of the nature or essence of the divine being. Ryan asserts that Philo’s defense of this claim, as set out in the third and fourth paragraphs in Part 2, has not received the attention it deserves from commentators. This, according to Ryan, is surprising, since, if Philo is successful here, he will have effectively shut down the project of natural theology, before it can even begin. Ryan goes further, citing my work, Scepticism and Belief in Hume’s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1986) to say that Philo’s challenge receives no direct answer from Cleanthes. Instead, Cleanthes proceeds directly to formulate his version of the Argument from Design. Ryan concludes his introductory remarks by asserting that, in these two paragraphs, Philo offers not one, but two, distinct arguments for the conclusion that we can achieve no strictly philosophical knowledge of the nature of God. He then proceeds to flesh out these two arguments, and attempts to show that neither of Philo’s objections is ultimately telling against Cleanthes’ experimental natural theology. 展开更多
