Nowadays, home appliances are communicating with each other with home short-range home area gateways, using existing network communication protocols such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, RFID, and WiFi. A Gateway allows homeowners and utilities to communicate remotely with the appliances via long-range communication networks such as GPRS, WiMax, LTE, and power liner carrier. This paper utilizes the Internet of Things (IoT) concepts to monitor and control home appliances. Moreover, this paper proposes a framework that enables the integration and the coordination of Human-to-Appliance, Utility-to- Appliance, and Appliance-to-Appliance. Utilizing the concepts of Internet of Things leads to one standard communication protocols, TCP/IPV6, which overcomes the many diverse home area networks and neighborhood area networks protocols. This work proposes a cloud based framework that enables the IoTs integration and supports the coordination between devices, as well as with device-human interaction. In this paper,a novel plug-configure-play ZigB ee-based smart home system is proposed to provide repeatable use and improve flexibility and maintainability with the reductions of cost and complexity,which can be customized and reconfigured without redevelopment. In this system,new sensors can be flexibly added through different interfaces on the ZigB ee nodes and the sensor network layer is transparent to the users. Therefore,by using our method,users can customize and use the smart home system simply by configuring the sensors information via software on the application layer.展开更多

The major smart grid devices are smart home appliances, distributed renewable energy resources and power substations. The seven domains existing smart grid conceptual model was developed without the IoT concept in mind. As the smart grid evolved, many attempts started to introduce the IoT as enabling technology to the grid. Each device in the grid can be considered as an object. Utilizing the concept of IoT, each device can have a unique IP address that can upload its status and download control commands via the Internet. This paper proposes a conceptual model for the smart grid within the Internet of Things context. The proposed model is based on IPV6 as the backbone of the smart grid communications layer.展开更多

It is very desirable in the recent SH market for the system to recognize users' beha...Wireless smart home system is to facilitate people's lives and it trend to adopt a more intelligent way to provide services. It is very desirable in the recent SH market for the system to recognize users' behaviors and automatically response the corresponding activities to satisfy users' actual demands. However, activity models in the existing approaches are usually defined separately through knowledge-driven methods. These approaches cause that the activity models can't be matched with the services dynamically. To address the problem, we develop the semantic association model and a novel approach of activity recognition and guidance is presented. In our approach, the smart devices and users' requirements are described by semantic models. When the requirements are detected and understood, smart gateway can provide appropriate services, achieving activity assistance. The semantic association model allows all related elements in smart home connect with each other logically. The approach has been implemented and the results show that the success rate of the approach based on semantic association model is higher than 33% at average as compared to the approach based on predefined models. The proposed approach can effectively help people who are in trouble with learning or remembering in the common life.展开更多

It has generally been avoided by the mai...The term Internet of Things (IoT) emerged in the early 2000s but actually gained momentum only in the past few years, however we still do not get to see them in our daily life. It has generally been avoided by the mainstream market due to its “cryptic” nature which requires technical knowledge prior to its use. Lack of strong business model (by companies) and inability to adapt to new rapid changes (by consumers) are the two primary factors contributing to the fact that IoT is well ahead of its times but it need no longer be. In this paper, I’ve created a setup for smart home that allows the users to control their electrical appliances from internet and even makes the appliances smart enough to react to the environmental conditions on their own. Using this setup, I observed the pattern in which electricity consumption and carbon footprints reduced as compared to the conventional setup i.e. without IoT. Analyzing this data provided me a solid proof that IoT definitely helps us to save electricity and environment. Since IoT is beneficial for all, I, then focused on the challenges that are hampering the penetration of IoT into the daily lives of consumers and how the consumer is overlooking the benefits that it has to offer, which even includes a primary concern for many, i.e. saving money. This paper is overall aimed to change the way a consumer thinks about IoT and to provide a solid ground to how it is beneficial.展开更多
Despite the extensive empirical literature relating to the Internet of Things (IoT), surprisingly few attempts have sought to establish the ways in which digital forensics can be applied to undertake detailed examinat...Despite the extensive empirical literature relating to the Internet of Things (IoT), surprisingly few attempts have sought to establish the ways in which digital forensics can be applied to undertake detailed examinations regarding IoT frameworks. The existing digital forensic applications have effectively held back efforts to align the IoT with digital forensic strategies. This is because the forensic applications are ill-suited to the highly complex IoT frameworks and would, therefore, struggle to amass, analyze and test the necessary evidence that would be required by a court. As such, there is a need to develop a suitable forensic framework to facilitate forensic investigations in IoT settings. Nor has considerable progress been made in terms of collecting and saving network and server logs from IoT settings to enable examinations. Consequently, this study sets out to develop and test the FB system which is a lightweight forensic framework capable of improving the scope of investigations in IoT environments. The FB system can organize the management of various IoT devices found in a smart apartment, all of which is controlled by the owner’s smart watch. This will help to perform useful functions, automate the decision-making process, and ensure that the system remains secure. A Java app is utilized to simulate the FB system, learning the user’s requirements and security expectations when installed and employing the MySQL server as a means of logging the communications of the various IoT devices.展开更多

Home area network (HAN) is one of the applications of loT. However, deploying HAN for underdeveloped countries in Africa is not easy due to the lack of Internet connectivity and stable electricity. First of all, Internet in Africa is growing fast but the majority of countries in Africa have Internet penetration of less than 10%. Furthermore, the problem of accessing electricity varies greatly across African countries, which is still less than 30% of the average usage rate. The aim of this paper is to model a secure HAN based on IoT for resource constraints environment, which are focused on both network connectivity and energy stability. Poor connectivity, the prevalence of low-end devices and several other obstacles should be considered for the secure HAN deployment in developing and underdeveloped countries. The proposed HAN model will provide the resource constraints module composed of network connectivity function and energy stability function to support the two constraints based on the IoT basic module and the security and privacy module. The proposed HAN model could be securely applied to various countries HAN applications with poor electricity supply and network connectivity.展开更多
