Sign language is used as a communication medium in the field of trade,defence,and in deaf-mute communities worldwide.Over the last few decades,research in the domain of translation of sign language has grown and becom...Sign language is used as a communication medium in the field of trade,defence,and in deaf-mute communities worldwide.Over the last few decades,research in the domain of translation of sign language has grown and become more challenging.This necessitates the development of a Sign Language Translation System(SLTS)to provide effective communication in different research domains.In this paper,novel Hybrid Adaptive Gaussian Thresholding with Otsu Algorithm(Hybrid-AO)for image segmentation is proposed for the translation of alphabet-level Indian Sign Language(ISLTS)with a 5-layer Convolution Neural Network(CNN).The focus of this paper is to analyze various image segmentation(Canny Edge Detection,Simple Thresholding,and Hybrid-AO),pooling approaches(Max,Average,and Global Average Pooling),and activation functions(ReLU,Leaky ReLU,and ELU).5-layer CNN with Max pooling,Leaky ReLU activation function,and Hybrid-AO(5MXLR-HAO)have outperformed other frameworks.An open-access dataset of ISL alphabets with approx.31 K images of 26 classes have been used to train and test the model.The proposed framework has been developed for translating alphabet-level Indian Sign Language into text.The proposed framework attains 98.95%training accuracy,98.05%validation accuracy,and 0.0721 training loss and 0.1021 validation loss and the perfor-mance of the proposed system outperforms other existing systems.展开更多
English to Urdu machine translation is still in its beginning and lacks simple translation methods to provide motivating and adequate English to Urdu translation.In order tomake knowledge available to the masses,there...English to Urdu machine translation is still in its beginning and lacks simple translation methods to provide motivating and adequate English to Urdu translation.In order tomake knowledge available to the masses,there should be mechanisms and tools in place to make things understandable by translating from source language to target language in an automated fashion.Machine translation has achieved this goal with encouraging results.When decoding the source text into the target language,the translator checks all the characteristics of the text.To achieve machine translation,rule-based,computational,hybrid and neural machine translation approaches have been proposed to automate the work.In this research work,a neural machine translation approach is employed to translate English text into Urdu.Long Short Term Short Model(LSTM)Encoder Decoder is used to translate English to Urdu.The various steps required to perform translation tasks include preprocessing,tokenization,grammar and sentence structure analysis,word embeddings,training data preparation,encoder-decoder models,and output text generation.The results show that the model used in the research work shows better performance in translation.The results were evaluated using bilingual research metrics and showed that the test and training data yielded the highest score sequences with an effective length of ten(10).展开更多

Culture elements, when embodied in a properly developed and organized curriculum can be systematically implemented all along the different phases of language growth. Mastery of a language is not simply mastery of vocabulary as well as grammar and spelling rules. The most successful language learners learn both culture and language together. The conceptualizations provided by research, although at times conflicting, form a useful foundation for language teaching that provides a deeper and a more enriching human experience. Making culture the core in a language class is akin to asserting the obvious (Furstenberg, 2010);they are two flip sides of the same coin. With its focus on revisiting the role of culture in the FL Classroom, the paper seems to fall into the same category - affirming the tried and true, but like Furstenberg, the author believes there is good reason to re-consider the possibility of closing the language and culture gap.展开更多

To model it, we consider the number of words between any...We study the short-term memory capacity of ancient readers of the original New Testament written in Greek, of its translations to Latin and to modern languages. To model it, we consider the number of words between any two contiguous interpunctions I<sub>p</sub>, because this parameter can model how the human mind memorizes “chunks” of information. Since I<sub>P</sub> can be calculated for any alphabetical text, we can perform experiments—otherwise impossible— with ancient readers by studying the literary works they used to read. The “experiments” compare the I<sub>P</sub> of texts of a language/translation to those of another language/translation by measuring the minimum average probability of finding joint readers (those who can read both texts because of similar short-term memory capacity) and by defining an “overlap index”. We also define the population of universal readers, people who can read any New Testament text in any language. Future work is vast, with many research tracks, because alphabetical literatures are very large and allow many experiments, such as comparing authors, translations or even texts written by artificial intelligence tools.展开更多

The main goal of this paper is to show how the way German culture shaped itself through translation of foreign cultural elements can be seen as a paradigm for identity forming in general when one considers the aspects...The main goal of this paper is to show how the way German culture shaped itself through translation of foreign cultural elements can be seen as a paradigm for identity forming in general when one considers the aspects of imitation and re-accentuation of foreign cultural elements as a vital factor in inter-cultural communication in which translation of one system’s language into the language of another one plays an important role in the interactive process of understanding each other but,at the same time,being able to draw a distinction between one’s own cultural system and the foreign one(s).Taking the examples of Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s plan to establish a German cultural system based on a shared German language,this paper will go on to examine translation processes,such as Schleiermacher’s translation of Plato into German and Heidegger’s translation of Plato into Heideggerian terminology in order to show certain mechanisms in translation that introduce foreign cultural elements into a cultural system by altering them linguistically.Johann Fischart’s Rabelais translation will be looked at to show how a French text is turned into a uniquely self-referential German text that changes everything French into German cultural symbols to radically move away from the foreign original.Surprisingly the introduction of foreign elements into a cultural system increases the likelihood to establish a cultural identity by increasing the self-referentiality and reflexivity of the cultural system through increasing the number of cultural symbols that the system can refer to.Moreover,this self-refernetiality is beneficial to the stability of the system.展开更多

My purpose in this paper is to answer the question of how elements of the vocabulary of sciences (literature and philosophy) as well as cultural specific items are rendered in the Wolof target text. Therefore, in this work, I explore methods and strategies of translation like borrowings, paraphrases, and analyze furthermore some differences noticeable in the translation of some poems at the cultural level. These analysis-steps enable the investigation of, contextually, the central issue of "cultural translatability" and the reception of translation of European poetry into African languages in general and German poetry into Wolof in particular. The conceptualizations provided by research, although at times conflicting, form a useful foundation for language teaching that provides a deeper and a more enriching human experience. Making culture the core in a language class is akin to asserting the obvious (Furstenberg, 2010);they are two flip sides of the same coin. With its focus on revisiting the role of culture in the FL Classroom, the paper seems to fall into the same category - affirming the tried and true, but like Furstenberg, the author believes there is good reason to re-consider the possibility of closing the language and culture gap.
文摘We study the short-term memory capacity of ancient readers of the original New Testament written in Greek, of its translations to Latin and to modern languages. To model it, we consider the number of words between any two contiguous interpunctions I<sub>p</sub>, because this parameter can model how the human mind memorizes “chunks” of information. Since I<sub>P</sub> can be calculated for any alphabetical text, we can perform experiments—otherwise impossible— with ancient readers by studying the literary works they used to read. The “experiments” compare the I<sub>P</sub> of texts of a language/translation to those of another language/translation by measuring the minimum average probability of finding joint readers (those who can read both texts because of similar short-term memory capacity) and by defining an “overlap index”. We also define the population of universal readers, people who can read any New Testament text in any language. Future work is vast, with many research tracks, because alphabetical literatures are very large and allow many experiments, such as comparing authors, translations or even texts written by artificial intelligence tools.
文摘With the rapid development of the global economy and the increasingly frequent exchanges between different cultures,the internal and external trade of various countries is faced with new opportunities and challenges.Trademark translation is not only the transformation and transition of languages,but also the translation of many cultural images.The main obstacle in trademark translation is the cultural cognitive difference caused by languages,nationality,and environment.These cultural differences bring some difficulties to trademark translation.Based on the cross-cultural awareness,this thesis discusses the cultural factors in the translation of trademarks,and on this basis,summarizes the principles to be followed in the translation of cross-cultural trademarks,and finally puts forward the corresponding translation strategies.

文摘As one of the carriers of Confucian culture,and from ancient times to the present,Lunyu or The Analects or The Analects of Confucius,has been well received by readers at home and abroad,and there are more and more English translations of Lunyu.This article will select some of the vocabulary translations with ancient Chinese characteristics in Lunyu as the object,employ the method of a comparative analysis to explore the cultural connotation behind the text and the dissemination of the translation,and discuss the translator’s translation strategies.Judging from the research on The Analects by scholars from home and abroad and the opening and development of overseas Confucius Institutes,Lunyu has exerted an enlightenment effect in different times.
文摘The main goal of this paper is to show how the way German culture shaped itself through translation of foreign cultural elements can be seen as a paradigm for identity forming in general when one considers the aspects of imitation and re-accentuation of foreign cultural elements as a vital factor in inter-cultural communication in which translation of one system’s language into the language of another one plays an important role in the interactive process of understanding each other but,at the same time,being able to draw a distinction between one’s own cultural system and the foreign one(s).Taking the examples of Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s plan to establish a German cultural system based on a shared German language,this paper will go on to examine translation processes,such as Schleiermacher’s translation of Plato into German and Heidegger’s translation of Plato into Heideggerian terminology in order to show certain mechanisms in translation that introduce foreign cultural elements into a cultural system by altering them linguistically.Johann Fischart’s Rabelais translation will be looked at to show how a French text is turned into a uniquely self-referential German text that changes everything French into German cultural symbols to radically move away from the foreign original.Surprisingly the introduction of foreign elements into a cultural system increases the likelihood to establish a cultural identity by increasing the self-referentiality and reflexivity of the cultural system through increasing the number of cultural symbols that the system can refer to.Moreover,this self-refernetiality is beneficial to the stability of the system.
文摘The article deals with the translation of German poetry into Wolof and is based on Tamsir Annes's translation of German poems under the title Tdere-Woy yi/Das Buch der Lieder. My purpose in this paper is to answer the question of how elements of the vocabulary of sciences (literature and philosophy) as well as cultural specific items are rendered in the Wolof target text. Therefore, in this work, I explore methods and strategies of translation like borrowings, paraphrases, and analyze furthermore some differences noticeable in the translation of some poems at the cultural level. These analysis-steps enable the investigation of, contextually, the central issue of "cultural translatability" and the reception of translation of European poetry into African languages in general and German poetry into Wolof in particular. The article also focuses on the importance of the reception of German poetry in Wolof as a means of intercultural communication between German and Wolof-speaking countries but as means to develop African languages like Wolof in which the translation of the selected poems has been operated.
