Ecological Discourse Analysis Based on the Corpus-A Case Study on the Environmental Discourse of 21st Century

Language learning materials not only provide language input for learners but also subtly disseminate ideology and influence readers’behavior.This study,based on the framework of ecological discourse analysis,quantitatively analyzes and qualitatively describes the ecological significance of environmental texts in the 21st Century.The aim is to provide references for the compilation of environmental discourse in language learning materials,promote the construction of more ecologically beneficial discourse,and facilitate the widespread dissemination of the ecological philosophy of“Diversity and Harmony,Interaction and Co-existence”among young readers.The initial findings of this study are as follows:In the environmental texts of the publication,a large number of relational processes and action processes are used to objectively represent the natural environment;the discourse tends to be ambiguous and beneficial,generally aligning with the ecological philosophy of“Diversity and Harmony,Interaction and Co-existence.”This can guide readers to correctly understand and face environmental issues,which is conducive to the healthy development of natural ecosystems.

The Youth’s View of Marriage in Chinese Mainstream Media Discourse-A Corpus-assisted Three-dimensional Discourse Analysis

The rising of aging and the declining of birth rates have forced the public to focus on the youth’s view on marriage.Based on critical discourse analysis and combined with Fairclough’s three-dimensional discourse analysis model,this paper builds a“Chinese media News Report Corpus on the topic of‘marriage’”whose news are collected from China Daily.It is found that the discourses are neutral and objective with regard to the advantages and disadvantages of marriage,but in general,it is still a traditional view of marriage that is inevitable and closely related to fertility.Although this is controlled by the policies and the social reasons including declining fertility rate,it deviates from the current view of the youth towards marriage,resulting in many serious consequences such as young people’s rejection.In addition,this research found that male and female have great differences in their views on marriage,and men’s resistance to marriage is far greater than that of women,which is departure from the public’s cognition.The reasons behind this need to be explored in order to solve the marriage and love problems of young people in today’s era and realize the healthy development of young marriage.

A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of Lingnan Cultural Promotional Videos on Social Media

In recent years,more and more directors of culture and tourism have taken part in the promotion of local cultural tourism by cross-dressing,talent shows,and pushing their limits on self-media platforms.This study investigates short videos of Lingnan culture promoted by directors general and deputy directors general of the Culture,Radio,Television,Tourism,and Sports Bureau of counties and cities in Guangdong Province on social media by the method of multimodal critical discourse analysis.The analysis of 33 videos shows that Lingnan culture is a domineering and confident culture,historical culture,graceful and elegant culture,and vibrant and active culture.Domineering and confident culture is embedded in the utterances and behaviors of the directors general or deputy directors general in the video.Historical culture is realized through the conversation with historical figures through time travel.Graceful and elegant culture is constructed in the depiction of sceneries and the depiction of characters’manners.Vibrant and active culture is represented in the depiction of the characters’actional process and analytical process.

Discourse Analysis of the Belt and Road Initiative From the Perspective of Central Asian Countries: A Case Study of the Republic of Kazakhstan

This study employs Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)three-dimensional model,using the Republic of Kazakhstan as a case study,to delve into the discourse construction of China’s Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)in Central Asian countries.Through detailed analysis of policy documents,media reports,and public discussions in Central Asian countries,this paper reveals how the BRI constructs specific social practices,discourse events,and textual meanings within these nations.The findings indicate that through this global development strategy,China has not only strengthened its economic ties with Central Asian countries but has also exerted profound influences on political,cultural,and social levels.

Since the early 1970s,discourse analysis has garnered significant attention across various academic disciplines,marked by the proliferation of numerous theoretical frameworks.Then the profound impact of discourse analysis on the field of translation research has become increasingly apparent,with a substantial body of translation studies embracing the discourse analysis approach.The disciplinary significance of discourse analysis has become undeniable.Contemporary China is in a relatively weak position in global cultural communication.To advance Chinese culture on the global stage,Chinese literary works serve as a precious channel.To effectively showcase the unique qualities of Chinese literature,translators must consider a multitude of influencing factors and address them judiciously to enable target language readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Chinese literary artistry.This paper takes Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of Kong Yiji as an example to elucidate the function of discourse analysis in translation of Chinese literature.

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Cyberbullying Language Based on Text-mining Techniques——A Case Study of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

With the development of AI,a large amount of cyberbullying language flooded into the Internet.Cyberbullying language damages the online environment and causes mental harm to the victims of online bullying.Many researchers,therefore,have paid much attention to the problem.This study collected online comments targeted at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as a corpus and then analyzed text data based on Critical Discourse Analysis by using text-mining tools to explore the factors that contribute to the social ideological effects of the cyberbullying language.The research results show that cultural differences,prejudice,or social exclusion due to race or gender form cyberbullying on social media.

Critical Discourse Analysis Based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics: Taking The Economist’s First Commentation on the End of China’s Zero-COVID Policy as an Example

Based on Halliday’s systemic functional grammar,especially the ideational function,this research aims at disclosing the hidden ideologies and values of the seemingly objective news reports on China’s COVID-19 policies in The Economist.Transitivity,voice,and nominalization are the major analytical subjects.After China lifted the zero-COVID policy,western media began criticizing China’s lack of data sharing,with some misinformation and misleading reports.The denouncement of inertness and reluctance to fight against the pandemic disclaim the Chinese government’s efforts and depreciate China’s image.China is portrayed as the villain and destroyer of people’s health worldwide.Meanwhile,they also hold a hesitant attitude toward China’s diplomacy.The re-engaging with foreign countries and travel restrictions have been described as imprudent and rushed actions.They also consider China as the fuse of contradiction in the United Nations.What is overt is their view of breaking up China.

Progress and prospect of critical discourse analysis

The present paper reviews the theoretical framework and analytic methods of Critical Discourse Analysis （CDA） and then introduces the latest development of CDA from the perspectives of linguistic anthropology, cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics. The prospect of CDA is accordingly advanced.

Mulan,the cartoon rewritten by Disney based on the traditional Chinese folklore,won tremendous praises globally.Under the theoretical framework of the three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis proposed by Norman Fairclough,this research tries to analyze the unique discourse features of Mulan.By the successive analyses of description,interpretation and explanation,this research studies the discourse strategies of Disney movies represented by Mulan,the transmitted ideologies,the causes of the discourse formation and the social effects of the discourse,providing a paradigm for the establishment of Chinese multicultural discourses.

A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis of Trump and Biden Administrations’China Policies

The theory of proximization is an effective discourse strategy to study the speaker’s ability to achieve his own legitimacy or reinforce the other’s illegitimacy,and its superiority can be maximized by means of quantitative and comparative analysis.In this study,we collected reports on Trump’s and Biden’s policies on China to build two small corpora,with a total of 11,030 words in the Trump corpus and 17,566 words in the Biden corpus.The critical discourse analysis is combined with proximization theory.With the help of BFSU Qualitative Coder 1.2,Antconc 3.5.7,and Log-Likelihood and Chi-Square Calculator 1.0,a critical cognitive score of the relevant discourse was conducted from the perspective of proximization theory.It has been found that:(1)Both Trump and Biden administrations resort to a large number of spatial proximization strategies to build ODCs converging to IDCs with China as the ODC,posing a threat to internal physical IDCs;(2)in the use of temporal proximization strategy,both administrations use primarily modal verbs and various entities to construct ODCs that extend indefinitely into the present and future,emphasizing the urgency and the threat of the effect and reinforcing the legitimacy of their actions;(3)in terms of axiological proximization strategy,the two administrations differ greatly from each other,indicating that there are still discursive biases.

English Classroom Discourse Analysis: Based on the Interpersonal Meta-function

Classroom discourse analysis plays a significant role in linguistics and language teaching. The present research is a case study, aiming to explore how the Interpersonal meta-function is reflected in the English classroom discourse, as well as to provide some suggestions for pedagogical improvement based on the findings. The results of the analysis indicate that in terms of Mood, the declarative clause is most frequently used, followed by the interrogative and imperative clause respectively; in terms of modality, the teacher uses modal verbs and Mood Adjuncts to express the degree of certainty; in terms of personal pronouns, the teacher prefers to use the first person plural pronouns. It is suggested that the class should be student-centered and that an equal teacher-student relationship should be established.

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Hedges in Chinese and American Spokespersons’ Remarks at Press Conference

Hedging is a communication strategy frequently used by the spokespersons at the press conference.This thesis intends to find out the ideologies hidden behind those hedges under the guidance of Fairclough’s three-dimensional model.As a research method of linguistics,critical discourse analysis(CDA)aims to reveal the the relationship among language,power and ideology hidden behind the language.This thesis adopts Prince’classification criteria of hedges to identify and count the different types of hedges in the research data selected from Chinese and American government websites.The analysis is conducted at the following three steps:description,interpretation and explanation.The first stage is to recognize and count the hedges in two languages,then to find their similarities and differences and the last step is to find possible reasons for those similarities and differences and the ideologies behind the hedges.Analysis results show that differences in culture values and diplomatic ideology contribute to the different ideologies.

Discourse Analysis in Women Entrepreneurial Networks： A Review of the Literature

Over the past few years much has been written about the rapid spread of various types of firm networking, the area of women entrepreneurs＇ networks and small business entrepreneurship is still a challenging research field. This paper reviews literature addressing women business owners from the network perspective of understanding their contribution to the existing knowledge. The paper makes use of a discourse analysis to examine a selection of empirical research articles from 2000 to 2012 on women networks in entrepreneurship research in order to convey the key concept, main findings, key contribution, and the methodology. Moreover, it identifies in a broader literature the hegemonic statements with regard to women and networks in entrepreneurship and default of the existing research. Main findings based on the discourse analysis reveal six hegemonic statements; women businesses have higher discontinuance rates and one suggested reason for this problem is that women lack of networking, women have a less diverse network, women are disadvantaged compared to men and therefore cannot network effectively, women are more likely to network with men, women favor ＂strong ties＂ and women network size is small. Methodologically, the current status of research on networks and entrepreneurship validates that most of the knowledge is gained through cross-sectional surveys. Entrepreneurs may reveal their thoughts, their experience and reflections only if the relationship between the researcher and the researched is symmetrical. Qualitative approaches are suggested in order to ＂tap＂ the voice. Moreover, researcher hopes that the literature review on women entrepreneurial network will give some inspiration to researchers.

Functional Discourse Analysis of Andersen＇s ＂The Little Match-Seller＂

Within a framework of Halliday＇s SFL （Systemic Functional Linguistics）, this paper takes a functional approach to the analysis of the fairy tale--＂The Little Match-Seller＂ （Andersen, 1846）. The analysis is carried out in three respects： genre, register and language. Genre analysis indicates that the schematic structure of the fairy tale is very much in line with the one mentioned by Hasan. Register analysis shows that the material process is the most dominant one; the Finite in the clauses is predominantly in past tenses, and most of the Themes in the text are unmarked ones. Language analysis reveals that the lexical density in the fairy tale is relatively low. The findings in this paper can help deepen people＇s understanding of the textual features of English fairy tales.

Retrieve Logic Flow in Discourse Analysis of Academic Paper： A Case Study of Law, Law, What Is Law

The present study shall be mainly concerned with logic flow and its expressions in academic paper. It examines Law, Law, What Law？ and intends to focus on two research goals： （1） to identify logic flow among clause complexes; （2） to figure out meanings and intentions of those logic expressions. The description and analysis shall demonstrate how the logic flow is achieved on two aspects of textual cohesive devices： grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Any reader or translator ignores such devices of cohesion may not only get lost in the maze of language but miss subtle touches of irony, hence misreading the author＇s points of view.
