Sufficient evidence suggests that the two pathological conditions share common pathogenic etiology which is not yet fully defined. Superimposed anaemia is a common finding among patients suffering from cardio-renal syndrome. The combination of CKD, CHF and anaemia increase the probability of death by 6 times compared to normal individuals. Early attempts to restore anaemia either by iron supplementation, erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) or combination of the two have reported to improve quality of life, morbidity and mortality especially among patients treated by cardiologists. Recent publications of well controlled epidemiological studies failed to prove convincing beneficial effect of the above mentioned therapy moreover skepticism has raised concerning the safety of restoring anaemia among patients with cardio-renal syndrome as well as used medications. There are still unresolved problems concerning the definition of anaemia, by means of hemoglobin level among these patients, the target hemoglobin level and the therapeutic regimen of ESAs administration and iron supplementation. We need much more evidence in order to define an effective and safe treatment strategy correcting anaemia among patients with cardio-renal syndrome.展开更多

Erythropoietin Stimulating Agents like epoetin Alfa and darbepoetin alpha are used commonly to treat this form of anemia. Recent evidence suggests increased morbidity and mortality associated with higher hemoglobin in the setting of these agents use. Whether these complications are due to higher dose of erythropoietin or its resistance (i.e. inflammation), or achieving a higher hemoglobin remains unclear. Tightening restrictions on these agents has led to increase interest in the use of non-ESA adjuvants to improve erythropoiesis. This review will highlight the most promising of these agents.展开更多

Activity-guided fractionation led to isolate myo-inositol (3) and D-mannitol (4) as the stimulating compounds on melanin production in B16 melanoma cells. Also, ergosterol (1), uracil (2), and D-glucose (5) have been isolated from the methanol extract of P. citrinopileatus and showed no effect on melanin production in B16 melanoma cells. These results indicated that myo-inositol (3) and D-mannitol (4) are potential candidates that could be useful such as a gray and a white hair-preventive agent or tanning agent.展开更多

In the present study, we investigated the effects of G-CSF and the combination effects of G-CSF and cisplatin on lung cancer growth. We investigated the effect of G-CSF against the LL-2 and KLN-205 cells by MTT assay and tried to detect the G-CSF receptor by RT-PCR. Next, to analyze the G-CSF effects in vivo, we transplanted the LL-2 into C57BL/6 mice, intraperitoneally administered G-CSF (30 micro/kg/day) with or without cisplatin (5 mg/kg), measured the tumor size and analyzed pathologically by HE and immunostaining. In vitro analyses, G-CSF showed no effects in LL-2 and KLN-205 cells, and RT-PCR revealed no G-CSF receptor mRNA. In vivo analyses, G-CSF alone did not significantly suppress tumor growth. However, concurrent G-CSF administration with cisplatin significantly enhanced the tumor suppressing effect of cisplatin in early stage of tumor growth. The analysis data of vWF immunostaining indicated that the neovascularization in the peripheral region of the tumors was more enhanced in G-CSF treatment mice. ELISA assay revealed that G-CSF did not influence the serum concentration of TNF-alpha and IL-12 in tumor-bearing mice. This study suggests that concurrent (combination) administration of cisplatin with G-CSF is a safe and effective method for enhancing anticancer effects and reducing chemotherapeutic agent-induced myelosuppression.展开更多

There are varying forms of physiological stimulations including the use of electrical currents, electromagnetic fields, temperature change, ultrasound, light and so forth. These stimulation therapies can be categorized into three main modalities: electrical stimulation modalities, thermal modalities, and non-thermal modalities. Electrical stimulation modalities include therapeutic techniques where electrical current is directly applied to the body of treated subject. Direct application of electrical current to the brain also falls under this category. Thermal modalities consist of stimulations that induce temperature change on the body for therapeutic effects without the direct transfer of electrical current. Non-thermal modalities functions through energy transfer without directly applying electrical current and without the effects of temperature change. A fourth miscellaneous category for stimulation techniques consists of the stimulation effects of music along with physical stimulation as in massage therapy. Common to most of these therapeutic strategies is that the stimulation is delivered at certain fixed periods or frequencies. We introduce some rudiments of fractal dynamics, and the notions of self-similarity, scale-invariance, and long-range correlation or memory in the dynamics of a system. We present evidence that fractal dynamics is commonly observed in healthy physiological systems while unhealthy systems are shown to veer away from fractal dynamics towards periodic or random motion. This difference in dynamics can be observed in many biological signals such as in neural activity, heart rate variations, and breathing patterns. We propose that an optimal stimulation technique should thus be one that encourages an unhealthy, non-fractal pathological system towards a healthy, fractal dynamic. Given the ubiquity of fractality in healthy biological dynamics, we argue that a fractal pattern of stimulation is a more optimal approach to functional restoration than the widely used conventional periodic stimulation, which may further consolidate the existing pathological dynamics.展开更多
