The objective of this work is to develop an automation system for quality control (QC) in the production of Iodine-125 sealed sources, after undergoing the process of laser beam welding (LBW). These sources, also ...The objective of this work is to develop an automation system for quality control (QC) in the production of Iodine-125 sealed sources, after undergoing the process of laser beam welding (LBW). These sources, also known as Iodine-125 seeds are used, successfully, in the treatment of cancer by brachytherapy, with low-dose rates. Each small seed is composed of a welded titanium capsule with 0.8 mm diameter and 4.5 mm in length, containing Iodine-125 adsorbed on an internal silver wire. The seeds are implanted in the human prostate to irradiate the tumor and treat the cancerous cells. The technology to automate the quality control system in the manufacture of lodine-125 seeds consists in developing and associate mechanical parts, electronic components and pneumatic circuits to control machines and processes. The automation technology for Iodine-125 seed production developed in this work employs programmable logic controller (PLC), step motors, drivers of control, electrical-electronic interfaces, photoelectric sensors, interfaces of communication and software development. Industrial automation plays an important role in the production of Iodine-125 seeds, with higher productivity and high standard of quality, facilitating the implementation and operation of processes with good manufacturing practices (GMP). Nowadays, the Radiation Technology Centre at IPEN-CNEN/SP imports and distributes 36,000 lodine-125 seeds per year for clinics and hospitals in the whole country. However, the Brazilian potential market is of 8,000 lodine-125 seeds per month. Therefore, the local production of these radioactive seeds has become a priority for the Institute, aiming to reduce the price and increase the supply to the population in Brazil.展开更多

In this paper a simulation environment for intrusion detection system in IEC 61850 standard-based substation automation system is provided to test simulated attacks on IEDs (intelligent electronic devices). Intrusion detection is the process of detecting malicious attacker, so it is an effective and mature security mechanism to protect electrical facility. However, it is not harnessed when securing IEC 61850 automated substation. To prove the detection capability of the system testing environment was developed to analyze and test attacks simulated with different test cases. It shows that the simulation environment works accordingly to various network traffic scenarios and eventually proves the functionality of intrusion detection system to be later deployed in the real IEC 61850 based substation automation system site.展开更多

In the MFW method, a large number of bobbins are used. Carbon fibers are arranged equiangularly above a mandrel, and they are wound and stacked on the mandrel simultaneously. Furthermore, CFRP pipes with non-crimp structure were made by MFW, and the torsional tests were performed in order to investigate mechanical properties comparing with braided CFRP pipes. These results made clear that the non-crimp structure by MFW was capable to improve torsional properties. The MFW machine produce non-crimp tubular preform with carbon fiber automatically. It is expected to produce non-crimp preforms for automotive parts which required high productivity.展开更多

Lack of up-to-date information on efficient operation and maintenance of EPDS (electric power distribution systems), Nigeria is addressed by designing and implementing an indigenous real-time monitoring and diagnosi...Lack of up-to-date information on efficient operation and maintenance of EPDS (electric power distribution systems), Nigeria is addressed by designing and implementing an indigenous real-time monitoring and diagnosis system. The system encompasses the development of software driven hardware positioned at the remotely located sub-stations at the low voltage level to keep track of the network in real-time. The detection of faults exploits threshold passing algorithm through continuous monitoring of the network power quality. Communication between the RTU (remote terminal unit) and the DCC (distribution control center) which is based on GSM is initiated by disturbance. The DCC performs fault evaluation processing using the received data and predetermined faults signatures to determine the nature of disturbance and presents the result in graphic user interface environment. A fault reporting time of 2 s was achieved. The developed system exhibits a high degree of accuracy and manifests no spurious reports during testing. The resultant system limits the effects of interruption and increases power availability by reducing the down time. The system strengthens engineering and management capabilities required to enhance reliability by providing information about the network health status.展开更多

The DCC performs fault evaluation processing using the received data and predetermined faults signatures to determine the nature of disturbance and presents the result in graphic user interface environment. A fault reporting time of 2 s was achieved. The developed system exhibits a high degree of accuracy and manifests no spurious reports during testing. The resultant system limits the effects of interruption and increases power availability by reducing the down time. The system strengthens engineering and management capabilities required to enhance reliability by providing information about the network health status.
