Several proxies have been used either individually or in combinati...Although time-averaged shear wave velocity to the depth of 30 m(Vs30) is an important indicator of earthquake site effects, it is difficult to obtain. Several proxies have been used either individually or in combination to infer Vs30 values during seismic hazard estimation under limited observational conditions. Sichuan Province is an area highly prone to earthquakes. Complex geological structures and lack of drilling sites mean that it is particularly important to establish a suitable approach for the estimation of Vs30 values for site classification. This study compared the application of three proxy-based approaches—geology-based, topographic slope-based, and terrain-based—to the estimation of Vs30 values in Sichuan Province. The results revealed that the residual between the measured logVs30 values and the estimations derived from the terrain-based approach was smallest, indicating best predictability. Stability analysis of the three approaches also showed that the terrain-based approach performed best. However, its performance in the plain area was poor,that is, the Vs30 values were mostly underestimated. This might indicate that the old strata, hard rock, and alluvial deposits formed by Quaternary glacier sediments were not identified appropriately in the plain area, highlighting the need for localized corrections.展开更多

Nevertheless, many accidents still occur on residential roads. Area-wide traffic calming measures including Zone 30, which discourages traffic by setting a speed limit of 30 km/h in residential areas, have been implemented. However, no objective implementation method has been established. Development of a model for traffic accident density estimation explained by GIS data can enable the determination of dangerous areas objectively and easily, indicating where area-wide traffic calming can be implemented preferentially. This study examined the relations between traffic accidents and city characteristics, such as population, road factors, and spatial factors. A model was developed to estimate traffic accident density. Kernel density estimation (KDE) techniques were used to assess the relations efficiently. Besides, 16 models were developed by combining accident locations, accident types, and data types. By using them, the applicability of traffic accident density estimation models was examined. Results obtained using Spearman rank correlation show high coefficients between the predicted number and the actual number. The model can indicate the relative accident risk in cities. Results of this study can be used for objective determination of areas where area-wide traffic calming can be implemented preferentially, even if sufficient traffic accident data are not available.展开更多

Rainfall erosivity,one of the factors in the Universal Soil Loss Equation.quantifies the effect of rainfall and runoffon soil erosion.High-resolution data are required to compute rainfall erosivity,but are not widely ...Rainfall erosivity,one of the factors in the Universal Soil Loss Equation.quantifies the effect of rainfall and runoffon soil erosion.High-resolution data are required to compute rainfall erosivity,but are not widely available in many parts of the world.As the temporal resolution of rainfall measurement decreases,computed rainfall erosivity decreases.The objective of the paper is to derive a series of conversion factors as a function of the time interval to compute rainfall erosivity so that the R factor computed using data at different time intervals could be converted to that computed using 1-min data.Rainfall data at 1-min intervals from 62 stations over China were collected to first compute the~ue'R factor values.Underestimation of the R factor was systematically evaluated using data aggregated at 5,6.10,15,20,30,and 60-min to develop conversion factors for the R factor and the 1-in-10-year storm EI30 values.Compared with true values,the relative error in R factor using data at fixed intervals of≤10min was<10%for at least 44 out of 62 stations.Errors increased rapidly when the time interval of the rainfall data exceeded 15 min.Relative errors were>10%using 15-min data for 66.1%of stations and>20%using 30-min data for 61.3%of stations.The conversion factors for the R factor,ranging from 1.051 to 1.871 for 5 to 60-min data,are higher than those for the 1-in-10-years storm EI30,ranging from 1.034 to 1.489 for the 62stations.展开更多
