Impacts of artificial dams on terrestrial water storage changes and the Earth's elastic load response during 1950-2016: A case study of medium and large reservoirs in Chinese mainland

The construction of dams for intercepting and storing water has altered surface water distributions, landsea water exchanges, and the load response of the solid Earth. The lack of accurate estimation of reservoir properties through the land surface and hydrological models can lead to water storage simulation and extraction errors. This impact is particularly evident in many artificial reservoirs in China. The study aims to comprehensively assess the spatiotemporal distribution and trends of water storage in medium and large reservoirs(MLRs) in Chinese mainland during 1950-2016, and to investigate the gravity,displacement, and strain effects induced by the reservoir mass concentration using the load elasticity theory. In addition, the impoundment contributions of MLRs to the relative sea level changes were assessed using a sea-level equation. The results show impoundment increases in the MLRs during1950-2016, particularly in the Yangtze River(Changjiang) and southern basins, causing significant elastic load effects in the surrounding areas of the reservoirs and increasing the relative sea level in China's offshore. However, long-term groundwater estimation trends are overestimated and underestimated in the Yangtze River and southwestern basins, respectively, due to the neglect of the MLRs impacts or the uncertainty of the hydrological model's output(e.g., soil moisture, etc.). The construction of MLRs may reduce the water mass input from land to the ocean, thus slowing global sea level rise. The results of the impact of human activities on the regional water cycle provide important references and data support for improving the integration of hydrological models, evaluating Earth's viscoelastic responses under longterm reservoir storage, enhancing in-situ and satellite geodetic measurements, and identifying the main factors driving sea level changes. 展开更多

The Dnieper River headwaters are in Russia’s Valdai Hills and the river flows south to the Black Sea. The Dnieper River provides a waterway in which to transport goods to and from various European nations. In addition, the dams on the river provide hydro power. There are approximately 2260 km of Dnieper waterways in Russia, in Belarus, and within Ukraine. The Dnieper River has numerous urban centers including Smolensk in Russia, Mogilev in Belarus and Kiev and Zaporizhzhya in Ukraine. The worst nuclear accident in history unfolded, in the Dnieper River watershed, in northern Ukraine as a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded and burned. After an accident, such as Chernobyl, radionuclide contaminated bodies of water via direct deposition from the air, discharge as effluent or indirectly from catchment basin washout. When radionuclides contaminate large bodies of water, they are quickly dispersing and accumulate in water bottom sediments, benthos, aquatic plants, and bottom feeding fish. The main pathways to humans are through contamination of drinking-water, from use of water for irrigation of food crops, and consumption of contaminated fish. Kakhovka Dam on the Dnieper River was destroyed during the Russian-Ukraine conflict and the dam needs to rebuild as soon as possible. Perhaps lessons learned by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), after using TNT to blow up the Birds Point front line levee on the Mississippi River in May of 2011, can be applied to the man-induced 2023 Kakhovka Dam breach. The Birds Point man-induced levee breaches and subsequent flooding of farmland resulted in the loss of the 2011 crops and damaged the future soil productivity. The strong current and sweep of the water through the three man-induced levee breaches on the New Madrid floodway levee created deep gullies, displaced tons of soil, and damaged irrigation equipment, farms, and homes. The New Madrid floodway agricultural lands were restored, and the environmental damages were mitigated. The Kakhovka Dam destruction caused widespread flooding which affected settlements and farmland across the Dnieper watershed. The presence and breach-induced redistribution of Chernobyl-derived nuclides is an additional condition not present at the New Madrid man-induced levee breach. Four canal networks have become disconnected from the feeder reservoir. The canals were the source of drinking water for 700,000 people living in southern Ukraine. The Kakhovka canals also provided irrigation for vast areas of farmland. The water loss from the canals adversely affected food production in the region. The primary objectives of this paper are to assess lessons learned by the USACE and apply them in Ukraine to help restore and manage the Dnieper lifeline and watershed. 展开更多

The possible changes in matters fluxes from the river downstream after the completion of Three Gorges Dam and their potential impacts on the ecosystem of the East China Sea are discussed . The estuarine and coastal waters in the East China Sea were heavily fertilized by the inflow of nutrient-rich freshwater from the Changjiang River, which has led to severe eutrophication and frequent harmful algal blooms ,thus worsening the ecosystem health in this area. Analy- sis showed that the nutrient loadings are very likely to be reduced in the lower Changjiang River due to the construction of Three Gorges Dam. Especially for the total phosphorus, the discharges to the East China Sea will be reduced by one-third, which would relieve the severe eutrophication in this area. However, the expected decrease in the riverine silicate discharge would lead the ratio of silicon to nitrogen to be much less than 1 in the estuarine and coastal waters and thus may cause an elevation of flagellate growth. The changes in the annual water discharges and their seasonal distributions below the dam will be minor. Reduction of suspended particulate matter loading, due to the sedimentation behind the dam, will reduce the nutrient loadings of the particulate form especially for phosphorus, and decrease the turbidity of estuarine and coastal waters. On the other hand, this may enhance the erosion of the delta and the coasts as well as modifythe benthic ecosystem. 展开更多

Coastal seas,located between continents and the open ocean,are an important active carbon pool.The sedimentary total organic carbon(TOC)in these areas is a mixture of terrestrial and marine sources,and can be a powerful proxy for tracing natural processes and human activities.In this study,one fine-grained sediment core(DH5-1) from the inner shelf of the East China Sea was systematically analyzed for TOC and black carbon(BC) contents and TOC stable carbon isotope ratios(d13 C).By combining these data with 210~Pb dating,an improved carbon correction model and a two end-member mixing model,we reconstructed century-scale high-resolution sequences of corrected TOC,terrestrial TOC and marine TOC contents and identified two carbon depletion events in the DH5-1 record.The two events,shown as two minima in the TOC profiles,correspond temporally to 1985-1987 AD and 2003-2006 AD,which exactly matches the water impoundment of the Gezhouba Dam and Three Gorges Dam,respectively.In addition,the variations in TOC contents and δ^(13)C values before,during or after the minima demonstrate a relationship between the depletion events and water impoundment of the dams on the Changjiang River.The TOC reductions may represent synchronous responses of sedimentary TOC and resultant ecological ef fects on the inner shelf of the East China Sea to the water impoundment of the dams.These new TOC records reflect the interaction between natural and anthropogenic processes and,accordingly,provide a deep insight and important references for assessing marine ecological ef fects resulting from water impoundment of largescale dams. 展开更多

High resolution(0.5 c... The well-known Three Gorges Dam(TGD) within the Yangtze catchment launched its operation in 2003. The effect of the TGD operation on the sediment size on the East China Sea shelf is rarely known. High resolution(0.5 cm sampling) grain size analysis and 137 Cs and 210 Pb dating of the DH8-1 core were conducted with core collected from the distal part of a main sink for the modern Yangtze sediment entering the sea, the Min-Zhe Coastal Mud Deposits(MZCMD) on the inner East China Sea shelf. The 137 Cs dating results show that the core DH8-1 formed during 1946–2012 with a mean deposition rate of 0.65 cm yr^(-1), indicating that the 0.5 cm sampling for grain size analysis in this local area could reflect environmental changes generally on a one-year time scale. The mean grain size of DH8-1 core sediment that deposited after 2003 is significantly larger than that deposited during 1988–2002. After ruling out other possible factors, we infer that the sediment coarsening of DH8-1 core after 2003 is attributed to the TGD operation which causes the erosion of the Yangtze subaqueous delta. Specifically, the TGD operation significantly intensifies the declining trend of the Yangtze sediment loads to the sea despite no decreased water discharge, which results in extensive erosion of the Yangtze subaqueous delta. The relatively coarse sediment of the subaqueous delta is eroded and resuspended by ocean dynamics and then transported by coastal current, finally depositing on the MZCMD area. In addition, the general sediment fining of core DH8-1 that deposited during 1988–2002, comparing with 1946–1987, is mainly caused by dam construction and soil and water conservation within the Yangtze catchment. Our findings are helpful for better understanding the effects of such a huge dam as the TGD on a sediment sink like the MZCMD of such a large river as the Yangtze River. 展开更多

There are many papers on red tide occurrences and eutrophication. Here, we use these data to examine the relationship between dam construction and red tide occurrence in Kesennuma Bay, Dokai Bay and the small bays of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Here, for the first time, differences in mechanisms of red tide occurrences in these small bays are demonstrated. Mud overflowing from dams likely induces red tides in these areas as the mud flows out from the mouth of the rivers, is carried along the coast by the longshore current, and then enters and is deposited into small bays. Red tide is considered to be induced by the accumulation of mud and siltation. From data on the locations and year of red tide occurrences in the Gulf of Mexico, the same mechanism as for the occurrence of red tide in small bays of Japanwas found to be applicable. 展开更多

A fine resolution model has been applied to get more insight into the effects of a modified runoff due to the Three-Gorges-Dam (TGD) on the East China Sea (ECS).The region of interest was confined to the offshore area in the vicinity of the Changjiang River.To the east,it extended up to the area southwest of Cheju Island.The model was used to evaluate the effect of a modified runoff on the water properties of the adjacent regions like the Changjiang diluted water (CDW) and the Zhoushan Fishing Ground.The sensitivity of the ECS to a modified Changjiang runoff was explored firstly by sensitivity studies and secondly by experiments based on historical runoff records and water management plans of the TGD.These experiments led to the general conclusion that the most affected area by runoff is located close to the Changjiang River mouth.The area of influence has an extension of about 150 km×150 km.In the realistic experiment,the related anomalies reached their maximum value in early summer (May).In normal years the related salinity anomalies can get to as large as 2. 展开更多

Measurements ofpH, total alkalinity (TA), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and air-sea CO2 flux (FCO2) were conducted for the inner continental shelf of the East China Sea (ECS) during August 2011. Variations in pCO2 distribution and FCO2 magnitude during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) (2003-2009), and the potential effects of the TGD on the air-sea CO2 exchange were examined. Results showed that the ECS acts as an overall CO2 sink during summer, with pCO2 ranging from 107 to 585 p.atm and an average FCO2 of -6.39 mmol/(m2·d). Low pCO2 (〈350 μatm) levels were observed at the central shelf (28°-32°N, 123°-125.5°E) where most CO2-absorption occurred. HighpCO2 (〉420 μatm) levels were found in the Changjiang estuary and Hangzhou Bay which acted as the main CO2 source. A negative relationship between pCO2 and salinity (R2=0.722 0) in the estuary zone indicated the predominant effect of the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) on the seawater CO2 system, whereas a positive relationship (R2=0.744 8) in the offshore zone revealed the influence of the Taiwan Current Warm Water (TCWW). Together with the historical data, our results indicated that the CO2 sink has shown a shift southwest while FC02 exhibited dramatic fluctuation during the construction of the TGD, which is located in the middle reaches of the Changjiang. These variations probably reflect fluctuation in the Changjiang runoff, nutrient import, phytoplankton productivity, and sediment input, which are likely to have been caused by the operations of the TGD. Nevertheless, the potential influence of the TGD on the CO2 flux in the ECS is worthy of further study. 展开更多

在人类活动和快速气候变化的影响下,南海周边河流入海沉积物通量发生巨大变化。本文基于2001-2020年间南海周边河流数据及海表悬浮沉积物浓度数据,探究南海周边河流入海沉积物通量的时空变化特征。研究结果表明:2001-2020年南海周边河... 在人类活动和快速气候变化的影响下,南海周边河流入海沉积物通量发生巨大变化。本文基于2001-2020年间南海周边河流数据及海表悬浮沉积物浓度数据,探究南海周边河流入海沉积物通量的时空变化特征。研究结果表明:2001-2020年南海周边河流入海沉积物通量超过345 Mt/a,人类活动导致珠江、红河、湄公河入海沉积物通量减少约300 Mt/a。南海周边河流入海沉积物通量还受台风和气候变化的影响:台风是影响南海周边河流入海沉积物通量的重要因素,尤其是台风期间台湾地区的高屏溪入海沉积物通量可达全年总量的89%。在东亚季风系统影响下,南海周边河流入海沉积物通量表现出雨季高、旱季低的变化特征,雨季期间入海沉积物通量占全年总量的80%以上,相应地,河流表层羽流在雨季具有浓度高和扩散范围大的典型特征。受厄尔尼诺-南方涛动的影响,南海周边河流流量和入海沉积物通量也存在不同周期变化,南海周边大型河流入海沉积物通量表现出2.5~3.0 a的变化周期,并与NI?O3.4指数存在相关性。本文利用20年的河流数据系统论证了台风、气候变化和大坝建设对21世纪以来南海周边河流入海沉积物通量的影响,在源汇过程研究及流域治理方面具有重要意义。 展开更多

海水入侵对于沿海地下淡水资源的不利影响,极大地制约了沿海地区的社会经济发展。在沿海非承压含水层中修建地下坝,是防止海水入侵并保障沿海地下水资源安全的常用措施。在实际工程中,沿海含水层往往都是异质性的,特别是分层非均质性分... 海水入侵对于沿海地下淡水资源的不利影响,极大地制约了沿海地区的社会经济发展。在沿海非承压含水层中修建地下坝,是防止海水入侵并保障沿海地下水资源安全的常用措施。在实际工程中,沿海含水层往往都是异质性的,特别是分层非均质性分布广泛。为深入探究沿海含水层的分层非均质性(含水层中间存在一个高渗透性夹层)对地下坝上游残余盐水清除过程的影响,基于SEAWAT-2000程序构建野外尺度下的二维海水入侵数值模型。利用该模型分析了针对不同地下坝高度、地下坝位置及高渗透性夹层厚度等多种情景下的残余盐水运移的变化规律。模拟结果表明,地下坝的合理布置可显著降低海水入侵范围与程度,相对于均质含水层,中间高渗透性夹层的存在将增大海水入侵的距离并降低盐水楔的高度。地下坝高度大于大坝所在处的盐水楔高度时,才能有效防止海水入侵并清除坝后残余盐水。残余盐水的清除时间将随着地下坝高度的增大而增加;同时,地下坝的布置位置与海洋边界的距离越近,清除坝后残余盐水所需的时间就越长。高渗透夹层的存在极大地改变了残余盐水的脱盐时间,与均质含水层相比,含有中间粗夹层的含水层的残余盐水清除时间将延长。研究还发现,随着中间粗夹层厚度的增大,残余盐水的清除时间将先增大后减小,但其影响相对于地下坝高度与位置而言较小。 展开更多

A long sea dike of 30 km has been constructed in the mid-west area of Korea. This paper describes the construction of tidal dikes focusing on the final closure operation performed in April, 2006 employing intermediate technology.
