The critical time span of the climatic atmosphere and ocean, which is related to the spatial resolution required, the strength of nonlinear action, and the calculation exactness, may represent the relative temporal scale of predictability. As far as the same characteristic spatial scale is concerned, the minimum critical time span of the ocean is about 9 times of that of atmosphere, several days or more. Usually, the stronger the nonlinear action, the shorter the critical time span with smooth changes of external forces. The approximate structure of nonlinear action of climatic atmosphere and ocean is: the nonlinear action decreases usually with increasing latitude, which is related to the role of the Coriolis force in fluid motion (forming geostrophic current); the nonlinear action changes with the anomalous cyclonic or anticyclonic circulation shear, for instance, when the strength of anomalous eastward zonal circulation is comparable to that of anomalous meridional circulation, the nonlinear action is the strongest; wind stress plus gradient forces enhance the nonlinear action, etc.展开更多

First of all, a concept of critical dwell time is given for switched linear systems without control inputs, and the critical dwell time is taken as an arbitrary given positive constant for a switched linear control systems with controllable switching models. Secondly, when a switched linear system has many stabilizable switching models, the problem of stabilization of the overall system is considered. An on-line feedback control is designed such that the overall system is asymptotically stabilizable under switching laws which depend only on those of uncontrollable subsystems of the switching models. Finally, when a switched system is partially controllable (While some switching models are probably unstabilizable), an on-line feedback control and a cyclic switching strategy are designed such that the overall system is asymptotically stabilizable if all switching models of this uncontrollable subsystems are asymptotically stable. In addition, algorithms for designing switching laws and controls are presented.展开更多

Druce seedlings grown for 70 d in the artificial- tidal tanks' simulated semidiurnal tide under greenhouse is studied. Sand and soil act as the substrate and artificial seawater with salinity of 15 is used in cultivation. Shorter waterlogging time(inundated for about 2 ~ 4 h) promotes the growth of K. candel seedlings, while longer time(inundated more than 8 h) or no waterlogging(0 h) inhibits their growth. The number and length of aerating roots increase with the increase of waterlogging time. Under existing conditions, the optimal waterlogging time for the growth of K. candel seedlings is about 2 ~ 4 h in every tide cycle. Compared with other treatments, the 2 h sanded treatments obtain the highest biomass of seedlings, have the lowest mass loss of hypocotyl and broaden the photosynthetic area by increasing the area per leaf after 70-d cultivation. And the soil treatments have the similar tendency. However, waterlogging for 8 h in every tide cycle is critical for normal development of seedlings.K. candel seedlings are highly tolerant to waterlogging and a proper waterlogging is beneficial to the growth of K. candel seedlings.展开更多

By exploiting the property of the Jacobian matrix and the structure of the boundary of the DA, it is found the DA of the state-reduction model and that of the full model of a power system are topological isomorphism. There are one-to-one correspondence relationships between the number of equilibrium points, the type of equilibrium points, and solutions of the two system models. Based on these findings, an expanding interior algorithm is proposed with SOS programming to estimate the DA of the state-reduction model. State trajectories of the full model can be transformed to those of the state-reduction model by orthogonal or equiradius projection. In this way, CCT of a grid fault is estimated with the DA of the state-reduction model. The calculational burden of SOS programming in the DA estimation using the state-reduction model is rather small compared with using the full model. Simulation results show the proposed expanding interior algorithm is able to provide a tight estimation of DA of power systems with higher accuracy and lower time costs.展开更多

The seismic-tomographic images of columnar structures of several hundreds kilometers in diameter have been reported by several researchers, while the much cherished mushroom-shaped plume heads could only be found in computational geodynamics (CGD) models and simple small-scale laboratory analogue simulations. Our theory of transient instability shows that the formation of convection plumes is preceded by the onset of convection caused by unsteady-state heat conduction at the boundaries, from which filamentous plumes first appear. The plumes generated at the Core Mantle Boundary (CMB) and lithosphere rising and falling through the mantle have been pre- dicted simply with our theory for various heat fluxes and viscosities, which still remain uncertain amongst geoscientists. The sizes of mushroom plumes in the sub-solidus mantle caused by heat fluxes of 20 and 120 mW/m2 at the CMB are found to be 1842 km and 1173 km with critical times over 825 Myr and 334 Myr respectively. They are comparable to some large continental flood basalt provinces, and they number between 17 and 41. The thickness of the thermal boundary layers at the CMB from which convection plumes evolved are found to be 652 km and 415 km for 20 and 120 mW/m^2 respectively. Top cooling may produce plunging plumes of diameter of 585 km and at least 195 Myr old. The number of cold plumes is estimated to be 569, which has not been observed by seismic tomograpby展开更多

With regard to policy framework for improvement of operational service headway of a transit service and thereby its waiting time, the necessity to have knowledge on its critical value becomes inevitable. The critical value of waiting time for passengers waiting at transit stops is that duration beyond which passengers are found to be no more interested to wait for a that transit service. The paper demonstrates an approach for estimating the critical value of waiting time at urban transit stops with reference to public transport services such as city bus and shared-auto operational in Bhubaneswar, India. The critical value of waiting time is estimated from the point on cumulative distribution curve of waiting time frequency distribution, at which the maximum rate of change of the slope of curve occurs. The work assumes two positively skewed distributions such as gamma and log-normal for observed distributional pattern of waiting time. The work identifies that gamma distribution is comparatively fitting the observed data better than log-normal distribution. The study reveals that the critical value of waiting time for city bus passengers is about twice than that of shared auto passengers.Though, the study presents new information on critical values of waiting time with reference to an urban area of a developing country, it also demonstrates an experience on application of probability distribution functions for understanding distributional pattern of waiting time.展开更多

With the need to further interface DG (distributed generation) including WG (wind generation) to weak networks, it is necessary to establish a means of determining what is the most efficient quantity of WG that can be applied in order to maintain stability in the network. This paper establishes a concept that can be applied to weak networks. The aim is to estimate how much WG can be installed on weak networks as well as establishing characteristic responses to generation loss without and with faulted conditions. The main contribution is a thorough understanding of weak network limitation proved to be the most critical parameter in these calculations.展开更多

However, the application of these renewable generating stations to weak network has been examined in very limited occasions. Weak networks have a range of limitations from system capacities to CFCT restrictions which would need to be well understood prior to wind energy integration. Of particular interest would be how much wind generation could be integrated into a weak network prior to increasing voltage and frequency stability issues brought about by penetration issues. This paper introduces a simple and practical approach based on the equal area criteria to investigate the stability of weak networks. Simulation results that are presented to show the proposed approach is a viable preliminary assessment tool to determine system stability on weak networks with wind power penetration.展开更多

The use of a stable power station (with high speed machines) will be critical in achieving fast and reliable transient response to network events, in particular, when large transient loads are expected on a continuous basis, i.e., industrial mining and mineral processing equipment. Simulation results of this paper assist in understanding how small power stations and wind generation equipment respond to large transients in an islanded network. In particular, detailed simulations and analyses will be presented on impacts of distributed wind generation units (1.5 MW DF1G) on the stability of a small weak network. The novelty of this paper is on detailed analyses and simulation of weak networks with interconnects DFIG's including their impacts on system stability under various transient operating conditions.展开更多

文摘Waiting time at transit stops is found to be an influential policy variable for a passenger’s decision on whether to undertake a given transit service. The study reveals that the critical value of waiting time for city bus passengers is about twice than that of shared auto passengers.Though, the study presents new information on critical values of waiting time with reference to an urban area of a developing country, it also demonstrates an experience on application of probability distribution functions for understanding distributional pattern of waiting time.
文摘Limited resources are available on the application of wind generation systems interconnected to weak powemetworks. The main contribution is a thorough understanding of weak network limitation proved to be the most critical parameter in these calculations.
文摘The performance of DFIG-based wind generation systems that interconnected to solid networks is well understood and prevalent in Europe and North America. Simulation results that are presented to show the proposed approach is a viable preliminary assessment tool to determine system stability on weak networks with wind power penetration.
文摘The utilization of wind generation equipment, such as DFIGs (double fed induction generators), interconnected to islanded power generation and distribution systems is investigated in order to determine their effects on the overall system operating characteristics and stability. The novelty of this paper is on detailed analyses and simulation of weak networks with interconnects DFIG's including their impacts on system stability under various transient operating conditions.
