But in Frankenstein and The Island of Doctor Moreau, Shelly and Wells both delineate some complicated but meaningful monster characters. These monsters’ features and natures represent their creator’s intention and purpose. In both texts, monsters are ugly but benevolent, while their creators are eccentric and monstrous. The relationship between men and monsters allows us to view the definition of humanity from a more critical and objective perspective.展开更多

Their monstrosity is often a distorted mirror image of the hero's humanity. Shakespeare's Caliban is a famous example of the affinity between monster and protagonist. Homer's Polyphemus, the first monster in Western tradition establishes certain traits that persist through later literature: lawless, barbarian, cannibal, and giant. Polyphemus hates men, but loves his old ram. Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon in Beowulf are giants, lawless, cannibals. The dragon Beowulf dies fighting anticipates the identity between hero and monster that Borges makes explicit in Asterion, the Minotaur. Dante's Satan in the Inferno fails to leave later successors. In Borges's "The House of Asterion" the Minotaur is both monster and hero. Asterion's affinities with other protagonists in Borges' stories suggest that the monster in the labyrinth is not the Minotaur, but the concept of infinity.展开更多

Firstly, it examines Dexter's final twist in plot and the decision Dexter makes to finally embrace his "dark passenger" to argue for the necessity of the plot twist to the series, which scholarship has not yet performed. Secondly, by situating Dexter's decision within a framework focused on reproductive futurism, a revised and more nuanced approach to Dexter's ontological dilemma can be proffered. Finally, by locating Dexter's dark passenger within the theoretical frames of reproductive futurism and community this article adds an important dimension to notions of the monster conventionally rooted in theories of identity and subjectivity. In the final moments of the series everything changes for Dexter as his identity is redeemed for a reproductive future without guarantees, which this article argues is germane to considerations ofbiopolitics and community in the contemporary period.展开更多

The monster sawtooth activities belong to global fluctuations and are characterized with a series of large core collapses on SXR intensity traces with a long period, a large amplitude fluctuation and a large inversion radius. However, they emerge without apparent deterioration of plasma confinement and without major plasma disruption. During the events, long partial sawtooth collapses and abundant MHD phenomena are also observed.展开更多

The shrewd and sanguinary Monster who realized these violent murders called himself "Jack the Ripper", signing with his "trade name" the letters he sent to the Central News Agency and through the press he soon became a myth, the most famous "serial killer" of all time. As a matter of fact, his legend survived, and his evil figure still haunts the pages of books and---of course--the frames of many films; among the most famous From Hell (2001) by Albert and Allen Hughes, taken from the graphic novel of the same name by Moore and Campbell; Jack the Ripper (1976) by Jess Franco, with a disturbing Klaus Kinski, but also the TV movie directed by David Wickes in 1998 entitled Jack The Ripper; more obliquely, Jack appears also in The Lodger (1913) and Frenzy (1972) by Alfred Hitchcock. But can these movies be defined as true biopics of Jack? Strangely enough, it seems, these biographies contribute to build the mythic "anonymity" of the Ripper, encouraging (and fascinating) fear and nightmares.展开更多
