Theodore Dreiser,is one of the realistic writers as well as a naturalist. The novel is set in America from the end of the19thcentury to the beginning of the 20thcentury,which was the heyday of industrialization in America.Industrialization exerted great impact on the lives and thought of people, especially on women. The heroine in the novel is right the typical example of that age.To Carrie’s success, different critics have different opinions around the world. The circle of critics constantly condemns the novel both in speech and writing, labeling her as a fallen woman. The novel is interpreted from a different angle, that is a new woman’s self-actualization.Carrie not only pursues material enjoyment, but also pursues career success as a new woman. It is discussed how Carrie gets economic independence and rebuilds herself as a poor country girl. The oppression of capitalism embodied in sister carrier is analyzed. Moreover,it talks about the effect of the oppression of capitalism on Carrie.Secondly,it discusses inescapable effect of patriarchy embodied in Sister Carrie on Carrie and Minnie. Then Carrie’s self-loss is explored.Lastly it explores the process from her dependence on men and family to economic independence. The focus is on Carrier’s selfrebuilding as well as awakening of self-consciousness. 展开更多

The formation of personality comes from people’s choices and pursuit of self-realization,which is influenced by objective factors but not determined by them,so personality does not belong to the domain of objectivity. The concept of general personality rights in the German Constitution was initially premised on the objective determinability in the field of personality, but in constitutional jurisprudence,it gradually shifted to something with individual autonomy as the core and personal self-realization as the goal, and the scope of relevant rights expanded accordingly,so that they could not be clearly distinguished from general freedom of action and thus became the general principle of constitutional rights. The protection of constitutional personality rights in the United States and Japan can also confirm this process, providing evidence for the constitutional nature of personality rights.Deeper research shows that constitutional personality rights actually manifest the highest value of modern constitutions—human dignity. In contrast, the theoretical justification of personality rights in civil law just lies in the objectivity and defensive nature of personality elements. 展开更多

Lady Chatterley’s Lover, one of the most significant novels in English literature, has remained controversial, not only inthe times of its production, but also till now.Readers appear to split up in different sides. The author, the intrepid sex-scene depict-er,D.H.Lawrence,has been under discussion by feminists about his own understanding of feminism. In this essay, details of thenovel have been examined,in order to both defend his viewpoint and contribution to feminism, and point out some defects and im-perfection in his knowledge of feminism. The first chapter deals with Lady Chatterley’s self-salvation through outrageous sex relationship, revealing female’s identity crisisand identity found in this novel;chapter two associates feminism with ecology, which is a methodology frequently applied by Law-rence;the last chapter discusses popular feminist view arguing against Lawrence, and discloses the limitation in his feminism. 展开更多

Doris Lessing’s To Room Nineteen portrays a female character,Susan, who was controlled under the influence of patriarchal society and never gave up pursuing self-realization.The plot’s main clues are continuously finding a new room.In the short story, there are many images related to room or house.Such as a new flat in South Kensington,a house with a big garden in Richmond and Susan’s destination room 19.Through pursuing a personal space,Susan is seeking a sense of safety,a sense of presence and a sense of identity. It is a way of illusory redemption.Based on Elaine Showalter’s feminist criticism and Freud psychoanalysis, this paper focuses on analyzing Susan’s psychological condition and the awakening of female consciousness according to the image of room. 展开更多

This article aims to discuss three of Alice Munro's stories--"Differently," "The Children Stay," and "What Is Remembered"--in terms of Munro's new ways of dealing with female adultery. I argue that unlike their nineteenthcentury literary precedents, these stories promote a positive view of desire, of selfrealization and self-fulfillment. They subtly denounce guilt and shame and instead focus on the adulteress' inner rebellions, struggles, and calculations. Munro's choice of highlights and temporal rearrangement stand out to enchant her readers. I discuss in turn the psychological transformation of the adulteresses facilitated by their doubles, the residual memory beyond real and dishonest remorse, and their urge for self-realization, ending with a summarizing conclusion. 展开更多
