A Survey of Engagement, Subjectivity and Inter-subjectivity

Engagement and subjectivity focus on the non-propositional meaning of discourse, and inter-subjectivity is concerned with the relationship between a writer/speaker and his potential readers/addressees. This article first introduces the definitions of engagement, subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, and then attempts to discuss the relationships among them. The analysis shows that subjectivity and inter-subjectivity are closely related and that the process of engagement is an interaction of speaking subject and his/her potential readers and social behavior of inter-subjectivity and social practice as well.

A Study on the Translator's Subjectivity of Wolf Totem

The translator, as the main body of a translation, has been in an invisible and ignored state for a long time. The position of the translator has been improved and the role of the translator has begun to be recognized since the field of translation studies multifaceted and deepened. In order to analyze the translator's subjectivity better, the thesis states comprehensive definitions of the translator's subjectivity and uses Wolf Totem as a case study, whose author is Jiang Rong and the translator is Howard Goldblatt, to show that how the translator Howard Goldblatt utilizes his subjectivity in the translation process.

On the Limitary Subjectivity of the Translator——from the perspective of an inter-subjective system

Throughout the past years, the important role of translators has always been overlooked. The invisibility was even taken as one of the standards of a good translator. However, great change happens, especially after the"culture turn"in translation study and the role of the translators has been laid emphasis on. This kind of sharp change has led to two extreme thoughts on this issue: scholars choose either total invisibility or complete subjectivity. This paper puts forward an inter-subjective system, in which the subjectivity should be emphasized only with constraints. The other subjects in the inter-subjective system contribute to the restriction of the subjectivity of the translator during the translation process.By writing this paper, the author wishes to present a comprehensive and balanced way of understanding translators' subjectivity. Therefore, no matter analyzing the translation process or evaluating translation products, people will be more objective towards the role of translators.

Hong Lou Meng is one of the four greatest classical novels of China. Since the appearance of the book, more and more people have been interested in it and have begun to study the book from different point of views. Nowdays, there are only two versions of the translation that consists of the whole 120 chapters of the book: one is entitled A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Hsien-yi and his wife Gladys Yang; the one with the title The Story of the Stone is translated by David Hawkes and John Minford.From the view of culture, the book Hong Lou Meng is a great collection of chinese traditional culture, and it reflects the tradition, the religion, the festivals, the tea culture, and the medicine culture and as well as the opera and poem s of chines people. But viewing the translation versions, different people have different translations to the same culture elements. This paper, beginning from this point, makes a first study about the translatiuon subjectivity sense, that leads to this translation differences.

The Exploration of Translator's Subjectivity and Styles——From Four English Versions of Tao Te Ching

Tao Te Ching is chosen as the object of this study due to its everlasting charm and profound thoughts within 5000 characters.The thesis chooses versions translated by Arthur Waley(1889～1966),James Legge(1815～1897),Lin Yutang(1895～1976) and Gu Zheng kun(1951～) as the study cases on the account of their different cultural background and historical context,and also of their respective pur poses and interpretations.The translation products of these four translators are selected to analyze the subjectivity played by each of them and to explore to which extent the style and characteristics of the translators could influence the translation versions.

PRIMARY RESEARCH ON SUBJECTIVITY GEOMETRY

The so-called 'Subjectivity Geometry'' herein is a course for studying the relationship between the abstracted object configuration and its observed record by means of mathematical methods and described by matlieinatical language. There are many features differing from the common geometry when the effects of the subjectivity (such as the position of the observer, the functions of the visual system of human) are taken into account during the observing-recording process. In this paper, some basic assumptions are made; spherieal observing record is suggested: the fundamental relationship between the abstracted object configuration and its corresponding observed record is studied and an example of apiriication of the above theory is presented. We anticipate that the study of subjectivity geometry will influencc, or will be associated with the study of physiology of the visual system, applied optics etc., and will be useful in surveying, pilotage and imitative biology, etc.

SOLUTION OF SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS OF COSINE LAW ARISING FROM SUBJECTIVITY GEOMETRY

This paper discusses the solution of a group of two-order six elements rooted algebraic simultaneous equations set up by cosine law arising from the application example of subjectivity geometry[1]. By means of the implicit function theorem, this paper proves that there exists a unique real solution of those equations. Transforming this problem into an unconstrained nonlinear optimization problem, the solution can be found by known methods. 4 numerical example by descent method is given.
