A Communicative Approach to Spoken English Course Design

Speaking competence is one of the basic skills of language acquisition.The teaching of speaking skill has been attached great importance to in College English education in China.For decades,people have made efforts to improve the classroom teaching effects through various means,one of which is that of communicative approach.This paper attempts to explore the design of a spoken English lesson through a case study in the light of communicative theory,thus providing an alternative to the conventional spoken English course teaching method.

Studies of communicative approach and teaching reform on college English

In pace with the constant increase of exchange with other countries, the traditional teaching approach cannot meet the demand of modem education. But the communicative approach conforms to historical trends, focusing on students and developing their overall language ability to handle changes and solve problems. Proceeding from the tortuous course of teaching reform on English, analyzing theories of foreign language approaches and characteristics of communicative approach and researching into its strategies, the author aims to study how to spur teaching reform on college English towards great success.

Evaluation of Communicative Approach in the College English Listening Course

The traditional ways of teaching in China put emphasis on the development of reading and grammar.So students are famous for their high marks in reading and low marks in listening,and lack of communicative competence.To solve this problem,this study introduces Communicative Approach(CA) to the English listening class.In order to investigate the effects of the CA on students' listening abilities further,a 18-week comparative study on two classes is conducted.The data show that students' listening abilities and attitudes in the CA class is significantly higher and more positive than those in the traditional class,which indicates that CA is an effective approach in improving students' listening abilities compared to the traditional approach.

A study of communicative approach in the perspective of teaching ontology

This paper approaches the Communicative Approach （CA） from ontological perspective by making structural and functional analyses with consideration of influential variables in the communicative language teaching. In terms of entitative dimension, the basic components of the CA are communicative subjects, context and situation, content, and mode. From the functional perspective, the CA helps to improve the learners＇ ability to communicate in the target language, the dual construction of the learners and the target culture, and the mutual development of the teacher and the learners.

This paper reviews the research on communicative teaching in various areas, including the foundations of the approach, the principles, the methodology and some techniques as well as the test in communicative teaching. This paper argues that the essence of communicative approach is that the students are prepared to meet the need of communication in the real world and this approach has a positive effect on students＇ achievements. Accordingly, it is hoped that communicative teaching approach will be more widely used in China.

REFLECTION ON PRACTICE OF COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH IN CLASSROOM ENGLISH TEACHING IN RURAL AREAS

This article reports the results of the investigation on the practice of the Communicative Approach in classroom English teaching in rural areas in Hebei Province. Surprisingly, it turns out that most of the English teachers in rural areas fail to perform the Communicative Approach in their English classes. So this paper intends to present the results of the investigation, analyze the reasons for the failure of implementing the Communicative Approach in classroom English teaching, and discuss the implications of the findings.

A COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH TO TEACHING ADVANCED ENGLISH

Advanced English (Zhang & Wang, 1997) is one of the main Intensive English Reading textbooks used in China for English majors. As it is 'Advanced English', it certainly has brought some difficulties to our teaching. Some teachers feel it hard to teach the book in a communicative approach and so most of the time in class, the teacher talks. Even if there are questions and answers in class, they are often dull and passive, not dynamic. Consequently, the class gets so boring that students think the book impractical and useless.
