Corrosion failure,especially stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue,is the main cause of centrifugal compressor impeller failure.And it is concealed and destructive.This paper summarizes the main theories of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue and its latest developments,and it also points out that existing stress corrosion cracking theories can be reduced to the anodic dissolution(AD),the hydrogen-induced cracking(HIC),and the combined AD and HIC mechanisms.The corrosion behavior and the mechanism of corrosion fatigue in the crack propagation stage are similar to stress corrosion cracking.The effects of stress ratio,loading frequency,and corrosive medium on the corrosion fatigue crack propagation rate are analyzed and summarized.The corrosion behavior and the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue in corrosive environments,which contain sulfide,chlorides,and carbonate,are analyzed.The working environments of the centrifugal compressor impeller show the behavior and the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue in different corrosive environments.The current research methods for centrifugal compressor impeller corrosion failure are analyzed.Physical analysis,numerical simulation,and the fluid-structure interaction method play an increasingly important role in the research on impeller deformation and stress distribution caused by the joint action of aerodynamic load and centrifugal load. 展开更多

Magnesium alloys were considered to be used as biodegradable implants due to their biocompatibility,biodegradability and nontoxicity.However,under the simultaneous action of corrosive environment and mechanical loading in human body,magnesium alloys are easy to be affected by corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking.In this work,the fatigue behavior of the extruded Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy used for vascular stents was studied both in air and in simulated body fluid(SBF).It was revealed that the fatigue limit of as-extruded Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy in air is about 65 MPa at 10^7 cycles,while there is no limit in SBF and shows a linear relationship between the fatigue life and stress amplitudes.The fatigue crack source in air was formed by the inclusions and defects.However,the stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement are the main reasons for the formation of the fatigue initial crack source in SBF. 展开更多

The fatigue crack growth rate (CGR) of ultra high strength steel 30CrMnSiNi2A in distilled water at 18,35 and 55℃ were measured.It was confirmed that the temperature is strongly af- fected on the corrosion fatigue CGR of ultra high strength steel.An expression concerning the effects of Δ K and temperature on the CGR was proposed.The fact that the apparent activation energy (36.6 kJ/mol) resulted from regressive analysis of CGR data was similar to the activation energy of hydrogen diffusion in γ-Fe,strongly supporting the theory of hydrogen-assisted crack growth.The overload retardation effect was greatly reduced in cor- rosion fatigue crack growth,especially at lower frequency,e.g.,0.1 Hz.This phenomenon might be due to the increase of the SCC component of CGR after an overload. 展开更多

With the loading test equipment of corrosion fatigue specially designed, the corrosion fatigue characteristics of high performance concrete (HPC) withstanding the interaction of third point fatigue loading and Na_2SO_4 solution were investigated and analyzed. The experimental results indicate that water-binder ratio evidently influences the corrosion fatigue characteristics of HPC, and a moderate quantitative fine mineral admixture enhances the corrosion fatigue resistance of HPC. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of the LY12CZ aluminum alloy fastener involving a central hole in air or in 3.5wt% NaCl solution was investigated. The experimental results indicated that the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate decreased with the increasing loading frequency,and in a corrosive environment,the crack growth rate was slightly larger than that in air. Based on the experimental results,the virtual corrosion fatigue crack propagation tests were investigated and the stochastic process method and the AFGROW simulation method were presented. The normal process and lognormal process were considered for the stochastic process method based on the numerically fitted Paris equation. The distribution of crack size and the corresponding probabilistic model of crack length distribution for a given number of cycles can be found by integrating the stochastic process over time. Using the AFGROW software,the virtual simulation was carried out to analyze the corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior and the predicted crack growth curve was in good agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

The results showed that DSS was susceptible to pitting corrosion and corrosion fatigue. Both intergranluar corrosion cracking and transgranlular corrosion cracking initiated at the bottom of pitting holes. Furthermore, the corrosion fatigue properties of DSS in 3.5%NaCl solution may be relatived to complex electrochemical and mechanical coupling effects between the three phases (austenite, ferrite and martensite), where martensite and ferrite were anodic in the corrosion cell and could be prone to cracking under certain condition. 展开更多

Offshore platforms are always subjected to wave action which is random variable amplitude cyclic loading. In order to simulate the stressing condition at the 'hot spot' of the tubular joints and the marine environment, random variable amplitude fatigue tests have been carried out on welded plate joints in sea water. The tests have been conducted under the conditions of loading frequency of 0.2 Hz/, stress ratio of -1, seawater temperature of about 20°C and cathodic protection with the potential about -850 mV, SCE. The test results have been compared with the seawater corrosion fatigue life under constant amplitude loading. Miner's linear cumulative damage summation rule has been used to predict the corrosion fatigue life under variable amplitude loading. The predicted life is in good agreement with the test data. 展开更多

Comparative investigations were carried out of the effect of heat treatment regimes Jor steel GC-4(40CrMnSiMoVA)on its crack propagating rates,from corrosion fatigue, (da/dN)_(CF),or stress corrosion cracking,(da/dt)_(SCC),in media with various constituents and pH values.Both(da/dN)_(CF) and(da/dt)_(SCC) accelerate with the increase of yield stress of the steel,yet the former is far less than the later.In comparison with media,the (da/dt)_(SCC) in distilled water is slightly greater than that in 3.5% NaCl solution,and the (da/dN)_(CF) in distilled water is far less than that in 3.5% NaCl solution.With the pH value increasing in 3.5% NaCl solution,the(da/dN)_(CF) lowers down and the(da/dt)_(SCC) speeds up.An explanation was also proposed with concept of the cyclic hardening and softening at crack tip,as well as the crack closure and occluded cell effect. 展开更多

Copper single crystal specimens with the longitudinal axis parallel to the [013] double-slip-orientation were grown through Bridgman technique. The fatigue tests were performed using a symmetric tension-compression load mode at room temperature in an open-air and a 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution, respectively. The dislocation microstructures were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) by the electron channeling contrast (ECC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the saturation dislocation microstructures during the corrosion fatigue in the aqueous solution of 0.5 mol/L NaCI, mainly consisted of labyrinth, wall and vein dislocation structures, which differs from the dislocation structures of the walls and veins in an open-air environment. 展开更多

In the case of high R, however, crack growth acceleration at high △K regions appears to be cantrolled by the stress-assisted dissolution. The crack opening stress inlensity factor K_(op) detected by the back-face-strain method is the result of crack surface in contact with the corrosion products and therefore an overestimated value of K_(op) at the crack tip is given. 展开更多

The results show that elastic strain has little contribution to material dissolution. The elastic tension strain results in the decrease in the transient current, while the elastic compression strain increases the transient current. Compared to the elastic deformation, plastic deformation affects material dissolution evidently For iron in 3.5%NaCl solution, the strain amplitude plays a dominant role in the dissolution process accelerated by the plastic strain, while in 3.5%NaCl+1%NaNO2 solution, both the strain amplitude and strain rate play an important role in this process. In this paper, the effect of the elastic deformation on the material dissolution and the relation between the tension and compression current peak values under the plastic cycle deformation are discussed 展开更多

Through investigating and comparing the fatigue behavior of an as-rolled Mg–3.08Zn–0.83Al(in wt.%)alloy performing surface phosphate conversion film treatment,it revealed that the determined fatigue strength of surface treated samples at 106 cycles in air was 65 MPa,whereas the fatigue strength was only 35 MPa when tested in 3.5 wt.%NaCl solution.Failure analysis demonstrated that in air,the fatigue crack initiation was mainly dominated by the interaction between the retarding effect of phosphate conversion film on cyclic slips occurring in the underneath substrate.When the matrix cannot endure the accumulated stress concentration due to the irreversibility of cyclic slips,the fatigue crack will preferentially initiate at sample subsurface.Since the phosphate conversion film cracked easily under the cyclic loading and lost its protectiveness on the substrate in 3.5 wt.%NaCl solution,fatigue cracks were preferentially nucleated at the localized corrosion pits. 展开更多

Due to the excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance, high biocompatibility and nickel- free character, the high nitrogen nickel-free austenitic stainless steel (HNASS) becomes an ideally alternative material for coronary stents. Stent implantation works in harsh blood environment after a balloon dilatation, i.e., the material is used in a corrosive environment with a permanent deforma- tion. The present study attempts to investigate effects of pre-straining on high-cycle fatigue behavior and corrosion fatigue behavior of HNASS in Hank's solution and the relevant mechanism for coronary stents application. It is found that higher pre-straining on HNASS results in higher strength and maintains almost same corrosion resistance. Fatigue limit of 0% HNASS is 550 MPa, while corrosion fatigue limit is 475 MPa. And improvement in fatigue limit of 20% and 35% pre-strained HNASS is in comparison with the 0% HNASS, while corrosion would undermine the fatigue behavior of HNASS. In a suitable range, the pre- straining had a beneficial effect on corrosion fatigue strength of HNASS, such as nearly 300 MPa improved with 20% cold deformation. This result provides a good reference for predicting the life of HNASS stent and as well its design. 展开更多

Magnesium alloys are promising as load bearing components.They are inevitably exposed to cyclic loading and corrosive environment in actual service,which can consequently result in corrosion fatigue failure and loss of mechanical integrity of the material.Therefore,in the present study,the corrosion behavior,corrosion fatigue performance and mechanical integrity of an extruded Mg4Zn0.2Sn(wt.%)alloy were thoroughly studied in two corrosive electrolytes.Strong localized corrosion occurred when the alloy was immersed in deionized water based sodium chloride(NaCl)solution.The poor corrosion resistance of the alloy resulted in a fast deterioration of the tensile properties after pre-exposure to salt spray and a poor fatigue resistance in deionized water based NaCl solution.In comparison,the active dissolution of the substrate was sufficiently suppressed in artificial tap water based NaCl solution due to the formation of highly protective corrosion product layers.This consequently conferred longer fatigue life on the alloy in the electrolyte.Our results emphasized the influence of corrosion on the fatigue behavior and tensile properties of magnesium alloys. 展开更多

The 304 stainless steel (SS) microcantilever specimens with dimensions of 30 #m ×30 #m ×50 #m (thicknessx width × length) were fabricated by femtosecond (fs) laser. The microsized cantilevers of good quality with structure and dimensions according commendably with that of the designed cantilever were obtained. The result shows that fs laser micromachining is a promising method for directly fabricating metallic microcomponents. Corrosion and fatigue properties of microsized specimens were carried out on the microsized 304 SS cantilever beams by a newly developed fatigue testing machine. The results show that the microsized 304 SS specimens appear to have an improved resistance towards localized corrosion compared to ordinary-sized 304 SS specimens after the static corrosion testing. The testing result shows that the presence of corrosive solution reduces the fatigue lifetime of the 304 SS specimen by a factor of 10-100. The maximum bending loads measured by fatigue testing machine decrease rapidly at the terminal stage of environment assisted fatigue testing. Corrosion fracture first occurred at the range of notch with a higher tensile bending stress, and exhibited clear evidence of trans-columnar fracture detected by SEM (scanning electron microscopy). 展开更多
