Environmental Design in the Context of Chinese Regional Culture

Environmental design plays a critical role in shaping human habitats.In the context of increasing homogenization of environmental aesthetics,the pervasive influence of the information age,and challenges in industry growth,the question arises:where does environmental design stand?This article delves into the development of the environmental design industry in view of China’s diverse regional cultural contexts.It analyzes the concepts and interconnections between China’s regional cultures and environmental design,identifies current issues,and proposes strategies for integrating China’s regional cultures into environmental design practices.This exploration provides valuable insights into the evolution of environmental design within the framework of China’s distinct regional cultural characteristics in the contemporary era.

Historical Changes,Contemporary Characteristics,and Five Transformations of Environmental Design in China

Starting from the characteristics of modernization in three different historical stages since the founding of the People’s Republic of China,this paper analyses the internal changes in the professional name,subordinate disciplines and categories,and professional mission of the environmental design profession,and summarizes the changes in the characteristics of the environmental design profession in 10 aspects such as subordinate disciplines,design objects,design types,cultural characteristics,and aesthetic values on the basis of the results of the analysis,and explores five transformations of the environmental design profession in the process of China’s development in the future.The five transformations in the future development of China are to serve the harmony and beauty of the three major urban and rural spaces with“small and micro-renewal and reconstruction”;to serve the transmission of Chinese culture and the spread of Chinese civilization with“spatial heritage and innovation”;to serve the balance and sufficiency of the four functions of urban and rural settlements with“friendliness and equilibrium”;to serve the intelligence,wisdom,and enjoyment of indoor and outdoor living environment space with“scientific and technological achievements”;and to serve the co-construction,co-management,and sharing of indoor and outdoor public space in urban and rural areas with“public participation.”

Practice and Exploration of Ideological and Political Teaching in Landscape Design Courses for Environmental Design Majors

To implement the fundamental goal of moral education,based on the teaching practice of landscape design courses,we explore how to integrate value shaping,knowledge transfer,and skill cultivation in the teaching links of landscape design courses in environmental design majors,such as selecting design topics,assigning tasks,researching projects,designing works,designing explanations,and defense.

Integrated Project Library Exploration in Landscape Design Teaching for Environmental Design Majors

To enhance our talent cultivation model through“school-enterprise cooperation and industry-teaching fusion”,we aim to improve the“4321”Industry-Education Integration System.This includes actively promoting the use of case banks and project banks in teaching to develop students’practical engineering skills through hands-on application of professional knowledge.Additionally,landscape design courses emphasize practical learning experiences to implement the fundamental goal of“cultivating morality”.Guided by enhancing students’practical skills,we ensure alignment with course objectives and professional training requirements,emphasizing the seamless integration of theory and practice.

Exploration of Practice Teaching Reform Based on Outcome-Based Education Concept:Taking Environmental Design Major as an Example

The concept of OBE(outcome-based education)is more focused on designing and implementing teaching activities around expected learning outcomes than the traditional teaching model and enhancing the quality of education through clear and measurable learning outcomes,which has led to profound changes in the field of education.However,environmental design practice teaching faces a series of challenges in the implementation of the OBE concept,including the complexity of the assessment system,personalized learning and creative learning,and over-reliance on quantitative assessment.Therefore,in order to further deepen the professionalization of the OBE concept,we have conducted research on the design education practice models at home and abroad,explored the practice teaching models and their applications such as project system,studio model,practical internships,and technology-driven interdisciplinary integration,and took the practice innovative teaching models of Stanford d.school and Rhode Island School of Design(RISD)as examples to explore the characteristics of the curricula,cultivation modes,and the development of the environmental design professional practice teaching model.The characteristics of OBE and RISD are discussed to provide a global vision and local contextual reference for the practice teaching reform of environmental design majors.

Uncertainty analysis for the calculation of marine environmental design parameters in the South China Sea

The calculation results of marine environmental design parameters obtained from different data sampling methods,model distributions,and parameter estimation methods often vary greatly.To better analyze the uncertainties in the calculation of marine environmental design parameters,a general model uncertainty assessment method is necessary.We proposed a new multivariate model uncertainty assessment method for the calculation of marine environmental design parameters.The method divides the overall model uncertainty into two categories:aleatory uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty.The aleatory uncertainty of the model is obtained by analyzing the influence of the number and the dispersion degree of samples on the information entropy of the model.The epistemic uncertainty of the model is calculated using the information entropy of the model itself and the prediction error.The advantages of this method are that it does not require many-year-observation data for the marine environmental elements,and the method can be used to analyze any specific factors that cause model uncertainty.Results show that by applying the method to the South China Sea,the aleatory uncertainty of the model increases with the number of samples and then stabilizes.A positive correlation was revealed between the dispersion of the samples and the aleatory uncertainty of the model.Both the distribution of the model and the parameter estimation results of the model have significant effects on the epistemic uncertainty of the model.When the goodness-of-fit of the model is relatively close,the best model can be selected according to the criterion of the lowest overall uncertainty of the models,which can both ensure a better model fit and avoid too much uncertainty in the model calculation results.The presented multivariate model uncertainty assessment method provides a criterion to measure the advantages and disadvantages of the marine environmental design parameter calculation model from the aspect of uncertainty,which is of great significance to analyze the uncertainties in the calculation of marine environmental design parameters and improve the accuracy of the calculation results.

In response to the national strategy of“vigorously cultivating interdisciplinary talents and actively promoting interdisciplinary integration,”this article focuses on the nationally recognized Environmental Design program at Hezhou University’s College of Design,leveraging local industry advantages to engage in interdisciplinary integration through educational practices.Using the“Construction of the Panoramic Virtual Nature Museum of the Guizhou Crocodile Lizard at Mount Dagui”as a case study,we aim to establish a professional and interdisciplinary learning community,incorporate student-centered interactive teaching methods,boost student motivation,enhance teaching quality,nurture forward-thinking versatile innovative talents,and provide a guideline for interdisciplinary educational reform.

The Path and Value of Integrating Ecological Aesthetic Education into the Teaching of Environmental Art Design Major

CONSTRUCTION OF INTEGRATED CAD TOOLS ENVIRONMENT TO SUPPORT CONCURRENT COLLABORATIVE DESIGN

A CAD tools environment is described to support concurrent collaborative design. The environment has four components: shared design representation, design process control, CAD tools, designer interface. Some related issues for the construction, such as form feature handling, constraint satisfaction, design process control, STEP based information integration, are discussed in more detail.

A human－ecology approach to environmental design──An integrative human－ecology design derived from Chinese agricultural cultur eexperiences

Based on fundamental principles of ecology ,the ecological philosophy connotation of Feng-Shui(Wind and Water) concept from experiences of Chinese agricultural culture was first discussed , and then hu-man-ecological implications of Feng-Shui environment architecture is analyzed. As a theoretical integrationbetween human ecology and Feng-Shui theory ,“environment” and “environmental design” concepts were re-examined and given new definitions. With holistic principles of human ecological design in the context ofFeng-Shui , essential technical ways of integrative human ecological design were explored in the presentationof a case study of an urban environmental design in east China.

Livable Environment Design in Superfluous Things

Superfluous Things, written by scholar Wen Zhenheng in the Ming Dynasty, is regarded as the encyclopedia on Chinese ancient landscape architecture and environmental design. It analyzed Chinese traditional garden systematically and comprehensively. This study emphasizes the contemporary value of the principles and methods in Superfluous Things. According to the book, 2 key environmental building principles that can be applied into modern landscape design have been put forward:(1) artificiality should fit with natural conditions;(2) less without reduction. Based on these, a coupling point on the practice and research of building a sustainable and friendly environment has been found, which combines natural resources, human needs, economic benefits and cultural factors.

Evaluation of Large-Scale Housing Projects in Terms of Their Compatibility to Criteria of Environmental Design

The design and execution of large-scale housing projects always have negative environmental impacts in terms of excessive consumption of non-renewable energy resources and environmental pollution. These negative impacts are multiplied in the case of large-scale housing projects where a large number of standardized units are implemented in a repeated manner. This proposed paper will study and evaluate the environmental impacts of large-scale housing projects according to criteria of environmental design. The case study project is Haram City that is a housing project for small low-income families. The project consists of 50,000 housing units and is located in 6th of October City, which has a hot dry desert climate that necessitates special design considerations and applications of environmental design concepts. The project will be analyzed and evaluated in terms of site layout, design of buildings, orientation, materials used, construction techniques, thermal behavior, landscaping, etc.

Optimum Environmental Load Design Criterion for Marine Structures Based on Investment and Benefit Analysis

Marine structures operating in natural ocean environment are subjected to various stochastic loads. For design of the marine structures, the most important task is to determine environmental load design criterion. This paper presents a method to determine the optimum environmental load design criterion for marine structures. This method is based on the investment and benefit analysis and it can reach the design purpose of decreasing total costs during the service life of the structures and increasing economic benefits.
