The aim of this work is to optimise biofuel formulation from a mixture design by studying physical properties, such as specific gravity and kinematic viscosity of various formulated mixtures. Optimization from the mixture plan revealed that in the chosen experimental domain, the optimal conditions are: 40% for used frying oil (UFO), 50% for bioethanol and 10% for diesel. These experimental conditions lead to a biofuel with a density of 0.84 and a kinematic viscosity of 2.97 cSt. These parameters are compliant with the diesel quality certificate in tropical areas. These density and viscosity values were determined according to respective desirability values of 0.68 and 0.75.展开更多

However, the separation of wide-boiling binary mixtures leads to substantial temperature differences between the top and bottom of the column. This limits the applicability of conventional VRHP due to high capital costs and strict performance requirements of the compressor. To overcome these challenges and to accommodate compressor operating conditions, a novel synthesis and design method is introduced to integrate VRHPs with wide-boiling binary mixture distillation columns(WBMDCs). This method enables quick determination of an initial configuration for the integrated WBMDC-VRHP system and helps identify the optimum configuration with the minimum total annual cost. Two examples, namely the separation of benzene/toluene and isopropanol/chlorobenzene, are employed to derive optimum configurations of the WBMDC-VRHP and compare them with the WBMDC. A systematic comparison between the WBMDC-VRHP and WBMDC demonstrates the superior steady-state performance and economic efficiency of the WBMDC-VRHP.展开更多

Based on stone-to-stone skeleton structure concept, processes of LSPM gradation design was given. The gradation composite design for LSPM shows that the LSPM nominal maximum size ( N MS) should be larger than 26.5 mm, and the NMS sieve passing percentage should be greater than 50%. Through experiments and calculations on the volume properties of the aggregate, the range of aggregate gradation curve of LSPM was given. In terms of asphalt binder's normalized test results, MAC-70 and SBS modified asphalt were selected as the asphalt binders. The applicability of large scale Marshall Method and gyratory compaction method to shape specimens was investigated. Based on the asphalt mixture performance evaluation, the optimum asphalt content range (3.1%-3.6%), the bitumen film's thickness range (13-16 μm) and the air void range (13%-18 %) were recommended. Finally, LSPM was tested by the laboratory performance tests including rutting resistance test, fatigue test and water stability test. The theoretic and practical analysis shows that LSPM has a good performance on water permeability, rutting resistance and reflection crack resistance.展开更多

A new process was proposed to separate them by extractive distillation, with the advantages of low equipment investment, energy consumption and liquid load in the columns. One principle to improve the extractive distillation process was put forward. Moreover, the analysis of operation state of the new process was done. There were eight operation states found for the whole process, but only one operation state was desirable. This work provides a way to effectively separate C4 mixtures and helps the reasonable utilization of C4 resource.展开更多

Despite this growth, initial predictions for a potential product purification process for these complex mixtures remains entirely experimentally based. The present work represents an initial study to demonstrate the benefits of a systematic approach. For process development of chemically well-studied systems model based process design methods are already available. Therefore the proposed approach focuses on a method for the efficient characterization of the physical properties of the key components. Once this is adequately defined, unit operations and their potential to separate the feed components can be modeled. The current state of research is discussed. Based on this evaluation the most efficient method for conceptual process development has been identified and further developed. The resulting methodology consists of model-based cost accounting accompanied by experimental model-parameter determination. The latter is carried out at in miniaturized laboratory-scale measurement cells for each unit operation using the complete original feed. The model-based modelparameter determination from these experiments is accompanied by a comprehensive error analysis. The experimental plan currently includes the determination of thermodynamic equilibrium conditions in the mixture directly from the raw material mixture. Transport kinetics and fluid dynamic parameters are first estimated from known correlations or preexisting knowledge. Later on these parameters are determined exactly in mini-plant experiments. Furthermore, biological and botanical-based guidelines are developed to identify thermodynamically favored basic operations. Finally, the developed approaches are successfully validated using two plant extracts. Firstly, it could be proven that the botanical pre-selection can reduce the experimental plan significantly. Secondly, it was shown that the experimental equilibrium data of the kinetics and fluid dynamics can have a significant impact on the separation costs. Therefore, detailed rigorous modeling approaches have to be chosen instead of short-cut methods in order to make any valid process development conclusions or to further optimize the system.展开更多

The column study was carried out using enzyme modified corn starch and the breakthrough curve parameters were used to design the packed bed column. The effect of flow rate on the breakthrough curves revealed that adsorption efficiency decreased with increased inflow rate. The empty bed contact time (τ) of the pilot plant packed column was 35.35 min while the breakthrough time is 40.78 min. 66.7% was the fraction of capacity left unused for the pilot plant from the design.展开更多
