Presentation of empirical equations for estimating engineering properties of soils is a simple, low cost and widely-used method. One of the major concerns in using these equations is evaluating their accuracy in different conditions and regions which often lead to doubts about obtained results. Most of these equations were derived in special laboratories, different climate conditions and in soils with different geotechnical and geological engineering properties and were generalized to other conditions. The main question is that whether these methods are also applicable to other conditions. Using local equations and narrowing the usage range of various methods based on each region’s properties are appropriate methods to solve these problems. This leads to simplified and faster analysis and high reliability in the obtained results. In this paper, empirical equations were derived to estimate internal friction angle, based on SPT numbers of Mashhad City’s soils in Iran, using SPT and direct shear tests results from 50 samples (25 GW and 25 GC soil samples). The results showed similar values for predicted?φ?values by SPT test and?φ?values determined by direct shear tests. 展开更多

The relationships between the microstructure, the composition, the friction temperature and the form of a new kind of friction material which is a glass fibre resin friction materials (GFRF) are studied through a series of tests on machine as EPMA, STM, DTG-DTA,an optical microscope and a friction test machine. The tests show that the rising rate in temperature and the heat conductivity of GFRF are lower than that of asbestos friction material. In GFRF, the heat-decline is slowed down or even eliminated. the distribution of heat- stress is improved and the life span is extended. Raising the temperature of resin resolution and enhancing the stickness between resin and glass fibre are the two important procedures to improve the friction and wear performance of GFRF.A discription about the friction and wear mechanism of GFRF is given in this paper. 展开更多

The friction judder characteristics during clutch engagement have a significant influence on the NVH of a driveline. In this research, the judder characteristics of automobile clutch friction materials and experimental verification are studied.First, considering the stick-slip phenomenon in the clutch engagement process,a detailed 9-degrees-of-freedom(DOF)model including the body, each cylinder of the engine, clutch and friction lining, torsional damper, transmission and other driveline parts is established, and the calculation formula of friction torque in the clutch engagement process is determined.Second, the influence of the friction gradient characteristics on the amplification or attenuation of the automobile friction judder is analyzed, and the corresponding stability analysis and the numerical simulation of different friction gradient values are carried out with MATLAB/Simulink software. Finally, judder bench test equipment and a corresponding damping test program are developed, and the relationship between the friction coefficient gradient characteristics and the system damping is analyzed. After a large number of tests, the evaluation basis of the test is determined. The research results show that the friction lining with negative gradient characteristics of the friction coefficient will have a judder signal. When the friction gradient value is less than-0.005 s/m,the judder signal of the measured clutch cannot be completely attenuated, and the judder phenomenon occurs. When the friction gradient is greater than-0.005 s/m,the judder signal can be significantly suppressed and the system connection tends to be stable. 展开更多

Friction measurements were also conducted using a modified tribotester based on strip sliding between tools. Four different tool surfaces were tested under similar contact conditions regarding contact area, normal pressure, sliding speed, lubricant and surface characteristics to calculate the friction coefficient between the tool surface and a high strength low alloy steel sheet HSLA 380. The results showed that friction coefficient varies over a wide range with different lubricating conditions and different sliding velocities. For some sliding velocities, the coefficient of friction is stable and low, while for others it is unstable and higher. Results of the experiments reveal that this novel tribotester is a very useful tool to evaluate and compare the friction between steel sheet and tool surfaces in alloyed steel for cold working applications. The outcomes have only small dispersion within the different test series, which indicates a stable process with good repeatability. The test method enables comparison of different surface finishes and treatments, lubricants and coatings in terms of friction and galling under conditions similar to those found in sheet metal forming processes. The four different types of surfaces considered for this study were grinded, polished, nitrided and quenched/tempered. The main difference among the tested tools in this work was the surface roughness, which was found to have a strong influence on friction. 展开更多

The mix design method of asphalt rubber open-graded friction course (AR-OGFC) by the Marshall test and key technologies of AR-OGFC overlay are studied. Based on the draindown test, the stripping test and the Marshall test by different beating times, the asphalt content estimating method and Marshall beat criterion are studied. It is found that the asphalt content of AR-OGFC can be estimated by the formula of Arizona, and the proper Marshall test criterion for AR-OGFC is 50 beats on both sides. By analyzing the influence of gradation on OGFC performance, the gradation of AR-OGFC is recommended, and the amount of aggregate passing 4. 75 mm should be minimized for AR-OGFC. Through investigation of AR-OGFC overlay projects, key technologies such as the treatment of underlying pavement and the selection of tack coat are advanced, and modified emulsified asphalt should be used in AR-OGFC overlay tack coat. 展开更多

The methodology of predicting pile shaft skin ultimate friction has been studied in a systematic way. In the light of that, the analysis of the pile shaft resistance for bored and cast in situ piles in cohesive soils was carried out thoroughly in the basis of field performance data of 10 fully instrumented large diameter bored piles (LDBPs) used as the bridge foundation. The undrained strength index μ in term of cohesive soils was brought forward in allusion to the cohesive soils in the consistence plastic state, and can effectively combine the friction angle and the cohesion of cohesive soils in undrained condition. And that the classical ' α method' was modified much in effect to predict the pile shaft skin friction of LDBPs in cohesive soils. Furthermore, the approach of standard penetration test (SPT) N value used to estimate the pile shaft skin ultimate friction was analyzed, and the calculating formulae were established for LDBPs in clay and silt clay respectively. 展开更多

It is pointed out that the friction and lubrication conditions in for drawing are different from that in mechanical motion or machine work or other plastic process. The common test methods in laboratories are analyzed. It shows that though all those test methods can test the friction coefficient, the probe test method is most suitable for the research of friction and lubrication and the process in deep drawing, for this method is identical with the actual work condition either from the test principle or deformation status of the blank. The hot deformation behavior of AA6063 aluminium alloy has been investigated by means of compression tests at temperatures between 400 and 520℃, and strain rates ranging from 2.5 to 10 s^-1. Owing to the barreling, the theoretical model on the basis of Hills general method is used to calculate the flow stress of a cylindrical specimen under uniaxial simple compression so as to consider the friction effect at the die-specimen interface. A method of evaluating the friction coefficient by combining compression tests with the finite element method is presented. The real flow behavior of AA6063 aluminium alloy can be described with sinh-Arrhenius equation. The hot deformation activation energy Q derived from the corrected stress and strain data is 232. 350 kJ/mol. 展开更多

This paper reviews 19 apparatuses having highvelocity capabilities, describes a rotary-shear low to highvelocity friction apparatus installed at Institute of Geology,China Earthquake Administration, and reports results from velocity-jump tests on Pingxi fault gouge to illustrate technical problems in conducting velocity-stepping tests at high velocities. The apparatus is capable of producing plate to seismic velocities(44 mm/a to 2.1 m/s for specimens of 40 mm in diameter),using a 22 kW servomotor with a gear/belt system having three velocity ranges.A speed range can be changed by 103 or 106by using five electromagnetic clutches without stopping the motor. Two cam clutches allow fivefold velocity steps, and the motor speed can be increased from zero to 1,500 rpm in 0.1-0.2 s by changing the controlling voltage.A unique feature of the apparatus is a large specimen chamber where different specimen assemblies can be installed easily. In addition to a standard specimen assembly for friction experiments, two pressure vessels were made for pore pressures to 70 MPa;one at room temperature and the other at temperatures to 500 °C.Velocity step tests are needed to see if the framework of rate-and-state friction is applicable or not at high velocities. We report results from velocity jump tests from 1.4 mm/s to 1.4 m/s on yellowish gouge from a Pingxi fault zone, located at the northeastern part of the Longmenshan fault system that caused the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. An instantaneous increase in friction followed by dramatic slip weakening was observed for the yellowish gouge with smooth sliding surfaces of host rock, but no instantaneous response was recognized for the same gouge with roughened sliding surfaces.Instantaneous and transient frictional properties upon velocity steps cannot be separated easily at high velocities, and technical improvements for velocity step tests are suggested. 展开更多

The present work aims to enhance the ballistic resistance of AA7005 alloy by incorporating the TiB2 and B4C ceramic reinforcement particles. Surface composites with different weight fractions of TiB2 and B4C particles were processed by friction stir processing. Micro-hardness and depth of penetration tests were carried out to evaluate the ballistic properties of the surface composites. The surface hardness of the composite was found to be nearly 70 HV higher than base alloy. The depth of penetration of the steel projectile was 20e26mm in the composites as compared to 37mm in the base alloy. Ballistic mass efficiency factor of the surface composite was found to be 1.6 times higher than base alloy. This is mainly attributed to the dispersion strengthening from the reinforcement particles. 展开更多

Based on the ABAQUS/Explicit finite element method, the forming force changing trend of deep drawing test for 6A16 aluminum alloy plate after pre-aging and storage at room temperature for one month was simulated under friction coefficient ranging from 0 to 0.22.The lubricants selected for the tests were mechanical oil, butter and dry film lubricant, and the friction coefficient of these lubricants were 0.05,0.10 and 0.15,respectively.Microstructural evolution of 6 A16 aluminum alloy plate during drawing forming was investigated by OM,SEM and EBSD.The results showed that, with the increase of friction coefficient, the stress, strain and deformation degree in deformation zone increased, while the grain size in deformation zone decreased. Thus, the hardness of the cup-typed component increased with the increase of friction coefficient.Butter-lubricated cups had the highest tensile strength and yield strength after paint-bake cycle. The combination of simulation results and microstructure analysis of 6A16 aluminum alloy plate after drawing forming indicates that the appropriate lubricant is butter. 展开更多

However, it is very prone to corrosion attack in chloride containing media. In the present investigation, AA2024 aluminium alloy rolled plates of 5 mm in thickness were friction stir welded. Corrosion performances of the specimens were evaluated by conducting salt fog tests in Na Cl solution at different p H values, chloride ion concentrations and spraying time. In addition, an empirical relationship was established to predict the corrosion rate of friction stir welds of AA2024 aluminium alloy. A central composite rotatable design including three factors and five levels was used to minimize the number of experiments. Response surface methodology(RSM) was used to develop the relationship. The corrosion rate decreased under neutral p H conditions. The corrosion rate increased in acidic and basic conditions. It was also found that the corrosion rate decreased with the increase of spraying time, but the corrosion tended to be uniform with the increment of time and with the increase in the chloride ion concentration, and the corrosion rate increased in the salt spray corrosion test. 展开更多

The general contact problem of a disc squeezed between jaws of arbitrary curvature is considered employing Muskhelishvili’s complex potentials.Taking advantage of the general solution introduced, the closed-form expressions for the stresses along strategic loci(loaded rim, loaded diameter, disc’s center)are obtained,in terms of the ratio r of the disc’s to the jaw’s curvature. Then, the effect of r(as well as that of the relative stiffness of the disc’s and jaw’s materials dictating the contact arc)on the stress distribution along these loci is explored. It is concluded that, for both smooth contact(zero friction)and contact with friction, the role of the jaw’s curvature is significant not only along the disc-jaw contact arc(as it could be expected),but also all along the loaded diameter. On the other hand,it is indicated that the stress field at the disc’s center is more or less insensitive to the jaw’s curvature assuming that r lies within the range(0,0.67)or in other words within the limits defined by the two standardized suggestions,i.e.that of American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM)(plane loading platens with r ? 0)and that of International Society for Rock Mechanics(ISRM)(curved jaws with r ? 0.67).The upper limit of this range is a kind of compromise between the need to make the stress field at the disc’s center independent of the boundary conditions while keeping at the same time the contact angle large enough to reduce the stress concentration and the risk for premature fracture initiation far from the disc’s center. For jaws with radius of curvature exceeded by that suggested by ISRM,the stress field at the disc’s center is significantly influenced.Especially for jaws with radius approaching that of the disc, the stress field at the disc’s center is dramatically distorted rendering Hondros’ formula inapplicable and the test results erroneous. 展开更多

Friction Stir Welding(FSW)is the most promising solid-state metals joining method introduced in this era.Compared to the conventional fusion welding methods, this FSW can produce joints with higher mechanical and metallurgi-cal properties.Formerly,FSW was adopted for low melting metals like aluminum alloys. In recent years it has made significant progress in friction stir welding of steels since unfavourable phase transformations occurred in welds due to the melting of the parent and filler metals in fusion welding can be eliminated. The main advantage of FSW over traditional fusion welding is the reduction in the heat-affected zone(HAZ),and the joints exhibit excellent mechanical and corrosion resistance properties. This article reviews the progress in the relevant issues such as the FSW tool mate-rials and tool profiles for joining steels, microstructure and mechanical properties of steels joints, special problems in joining dissimilar steels.Moreover,in-situ heating sources was used to overcome the main limitations in FSW of hard metals and their alloys,i.e.,tool damages and insufficient heat generation.Different in-situ heating sources like laser, induction heat, gas tungsten arc welding assisted FSW for various types of steels are introduced in this review. On the basis of the up-to-date status, some problems that need further investigation are put forward. 展开更多

In order to improve the computation efficiency and simulation accuracy,a novel simplified simulation method for friction pendulum bearing( FPB) is proposed. The behavior of FPB was analyzed based on the stress characteristics of the slider of FPB. Then,a novel simplified FPB model with a single pendulum and a nonlinear spring was established. The mechanical behavior of the simplified model was analyzed and it conformed well to the basic requirements of FPB. Furthermore, shaking table tests of a concrete slab block structure isolated by four FPBs were carried out, followed by finite element simulations of the test using the proposed simplified model.Three waves and eleven loading scenarios were selected in the test. The results show that the overall trend of the relative displacement time-history curves, the horizontal acceleration time-history curves and the vertical acceleration time-history curves from the numerical simulation match in a good manner with those obtained from the tests. Specifically,it is found that the difference of the peak value within these curves between the simulation and test results is less than 15%,which means that the proposed simplified model can be used to simulate the FPB behaviors under dynamic loadings with acceptable accuracy for engineering purposes. 展开更多

A probe test method was employed to detect the friction condition of the interfaces between tools and blank. At the same time a self-developed measurement apparatus to realize the probe test method was also presented. Based on the analysis of force, a correlative friction model was also given. With the self-developed measurement apparatus, the effects of three kinds of lubricating oils which were in common use during the process of sheet steel drawing were studied. By probing the friction coefficient values of different lubricating oils during the drawing process of the hot-galvanized sheet steel (steel brand: ST07Zn), we can see that the friction caused by PK oil was the lowest, so the effect of PK oil was the best. Then PK oil was used as the base lubricating oil and some solid additive powers was added into it to make a new type lubrication (named as L oil). The result of test proved that the new lubricating oil had remarkable effect on the drawing process of hot-galvanized sheet steel. 展开更多

This paper presents the results from unidirectional shaking table tests of two reduced scale steel models of a building frame, with one and two floors, respectively. These frames incorporate friction dissipators at every floor. The inputs are sine-dwells and artificial and registered earthquakes. This study is part of a larger research project aiming to assess the seismic efficiency of friction dissipators by means of an integrated numerical and experimental approach. Inside this framework, the main objectives of these experiments are to: (i) collect a wide range of results to calibrate a numerical model derived within the project, (ii) clarify some of the most controversial issues about friction dissipators (including behavior for inputs containing pulses, capacity to reduce resonance peaks, introduction of high frequencies in the response, and self- generated eccentricities), (iii) better understand their dynamic behavior, (iv) provide insight on the feasibility and reliability of using simple friction dissipators for seismic protection of building structures and (v) characterize the hysteretic behavior of these devices. Most of these objectives are satisfactorily reached and relevant conclusions are stated. 展开更多
