METHODS: Sixty male Wistar rats were randomized to six groups. The control group (n = 10) had an end- to-end ileal anastomosis without RIPC. The preconditioned groups (n = 34) varied in time of ischemia and time of reperfusion. One group received the amino acid L-arginine before constructing the anastomosis (n = 9). On postoperative day 4, the rats were re-laparotomized, and bursting pressure, hydroxyproline concentration, intra-abdominal adhesions, and a histological score concerning the mucosat ischemic injury were collected. The data are given as median (range).RESULTS: On postoperative day 4, median bursting pressure was 124 mmHg (60-146 mmHg) in the control group. The experimental groups did not show a statistically significant difference (P 〉 0.05). Regarding the hydroxyproline concentration, we did not find any significant variation in the experimental groups. We detected significantly less mucosal injury in the RIPC groups. Furthermore, we assessed more extensive intra-abdominal adhesions in the preconditioned groups than in the control group. CONCLUSION: RIPC directly before performing small bowel anastomosis does not affect anastomotic stability in the early period, as seen in ischemic preconditioning.展开更多

However, how tree seedling survival and growth respond to low-temperature events and the influencing mechanisms remain unclear. To clarify how low-temperature event limits the survival and growth of tree seedlings in the montane regions of eastern Liaoning Province, northeast China, we investigated temperature and light intensity within secondary forest gaps, and the survival and growth of Juglans mandshurica seedlings after a low-temperature event in the spring of 2014. Damage to seedlings due to low temperature sig- nificantly varied in different aspects. Seedlings in gaps on southeast-facing slopes were the most seriously damaged, followed by those in gaps on northeast-facing slopes. In contrast, seedlings in west-facing gaps and in control plots without slope aspect were not damaged. The freezing injury index for seedlings was negatively correlated with minimum temperature (r = - 0.608, P 〈 0.01), but it was positively correlated with light intensity (r= 0.818, P 〈 0.01). In addition, height and root collar diameter of damaged seedlings were significantly lower than those of the undamaged seedlings (P 〈 0.01) during the early growing season (April-July), but no significant difference were observed during the late growing season (July-Oc- tober) (P 〉 0.05). The extent of seedling damage was directly related to slope aspect. Low temperature and high light intensity were found to be the dominant factors affecting extent of damage to seedlings on southeast- and northeast-facing slopes.展开更多

In this study, we examined the effects of penehyclidine hydrochloride (PHC), a selective M-receptor inhibitor, on dichlorvos-induced acute lung injury in swine. Methods Twenty-two female swines were randomly divided into control (n=5), dichlorvos (n=6), atropine (n=6), and PHC (n=5) groups. Hemodynamic data, extravascular lung water index (EVLWI), and pulmonary vascular permeability index (PVPI) were monitored; blood gas analysis and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) levels were measured. PaO2/FiO2, cardiac index (CI), and pulmonary vascular resistance indices (PVRI) were calculated. At termination of the study, pulmonary tissue was collected for ATPase activity determination and wet to dry weight ratio (W/D) testing 6 hours post-poisoning. TUNEL assay, and Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 expression were applied to pulmonary tissue, and histopathology was observed. Results After poisoning, PHC markedly decreased PVRI, increased CI more effectively than atropine. Anticholinergic treatment reduced W/D, apoptosis index (AI), and mitigated injury to the structure of lung; however, PHC reduced AI and caspase-3 expression and improved Bcl-2/Bax more effectively than atropine. Atropine and PHC improved ATPase activities; a significant difference between groups was observed in Ca2+-ATPase activity, but not Na+-K+-ATPase activity. Conclusions The PHC group showed mild impairment in pathology, less apoptotic cells, and little impact on cardiac function compared with the atropine group in dichlorvos-induced acute lung injury.展开更多

Methods: The data of 1 297 Chinese trauma patients were studied for trauma scoring with the Revised Trauma Score Injury Severity Score TRISS (RTS ISS TRISS) system to get a serial of new weight coefficients through analyzing a multivariation logical regression between the outcome and the injury severity. Results: ISS was higher but the Age Score and probability of survival (Ps) of the death group were lower than those of the survival group. New values of RTS ISS Age coefficients differed from the Major Trauma Outcome Study (MTOS) ones, through which the constant b 0 decreased its negative value, and ISS weight b 2 increased its negative value, but RTS weight b 1 and age weight b 3 changed with the trauma types. MTOSs values and new values of weight coefficients were used on 1 297 patients for prognosis by calculating Ps. The accuracy of new values ( 90.13 %) was a little higher than that of MTOSs (89.5%), with a promotion in specialization but a loss in sensitivity. Conclusions: A revision of TRISSs weight coefficients is either necessary or feasible. To achieve this purpose, a Chinese trauma database with large capacity is recommended.展开更多
